More Currency, Less Sets

One benefit possibly will be higher grades. Hi all, Well, I know I've been waffling on this for the last year. On Wednesday night (? I think it was) I took the big plunge. Some of you who have followed my sets have probably already noticed my Franklin FBL set is gone, along with several other sets. I've decided to delete them, sell a major portion of my coins so I can afford some more currency. I've come to the conclusion that my interests I've held long term is the way to go. What I'm goi

Green Lizard

This one came in just yesterday. In one of my previous Journals I have said that 2Z commemorative strikes have "Animals of the World" series. Silver 20Z have the same series which is parallel, same subject, not always same design. This one's my first of that series graded by NGC, enjoy! Happy collecting! Got Greenie?

Out of the wallet and into the collection... From the comfort of my home, listening to a new Bluegrass CD ("Daybreak" by Sierra Hull), I just watched a portion of tonight's Heritage auction session in Sacramento. I had what I expected to be a winning bid already placed on an 1857-O half dime. It's NGC graded MS 66, and unlike my other half dimes, has a relatively boldly colored obverse. The toning isn't quite as smooth as I'd like, but I think it's pretty anyway. It's blue in the center, but

Soul Crusher

My soul was crushed again Over the last few days I have been watching my submission invoice change status. Today when I logged on I seen that my status was changed to "Finalized"... my heart started to pump like crazy. I hit the link and was leveled. I seen that all six of my SAE were graded 69. When I was home on R&R I went over these coins with a 10X loop. I didn't see a single pin anywhere. These coins have been in their original mint packaging since the day they left the mint. I also

Should have chose the Premium Membership

Spent more than I had to. I am new to coin collecting so when I join NGC Collectors Society I should have chose the premium options and not the associate. When I sent in my first five coins the cost would have made for the premium membership. As it stands I paid $114.00 for five coins and with the premium membership they would have been free. $114.00 + $39.00 = more money spent. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 1981 D Jefferson Nickel Business Strike MS66 NGC 5FS

Only 4 exists in the NGC census!! Once is a great while you find a coine worth grading while looking for something else. I usually buy 1981 mint sets on Ebay now and again looking for that MS67 SBA. I have been lucky before so I am still hopeful it will happen again. This 1981 D Jefferson Nickel Business Strike MS66 NGC 5FS coin has lots of luster and a great strike, hard to find from the 70's and 80's. I usually don't collect business strike nickles but I could not just toss it away eith

JUST CALL ME OLD FASHION BUT IT'S THE WAY I FEEL.

THE PAST OR THE PRESENT WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE? I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT I SPARED YOU THIS TIME.Greetings Vibrant Community Members: After reading Beaw?s post I had to write a little about the subject. As some of you know I am not a fan of modern coins. Most are boring and in my opinion have little value. If the minting of coins of yester year is compared with the minting of today?s coins we would see that as in all modern manufacturing the human element has been removed as much as possible. T

Mint Sets - Not your average coins - sometimes...

This post was inspired by Walnutto and his 1981 D Jefferson Nickel I'm always searching OBW rolls, mint sets, singles, dealer stock at shows or any source that I can find nice BU coins. There are gems to be found if one has patience, patience, patience... Generally, I'm looking for dimes, but I also review the other coins for gems like Walnutto's Jefferson. I generally have pick up points on the other coins like steps/building on Jefferson's, the shield and eagle's breast for Kennedy's and t

ANOTHER PURCHASE TODAY

$5.22------in pennies, nickles, and dollars Yep, I will soon be the proud owner of a few more coins. I purchased some coins that will add three slots to my Type Set. As usual I like to buy more than 1 of each to start a different series or set. I may run out of room on the first page with this purchase on my home page. Don't be upset to check some of the earlier sets and see only 1 coin listed. It only takes 1 to start a set, but can you stop at 1? I have tried to save as much as I can "of

Same Old, Same Old

How can we redesign our coins in a way that makes them a true ambassador to the World. I was laying in bed last night, unable to sleep, because I could not get the idea of coin design change out of my mind. To say I am tired of our Presidents is probably too mild. In fact, I just wish all those Presidents would just go away to be replaced by a whole set of new historical figures to truly represent the greatness of our Nation. The Sacagawea Dollar is a prime example of this concept. We h

A Real "+"

First one for my collection I just received the first addition to my collection with a "+" grade - the 1945-S Walker pictured below. The "+" designation increases the Registry score by 568 points, which is more that a 50% increase compared to the MS-66 it replaces. It's also the highest grade as I ever hope to get for a 45-S as the prices for MS-67's are out of my reach. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

A nice snag...

One of my favorites As many of you may have read last week, I'm not the biggest fan of the 50 States/Territories/America The Beautiful (ATB) series of Quarter designs. I am grateful for their effect on the hobby, but I think the series has run its course, and the next few years of ATB quarters will really drag on. However, there are a few beauties among the banal. I can easily pick out 5 designs that I find beautiful and these always catch my eye as truly stunning. In no particular order,

The Red Books March On

Or how an old book always manages to keep its appeal I bought my first Red Book back in 1968 when I started collecting wheatback Lincolns to place in Whitman folders. I kept the doubles and triples in a plastic sewing box purchased at Woolworth's. The rounded troughs where the spools went were the perfect shape for placing rows of unrolled Cents. The bottom of the sewing box provided storage for my Red Book, my partially filled albums, and other misc. items. The whole package came complete

The POWER of COINS my DRUG of CHOICE

Dimes and Dollars both old but still NEW GEETINGS FELLOW COIN COLLECTORS &/or HOARDERS: It was an exceptional weekend for acquiring coins for me any way. I won two coins at auction and one I purchased from a friend. The auctions were both on eBay. I got a excellent 1942 MS67 FB NGC Mercury dime for 60% of FMV pop 213 w/ 1 graded better, and a 1922 S Peace dollar in PCGS MS64 slightly below Grey sheet bid in both cases I made the minimum bid and won with that. First Time Coin Submission

Waiting for my coins to be graded with batted breath. I am new to coin collecting. My friend got me started with the 2009 Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Proof Mint Set. After that I started buying the American Silver Eagle Proof and Mint State the year before they stop the Mint Proof in 2009. But I love the coin so much I am on a quest to find a 1986 American Silver Eagle Proof 70. So I sent in a couple of Eagles some proofs others mint state. I am hoping for a 70 but if not I will continue to

FINISHED

Bought the last three over the weekend... Well my SUSAN B'S are complete. Had to buy all the "S" mints in 66, but hopefully they will all be here by this weekend. Got done sooner than expected, only (overpaid) for one coin, the 81S, the guy wouldn't budge on his price. He's the one that wants $4200 for the MS67. I'll probaly take a break for the rest of the month, pay my taxes, and if that doesn't put me in the poor house I'll have to start something for me this time!! Good luck to everyone in

Say A Prayer For Our Friends in Japan

And another for our Friends in New Zealand Folks, I know this is off-topic but I would like to ask all my Friends and Fellow Collectors to take a moment and say a prayer for the Japanese and New Zealand people. The devastation is enormous and I hope their recoverys are swift. For my Friends and Fellow Collectors along the west coast, please make sure your earthquake kits are ready and your family plans are set. DC and Territories

Nice addition to 21st Century Type Set The quarter designs post-1998 really haven't piqued my interest too much (Statehood, Territories, and now America the Beautiful). I know the Statehood Quarters series really rekindled a lot of interest in coin collecting, but I could never keep up. And, I'm much more of a traditionalist. I like designs that stick around and become "classic" and part of the fabric of the U.S. culture. I kind of miss that beautiful 1932-1998 eagle reverse. Again, I'm g

Finished my Rosies!!

Well Sort of Finished with the Rosies! Good Morning All, I put the last piece of the puzzle together in my 46-64 Circ. Rosie's yesterday! Currently ranked 14th. Not that I want you to think it is done, by no means is it done. Just have it at 100%! There are still 20+ coins to be upgraded, but that can be said for most sets. This set will never be a #1 set in the rankings. As I have mentioned before, I try to be a purist to NGC. What I have completed is a set of coins that are ALL NGC coi
