This overload of quarters is the end of money as we know it

Who else thinks hundreds of circulated quarter designs in a couple decades is just TOO MUCH? Greetings collectors, I just waved the magic loupe over a couple rolls of Grand Canyon quarters (thanks, Kerry!) ... and I've got a few thoughts. 1. Putting a design of a bunch of rocks on a coin made of metal ripped out of the ground is not my idea of great coinage. Next time, the mint (errr, Congress) should choose FACES, BUILDINGS and ANIMALS, please! 2. Grading a design of a bunch of rocks t

What's going on ????

What happened to values ..... Greetings all; I came here early Friday afternoon and checked my Kennedy's and ALL the FMV of every coin was now in red and only a fraction of their FMV from the day before. Then went to my Ike's and the very same. I called NGC and talked to Lisa and she was not aware of what was going on but passed on the info to higher ups. Still haven't heard back from anyone but is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon ? moondoggy To see old comment

ANOTHER GORGEOUS SITE...

Actually in "two" senses of the word! "Two" gorgeous sites. Greetings Collectors, It's getting close to three in the afternoon here on the east coast and my "excitement" level is starting to build. It's almost "MAIL-TIME". Every time I use the word mail time, it brings back memories of my two teenage sons who use to religiously watch "Blues Clues". All of you with "little people" know of this "kids show". Anyway I'm waiting on,.. what else, more silver coins. (40% Kennedy's duhh) I ordered a

TWO "NEW" COINS ARRIVED TODAY

Gold is almost $1400, but for all you "math dudes" this dropping ratio is almost getting "scary". Greetings Collectors, My friend out in Ca. at Teletrade auctions really came through for me today. I won the Franklin half pictured below on Wed night. As I was leaving my house for work at 10:30 this morning (I had forgotten something and had to go back to the house. I don't usually start my day at 10+ am) I almost backed into my mailman. I thought something "freaky" at first, like I was being

Recieved my 1973 MS65 Eisenhower today

If you are the person responsible for getting this coin graded send me a shout. Friends, I have started a new series of Eisenhower Dollars - MS. I will add pictures later but the 1973 MS65 will be a challenge due to the fact that the owner must have ate fried chicken before slipping his coins into the poly-slips for grading.   Dude!!! If you realize this coin was yours send me a shout and I will buy you a pair of gloves. When I complete the set in the grades I have selected I will purchase

NO SALE !!

think you want to sell,,think again I recently decided to part with an ungraded set of Peace dollars to help further my Morgan collection. I thought long and hard about this and came to the conclusion, that this was for the greater good. I did a rough grade of each coin to figure a starting price for the online auction. Then I listed them for sale and waited. During the auction I received several questions about the coins, which made me sit down and study them more than I ever had. The au

WOW! WHAT A RIDE!!!

"ALL" of our "gold & silver coins are going to "Skyrocket", but will these be worth hanging "onto"??? At one time each was "redeemable" for a silver dollar... Greeting Collectors, I took the day off and have just finished re-shooting photos of all of my Franklins in my set #1. Last night on Teletrade, I ran across a great deal on yet another Franklin half. Most of the time this auction house "IS NOT" the best deal. I have dealt with them for over 5 years now and have landed many good-gre

GOLD WINS IN THE END BUT WILL WE LOSE ?

As collectors our collections benefit and we are KEENLY interested when precious metal prices surge but in the end will we be winners or losers because of it ? Let me start by saying I enjoy the updates I read here , especially from W.K.F . concerning his thoughts on the price of precious metals . I too share many of his thoughts on the subject and appreciate him sharing his . However the one thing that interests me more than the upward price inclination we have seen are the WHYS and WHEREFOR

A Freshly Minted Collector

Everything has to have a beginning; so this is it! At some point a bag full of coins moves from being just that, to being a collection. I?m not really sure how that happens, maybe it?s when the bag gets to heavy or the need to spend some of the coinage overrides the desire to horde massive amounts of metal away for future years. Whatever the reason it has happened and history (my personal history? that is) will mark today as the day I became a coin collector. Now, after perusing several websi

All?s Well That Ends Well

A disappointing purchase made over a year ago that in the end turned out well. Have you ever purchased a coin that you have come to regret buying? I?m sure that at one time or another we have all purchased coins that afterwards have us scratching our head and wondering what in the world we were thinking. While there is no way short of a buying freeze to prevent the time-to-time aberrant purchase, well-defined collecting goals do help to minimize the chances. It is always in our best interest t

I see ... (a word about NGC's competition)

I just joined PCGS for a better look at populations than can be gotten through auction sites. Now that I'm a member of both NGC and PCGS, I can truly compare the services. I'm not experienced enough in the grades to really compare grading across the services. I'm sure that there are some variances. It's possible that one service grades more easily than another. Certainly auction houses see much better results for modern coins from PCGS than from NGC. But I don't think it's in NGC's best

2010 P Sacagawea Missing Eye

Mutiple errors Lately the US Mint has created some very interesting errors with their Sacagawea Business Strike Dollars. This one has a missing eye, parts of the mouth and face are missing. A Hugh Die Break too. I don't collect error coins but I know other collectos love them. Amazing when you are looking at how the strike is on the coin and then your eye catches that she is missing hers! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. gotagofish

It's great to have friends Practical every day I have someone respond to my online name of gotagofish either from ebay or the NGC REGISTRY. I enjoy talking to people all over the country about coin collecting and fishing. The weather is great here on the TREASURE COAST. If you are in town contact me at snapher3006@yahoo.com and maybe we will go fishing or just talk about our EAGLES. Have a nice day - John To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. When things get serious!

This is that exact moment. Today I went and sold a few coins Ive owned for a couple years. I made money on all the coins sold so I decided to make my most expensive purchase to date. People talk about the exact time when they knew things were getting serious. When this coin comes in the mail and I add it to my set I will take the #10 spot. Ive had my eye on this coin for a few months, it is a 1964 NGC PF70 W CAMEO. It is the highest graded washington before 1974. Before I purchased it I did a

TWO VERY GOOD MOVES

I bet ya know what ones gonna be... Greetings Collectors, I have been doing some "touch ups" on my Franklin Half Set #1 with descriptions and re-shooting a few photos. As most of you know, I'm a Franklin half fan (which is short for "fanatic" & that's exactly what I would call myself) and have numerous sets and well over 100 graded ones ranging from MS-63 FBL, right on up to several in 66 with the "full bell line designation. The reason for so many sets is that I find it hard to pass on

Started my Morgans

Morgan Mania 11/1/10 ... I finally started my Morgan Set. I'm working on all the inexpensive MS coins first, then I will move on to the CC's down the line.   11/2/10 ... I've been putting off for awhile on the Morgans, I've been concentrating on the smaller denominations first.   I'm 5 coins away from completing a run (mostly raw) on the Cents from 1793 to date (all the Dansco holes, I'm not a big variety collector). I'm missing...you guessed it, all three 1

Sold...on silver!

Thanks to WKF. I must say that I have never really collected anything but modern coinage, basically because of the cost - I have a meager budget. However, reading all of WKF's journals has sold me on collecting some silver. I started out this week buying about 1/3 of the mercury dimes although only in low, raw coins to fill a Dansco album. Before I knew it, I had purchased about a dozen Barber dimes (another Dansco set), a 1776 Seated Liberty dime, and about 1/2 dozen silver bars (mostly 1

Through Virgin Eyes!

There is nothing like working with a new collector to get new focus. My 24 year old son came home from work the other day. He was quite excited, almost electric. He promptly produced 3 $2 bills he had traded out of the register. They we relatively new issues (I think 1976 and 1995) and in circulated condition but not terribly worn. I sort of chuckled because I had seen $2 bills before but these were his. I didn?t take long for me to figure out that he had that same look in his eyes that I had
