A new Morgan with something special

My first "Plus" acquisition. I really got this at a great price what with having a premium because of the (+). This is 1 of 2 Morgans that have been given a (+) for this particular year and mint. I try to follow the Official Red Book Guide to Morgan Silver Dollars when acquiring Morgans and this particular year it stated an MS64 was the optimal collecting grade to acquire. So with the (+) I figured it would be a big positive. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New

"NATIONAL PARK QUARTERS"?

How Many PARKS ARE THERE? Will each State only have One? or will they have a different quarter for each park? Here in UTAH we have three parks! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

A Wonderful Time

The coin show was great and I've added to my collection. The coin show has come and gone for this year. There were some high points and some disappointments this time. I think that the number of dealers present has increased yet again. The high point was watching the old mint press #1 in action. I've always seemed to miss this in past years. The low points were the increased admission ($8 to the museum) and that they didn't bring the CC collection out of the vault. You could view the col

On the side line looking in...

Patient...patient...patient...keeping the kid outside the candy store. As stated in June (a couple of months ago), I have some financial obligation to take care of. I am pacing on the side line as the coin world past me by...Barber Dimes, Barber Quarters, Lincoln Wheat Backs, American Eagle series (gold and silver), and "the nail biter and stomach puncher" Gold Buffalo. Yes...it is not easy on the side line when you are an active player (in any sport or activity). But you got to do what you

Question on a Roosevelt dime

What does a "T" mean I just purchased a 1960 MS67* Roosevelt dime. My question is on the label it reads " MS 67* T. I am wondering what significance the "T" is. It is an older slab. It has small barcode and VERY small cert number. I am new to Roosevelts, but not unkowledgeable in coins. Anyone who has insight (and willing to share it) would be appreciated. Thank You to all that offer me assistance. Be Well, Todd

2010 Buchanan First Day Issue Submission

WOW....one MS68!! After 2 boxes of Buchanan "D" dollars, I was only able to submit eight "D"s. I felt I had one MS67. Out of 12 rolls of "P" dollars, I submitted eight of these as well. I felt I had a good chance of three MS67. I was right on both counts. one Buchanan D MS67 FDI three Buchanan P MS67 FDI but...wait for it....I found my first "P" MS68 FDI.....YES! I want to thank Josh for his help with the "P" rolls. Good luck to everyone that collects the Presidents. To see ol

World's Fair of Money

The most amazing coin show I've seen! This year was my first World's Fair of money. It was incredible, with over 1000 tables! I had the pleasure of being 6 inches in front a sheet of $100,000 bills! I finished off my Quarter Type collection and my half dollar collection (With the elusive 1877 O) If i have a chance to go to Chicago next year, I'll be there! Two New Coins Are Home!

Even my wife was impressed with them... The FedEx delivery came today with my two acquisitions from Heritage's auction at the ANA show in Boston. In my last journal I discussed the 1841 large cent upgrade. The coin is nicer than I expected, based on the photos. Even my wife was impressed. She can't understand the collecting mentality, and wonders why I would want more than one large cent because (she says) they all look the same... But she instantly, and again after more detailed examination,

Assembling a Nice Circulated Coin Registry Set

We?d all love to assemble mint-state classic coin sets, but realistically, it ain?t gonna happen for most of us. As far as I am concerned, there is no coin more beautiful than a large, 19th Century, high-grade cameo proof, add a touch of teal toning, and I?d think the coin came from heaven. Nonetheless, coins like the one I just described only come at a hefty price. For a good portion of us, including myself, to collect 19th century coins we have to settle for something less than proof and min

What to do...

A bit of a windfall I found out recently that, starting next month and continuing for 9 months, I'll be getting a regent's fellowship in addition to my graduate assistantship. After taxes, it's like saying I'm going to have about $600 added onto a $1400 income. I can live on the $1400, and that basically makes the $600 gravy. I can do whatever I want with it basically. While I will save some of it to rebuild my cash reserves, I'm not going to save all of it as cash in the bank because that j

Cracked a 1000!

3 new additions After 5 years I have finally cracked the top 1000! This Sunday I attended the Westford coin show in MA. It was surprisingly sill very busy even with the Boston show just a few weeks ago. There was a lot of action in the bullion and junk silver arena and a lot of new product in most of the cases. My purchases that put me over were 3 AU 58 $5 dollar coronet half eagles. There were seveeral of these at many tables and it was interesting to see the price ranges across the show.

Collecting from the Heart

This is my first Journal Entry. I started collecting as a child with Wheat Pennies given to me from my Dad. My Dad died in Aug. 2008 from Cancer of the brain it was a long and very sad time in my life. My Mom told me my Dad would want me to have his coin collection. So I took it very proudly because it was one of the things that he and I would do together on Sundays. I have in the last two years added to this collection of my Dad's (very costly at times) but I hope to oneday pass this on to my

This and That

Annual coin show time and my Winter project gets off to an early start. Surprise! I actually made the journal entry for this week. The annual coin show--at least the one I always attend--starts next Friday. I always enjoy the walk down to the Nevada State Museum (the old Carson City Mint) for this show. It gives me a chance to look over the CC collection yet again. Always with pleasure and delight when I discover something new. There should be 38 dealers if everyone arrives. I must remembe

Coins, Coffee and Quiet

Sunday mornings while most of the world is asleep It seems like it has been forever since I last sat down on a quiet Sunday morning and dedicated time to enjoying my collection. Fortunately, I am the only early weekend riser in the house. I?m sure there are a thousand other things I could be doing but I don?t. This quiet time is perfect for updating my registry descriptions and photos or just working with my raw sets. I?m not distracted with the mundane activities and noise of the everyday as

2 To Go

Nice Welcome home gift Just returned from a trip to the Windy City and found these 2 gems in my mail pile. The 95 Silver Kennedy has been a tough find in recent months that wasn't "above" FMV. Also was nice to add another MS70 to the Silver Eagles. Took a few items to my local coin store last week and "sold" em. I get a much better selling price there than at the Bay and there are NO shipping charges. The guy who runs the shop has been in coins and stamps for almost 50 years. He rea

Finding "Peace" with PEACE DOLLARS & Mint Sets...& silver bullion...

It's actually quite "Peaceful" on the other side of the Numismatic "Rat Race"... as long as there is still "silver" involved... Greetings Collectors, I have been spending a great deal of time on research and photography and find that this "slower" pace suits me well. I had thought that with the hiatus put on any significant coin purchases would be awful. But this slowdown to "smell the roses" has been a good thing. I am trying to see where I stand with my 1/2 dozen mint sets that I've been

Mixed Emotions

When to release a coin sold Here I sit with strong feelings on both sides of the fence about when a "person" should release a sold coin from their collection. As I've stated in the past I fully believe that an individual has the right to protect their property and themselves until the transfer is verified complete. I now have a coin I purchased on Ebay almost two weeks ago that the individual still hasn't released and NGC has not forced the exchange. I have the coin and proof that it was purch

That's service! I just received my most recent submission back from NGC. I Finally Found A Icelandic 1925 2 Kronur

I Have Searched For Nearly Seven Years Hello Everyone After looking for seven years for a 1925 2 Kronur coin that was anything better then a VF may have come to light. About just a little over a month ago i got a email from Brunn Rasmussen Auction House in Denmark, Well I have been getting these notices for six years now and none of there auctions never held any Icelandic coins that I wanted until this one. With no thought of finding any thing in the auction I lazily browsed the catalog an
