Goldberg's auctions-- Big Numismatic Thrill

It's been a while... Yes, it has been a while since I felt the higher energy level from coin collecting. Lately it's been lower dollar coins ( around or under $100) or empty searches for the higher grade sets I'm trying to build.... Last night was quite different ! Not only did I get home from work and find out that my internet bids had been enough to land me 2 additions to my Walker collection--- I also sat down and enjoyed the live bidding since I was registered. BROKEN "VOWS" & CHEAP 70 YEAR OLD COINS!

Very nice looking coins for "next to nothing" prices. Greetings Collectors, Even though I said my "buying days" were over, it's hard to pass on coins that are being "given away".I was browsing one of my "favorite sellers" and saw a couple coins that were very nice looking and also dirt cheap. The total price paid for this MS-66 1941-P Lincoln and also a 1941 MS-66 Washington quarter totaled less than the fees it would cost to grade both. Since seeing the two '1941's together, I thought what

Missing Title?

Hey, I'm collecting the holder not the coin!!! My latest "America The Beautiful" Release Ceremony Coin from Yosemite doesn't contain the above quoted words. I know that somehow the mint has copy written the phrase containing the additional word "Quarters". I'm just disappointed in this development. It's just another reason I'm losing interest in 'graded' coin collecting. Joe To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

What Changed in Three Months?

Another nice coin slipped away. Back in June, B&M had a really nice 1850 cent, NGC graded MS67BN, in their auction at the Baltimore show. I saw it at lot viewing and marked my catalog simply, "go", meaning go for it. It was really pretty. Before the auction, I had already spent some money on a half dollar, and didn't think I ought to spend as much more as the cent would cost. So a nice upgrade opportunity was missed. In the auction, that coin did not sell, having a reserve of $1800. After

Eye spikes....Vam 38 response to answered question :)

response to answers... Thank you guys (Mark W, and cpm9ball) for responding to my question. And thanks for suggesting VamWorld as a site for me to view. I have done just that and found it very informative. Always a pleasure to hear from numismatists with more knowledge and experience than me. -Rhon To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Eye spikes in 1878-p Vam 38 7/5

Eye spikes in eye I've just recently purchased an 1878-p Vam 38 7/5 strong, and my coin has 2 eye spikes at the top of the eye, just below the eye lid. I've never read of this being there before. Is anyone else aware of these spikes being present? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Didn't take my own advice

Do yourself a favor Ok, this morning I'm kicking myself for NOT following my own advice and because of it I had to do extra work. Last week I won a "lot" (one Kennedy) at one of the on-line auction houses. I had been "tracking" this coin for a week in advance. They had the photo's of the coin both obverse and reverse. So the day of the auction arrives and I submitted the winning bid. I waited all week for my new Kennedy to arrive as I was sure to be proud to add it to my collection. Well

The Ikes are Complete

After a year of looking I finally got a reasonably priced 73S Silver Ike to complete the set I completed my first set of coins EVER! This week I was able to pick up a Proof 1973S Silver Eisenhower Dollar to fill the last hole in my set. After a year of looking for the coin that wasn?t grossly over priced, I got it! (And yes, I cracked it out of its proof case and immediately put it in my set.) It was the last coin I needed to complete the set and I mean a complete set! My set has all three 19

POINTS and COUNTERPOINT

What's the Point Again ? Oh yes he or she with the MOST points....wins ! I really HATE to complain . Before I do I MUST still take a second to thank NGC for the venue and the Registry Set site which I appreciate and fully enjoy That being said I too have found some very perplexing point questions as I have assembled my very modest sets . Washington Quarter Proofs 1950-1964 for instance . Most proof coins that are NOT Cameo or Ultra Cameos or SB varieties simply get the same number of points

MY "NICEST" COIN WITH THE LEAST POINTS!

If God weren't so darn busy he'd kick someones tail for only assigning 45 points to this gorgeous coin!!! Greetings Collectors, Just a short post about the Franklin I mentioned in my previous post. I have owned this coin for eons. I bought it back when the PCGS holders looked like this, just to give you an idea of how long it's been in my family of coins. I have done an enormous amount of research on Franklin proof coinage. So much that I feel as if I have a "PHD" in it. A while back I did a

Improperly Cleaned... Blindsided

Improperly Cleaned or Improperly Graded Some of my most beautiful coins are Improperly Cleaned (problem coins). If you look at my (JTO) 1792-1964 type set and view the pictures of the 1793 wreath large cent and the Capped Bust Half Dollar I think you will see what I mean. I think, in some respects we, as collectors, have lost our way. The grading services have hijacked our hobby. Numismatics is a form of art albeit within historical contexts. With the registry system "collectors" seem to

POINTS

WHO IS GOD Who is God? I just became aware of the downgrade of the point evaluation of the Liberty Walking Halves. Just who in hell is in charge of this type of overhall. We have Roosevelt dimes rated at about 10 times the point value of Jefferson's and on and on. Doesn't the membership have anything to say about this? I lost over 4 thousand of your precious points for this "correction" and no one consulted me. Who is God? respectively, but not happy, GILMORE To see old comments for t

Blindsided by Improperly Cleaned!

Borrowing from a term in W.K.F?s recent post, there is no better way to describe learning that your coins have been ?improperly cleaned? than ?blindsided?. Greetings all, have you ever gotten your hopes up about a submission, only to discover your coin is ?not-gradable, improperly cleaned?? I?m sure that for many of you, myself included, this has happened on multiple occasions. I wish there were some way to take the risk out of submissions, but alas, there is none. A "VERY" RARE "MODERN" COIN IN HIGH GRADES

The U.S. Mint gets back into the "Commemorative" business... Greetings Collectors, I have had quite a bit of extra time on my hands lately and holding off buying anything, has enabled me to start to build up my rainy day fund for future gold & silver purchases. Having said that, I'm not sure if the correction I predicted in the metals shortly after the Nov. 2nd elections will be any less than the price is of late. Gold and silver have just "blown through" past records and both are up big

Re: Blindsided

You're not the only one You're not the only one "blindsided". I logged in to find that my Walker set had dropped almost 5,000 points. The only mitigating factor is that the sets above and below had also dropped a similar amount so my "Top 10" rankings are still there. Speaking of glaring points discrepancies, look at the difference between Jefferson nickels and Roosevelt dimes. Take the 1947 issues as an example: - 1947-S Jefferson in MS-67: there are only 11 at this grade, none higher

BLINDSIDED BY A DAYLIGHT ROBBERY!

My collection is safe, it's just the "dam" points... Greetings Collectors, Well, this may be a blessing, after all. TPETERS and I have been kinda running neck and neck for some time. He would pull ahead and then after some major purchases I would reciprocate. I had been hovering at the 200,000 point mark for some time. I have sold a few coins and then I would add a few. Then came my "self imposed" moratorium on any future coin purchases unless monies were freed up by sales. In other words, m

Nearly Completed Presidential Set

Mr. Jefferson, where are you? This weekend I made a sizable dent in my goal to complete, to date, my PF-69 set of Presidential Dollars. I added 2008, 2009 and 2010 and only need our 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson, from 2007 to complete my set to date. Very happy about getting this close to my first complete NGC set. I've been collecting since 1987 but only started NGC collecting this year. I started with two fairly straightforward sets: 1959-Present Lincoln Proofs and this Presidential D

It Has Been a Long, Long Time!

Live from the back burner! Greetings all! Wow! The site has a new look! It looks better as I certainly have gained a few wrinkles in my time away I have been off pursuing my education, which coupled with my full time job, has taken a substantial amount of time away from my collecting interests. I can't believe that I have not yet submitted any coins for grading, and I re-newed my membership last December! I certainly need to get back on track. I recently also had a medical scare as

The Results - New white Tuxedos

Oh , tell me I didn't do it again? (July of 2010)I just rejoined the Registry for another year so I had the five free submissions to send in and what did I go and do? I went down to the bank box and got out 5 ANACS grade Ireland coins to cross over into NGC slabs. That wasn't the problem. Instead of doing a crossover and making sure that they'd come back a certain grade or at least in the ANACS slabs, I went and cracked the out and sent them in as raw unslabed coins. Doing that always scares t

SOCIETY CHANGES

WOW I hope we don't change the format after we get use to this one! Society and friends, I threw a couple Peace Dollars together to start a new set last month but didn't check out the new site until today after selling 2 Morgans. I have started a A S E set which I also added a couple spots. Anyway, I decided to add the low-ball coins to my Morgans and all the coins I sold last year "$26,000" worth were available for entry into my set. I sure am hopeful that I caught everything in time, you

collectors are holding back? I haven't been buying many top quality coins for a while. The simple truth is that for the sets I'm building, there just haven't been that many "stand out" coins for sale. I have built on some smaller sets and picked up a few odds and ends here and there....... First, I just sent a submission with my limited edition 1935-2010 Canada proof commem set. Secondly, I purchased the regular issue 2010 Canada proof set and when those arrive I'll send in the 10c, $2 and b
