Goals for 2011

These may be a stretch, but that's what makes it fun. We're a little ways into the new year, but I think I have finally narrowed down some collecting goals. 1. Achieve 30,000 points. 2. Finish my Kennedy Proof set. 3. Get to 20% completion on my Morgan set. 4. Get to within 75% completion on my Lincoln Cent set. 5. Have a complete Sacagawea set. 6. Start a MS Silver Eagle set. (Any completion percentage is fine) I think that should be enough to keep me busy throughout the

BLUE LABEL SILVER EAGLE? Does anyone think the market for the MS70 BLUE LABELS will continue to go higher or will the price eventually come down. Right now they are listed as the same value as the BLACK LABEL in MS70. I have seen them on e-bay for 1200-1400, while the Black labels are still 600-700. Question about Full bell lines, full steps, full torch, etc.

Why don't proof coins get these designations. As a collector of primarily proof coins, mostly raw but a few of them graded. I've noticed that proof coins don't seem to be recognized by the major grading companies NGC,PCGS and the others as having full bell lines, FT,FB,FS,etc. Why is this? Or do they grade them as such and I've just not seen any for sale? It would seem to me to be just as relevant a grading criteria for proof coins as well as mint state ones. Any thoughts or comments on this

Came home today to six coins in my mailbox.

one of them a beautiful Franklin Cameo. I Received a 2011 PF70UC Clad Kennedy Half Early Releases, 1967 SMS MS67FT Roosevelt Dime, 1962 & 1963 PF67 Franklin Half?s, 1879 S MS63 Morgan Dollar, and a coin I have been wanting, a nice 1957 PF67CA Franklin Half. The coin borders on Ultra Cameo with terrific contrast against beautiful black mirrors. It's really amazing to see the contrast of the 1957 PF67CA Franklin next that of the 2011 PF70UC Kennedy. The Franklin just blows my mind consider

The Other Side of the Aisle

Make no mistake, I am a coin collector through and through, but occasionally I get interested in collecting paper currency. The definition of numismatics according to Wikipedia is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects. However, when I typically think of the term, I rarely associate it with anything other than coins. Occasionally though, for various reasons, there is paper currency on ?The Other Side of the Aisle? that catches my eye.

FINALLY Closing in on a COMPLETE Set of US CENTS !!!!!

Close to completing a complete collection on US Cents 1793 to Current. It's been a long and EXPENSIVE road, but I'm on the verge of completing a set of US Cents from 1793 to current. I'm still missing a couple of Keys (1793 Chain and Liberty Cap, 1799, and 1955 DDO). The reality is setting in though, as I added the 1793 Wreath and 1804 today, the reality of completion in setting in being only four coins away. I'm bidding on a Chain, so should be down to three tomorrow. The money it takes t

The Long Journey

Is nearing its end. Sometime in 2007 I decided to take my huge mishmash of a coin collection and turn it into something fully organized, quite a bit smaller, and quite a bit more manageable for myself and my beautiful little heiress. This was no easy task as my collection consisted of everything under the sun from the wonderful issues of the Republic of Marshall Islands, through various Franklin Mint issues (Thankfully bought on the secondary market for a fraction of their issue price), t

The Importance of Being There

No, not the importance of the Peter Sellers movie... As you may recall, recently I was a little excited about a nice purchase from the Dan Holmes Collection of Late Date Large Cents, sold a couple weekends ago by M&G/Goldberg. It seemed to me that I should have gotten a bill by now, so I checked the website. The results page showed my bid amount as the winning bid, but in the "My Purchases" area, there was nothing. So I called. Apparently there was some website glitch. Despite the fact

"THE" BEST BOOK ON "HALf DOLLARS" 1948-2010 PERIOD.

I have been waiting on this "totally" "completely" "awesome" "incredible" book for over a year. Greetings Collectors, About all I can say is this book will tell you everything you need to know about the Franklin & Kennedy half series. To borrow the quote on the back of this "hard cover" beauty from one of the "high priest's" of coin collecting, Q. David Bowers, where he says: "Between these two covers is just about everything you wanted to know, and more than you ever imagined existed".

Buffalo Hunting

Adding a high-grade Buffalo nickel brings me full circle Oh, I remember it well. Rows and rows of old Buffalo nickels sat in a red velvet-lined shelf in a little coin shop in the Bannister Mall in Kansas City, Missouri, teasing me in their splendor. I?m guessing it was around 1984, and 12-year-old Shanky kept his nose pressed to that rotating glass case for what probably amounted to hours during that 3-day stay over the summer of ?84. The old clerk behind the counter could only roll his eyes a

BIRTHDAYS

A good reason to capitalize on coin collecting. Friends, It's February and the bills are rising due to costs and heat. I have done well in adding quite a few variety coins in January that were offered to me by Bammer. They were a great addition to my collection and sent me in a different direction of collecting. All of the coins I purchased were nice detail and no toning or trashy rims, "just clear luster". I entered a journal last month needing a Silver Eagle to rid of a big red minus 394

2006 Upgrage

Down to the wire Fellow Collectors Some of us get collectors fever when starting a registry set. Then the closer you get to completion we go from collectors fever to collector?s obsession. I am now at collector?s obsession. In my quest to have the highest NGC graded 2006 US coin set I am on my final upgrade journey. In the competitive registry category I had to list them in 6 areas, however in the custom section I was able to assemble one registry set. As I am trying to assemble all 10

$50 and a local coin shop...

Better than spending $800 for a Super Bowl ticket without a seat!! Sometimes I get wrapped up in certified collecting that I forget how cool this hobby can be when properly appreciated. I spent about two hours at the local coin shop on Saturday looking through mint sets, Eisenhower dollars for an album and buying some raw Roosevelt dimes for several Unc albums I have going... Spent about $50 and received hours of enjoyment, grading, placing them in albums and researching my purchases for RPM

Satin Coins Volume two

Well, they did it. There has been talk about doing away with the Satin coins that were distributed with the Uncirculated Mint Sets for the last few years. It is official; the Satin coin is history. I have been putting together a MS69 Lincoln set and have done pretty well. I have never had to pay $800.00 (eBay, or beg, borrow or steal to get the coins I want. They come up on auction occasionally and I get them at a price I am willing to pay. If memory serves, I have 5 coins left; 2007-D

My five + year journey to build a set of 1913 Proof coins from the cent to the half dollar A 1913 Proof Set A Collector?s Chronicle By Bill Jones Almost 30 years ago I owned an original 1909 Proof set. I acquired the set at the 1976 ANA convention which was held in New York City. I sold the set in the early 1980s to raise the down payment on my first home. The Money Is Gone This Month!

When the heat goes, so do any funds to buy coins. It was just one of those things. Two weeks ago the heat pump here at the house rolled over and died. Thank goodness I don?t live in New England anymore; still North Carolina does get cold in February. But when you need to come up with a big chunk of pocket change to repair the heating unit for the house, buying coins doesn?t seem quite so important. So any money I had set aside for coins this month got diverted to the cost of the repair of the

Gone Wild Followup

Clarification of my point... I've gotten a few responses to my previous post about the recent auction result at Heritage for a 1945-S walking half. One was a comment from a currency collector saying it's a nice coin. A friend pointed out another offered by a dealer for $29K. The third was worded such that I'm not sure if the writer is similarly amazed at the $37K result or not. Anyway, I was simply observing the large discrepancy in Heritage's results for the 45-S half in MS67, depending on

RE Sibmitting

Proof coins should never be touched Hi; My advice to you would be not to submit it. Proof coins should never be handle without being protected. It could very well develop spots and lots of other undesirable things in the future becase it was unprotected. Later JimL4004 To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here.
