My Trade Dolars Begin to Arriive Part II

The Great Britain Trade Dollar I just wanted to show you the obverse of my newly graded, MS62, Great Britain Trade Dollar, the black marks you see near the trident are tarnish that occurred because the cardboard coin holder thingie (what do they call those?) had two little tears during its long storage. The mint is Bombay. Enjoy.. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

My Trade Dollars Begin To Arrive

And I have taken the first small steps in my collection of Trade Dollars Friends, I have just received the pictures of my latest submissions to NGC and I would like you to see the Beautiful Straits Settlement Dollar. Per the Encyclopedia Britannica, The Straits Settlements were a former British crown colony on the Strait of Malacca, consisting of Penang, Singapore, Malacca, and Labuan. As you may already know, most of my Trade Dollars, including my U.S. Trade Dollar have chop marks. The cho

A couple Lincolns for my President set

I had to purchase 4 to fill 2 slots Friends, I have been searching for First Day presidents lately. I did not think that the set would be so much work to keep up when I traded for a rank 32 all first day issues. I have searched everywhere I can think of and finally came up on a 2010 Lincoln PCGS 4 coin set for sale. I don't really care about a holder but my wife has told me she does like the presidents pics on the PCGS so this purchase will go over smoothly with her (with a little extra sh

Since we broached the subject

This doesn't make sense to me I still don't understand why a CAC certified coin carries a premium I mean take an NGC certified coin. It has gone through 3 graders to arrive at the particular grade. So now you send it to someone else to "see" if they agree ? As most know, grading is not an exact science, so how can someone pay a premium for a CAC coin which in essence it is just another graders opinion. A total waste of money and time in my opinion. Where does it end ....... To see old

My pictures are final coming out pretty good and I love the Slide Show feature. Five more upgrades and I will be able to rest (FAT CHANCE) with the 1943P MS67 FB at the top of the list. Al

Prices On NP 5 Ounce Bullion Coins Are Coming Down.

Just arrived, a Grand Canyon Five Ounce Bullion Silver Coin I got for $75.00 above spot. I just purchased a PCGS MS64 Grand Canyon Five Ounce Bullion Silver Coin one that wouldn?t break my bank for $75.00 over spot ($37.00). The PGCS price guide puts the coin at $350.00 so I am happy with the MS64. Prices on these bullion coins are coming down. I believe the reason is many suppliers are putting up for sale so they can get their allotment for the 2011 5 ounce bullion coins. The US Mint states t

1946-S/S Walker

Highest (only) graded example by NGC I bought a 1946-S Walker through a Heritage auction as a MS-66. THe auction photos looked like a S/S, even though it was not labeled as such. I sent it to NGC for Variety review. The NGC Census says it's now the only MS-66 VP-001 certified by NGC; in fact, the only one in any grade. This probably won't last long but it's nice to have the only one, even for a little while. My original photo clearly shows the S/S but it's over the 75kb file size limit f

COIN COLLECTING IS A HOBBY or OBSESSION not COMPETITION SOME MAY DISAGREE!!!!!

Collect what you like, like what you Collect. Coin Collectors: Once upon a time I too got caught up in the points race. I had some high-ranking sets including a #1 shared with around 25 others and received two awards for a 1st place set with the 25 others. The coins were easy to get, not very expensive and worth lots of points, I amassed over 100,000 registry points. I finally realized that I did not even like these coins and even with their cost being relatively low that they were in fact l

Variety coin or Error?

1883 Indian Head Penny DDO? Hi, I'm new to coin collecting and especially getting grading. I need help please. I just bought a 1883 indian head penny with ddo, but NGC variety plus does not list this coin. Is this not a variety coin? Does this coin an error coin? Will NGC grade it as error coin or ddo variety even though it does not list on their variety plus list. Thank you all for help. Michael To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Early Releases

Just what does Early Releases label offer?? Let me first state that I am not against the "Early Releases" label but I do not understand why we need it at all. I could see it when it was just the Silver Eagles and how some collectors want just that label or collect every label that exists. So... as a collector...do we collect the coin or the grading company or the label? Does anyone really care if they get an Early Release nickel or Presidential dollar when there is no extra points given t

Changes are needed now for Registry Set Awards!

Registry Awards have lost their luster! Again, This may come across as mean and a poor sport but changes are needed for the registry awards. Cancer has spread across many registry sets and doesn't seem to have any cure and is not slowing down. LLC's have taken over many modern sets buying up all high grade coins overpaying many times what the coins would be worth in the future all for a small piece of paper saying...I'm am number 1 again... but it also is saying "I have unlimited resources

Gimmick?

Never thought I'd like this one...but I was wrong. A little over a week ago, I ran across one of the First Spouse copper medals. This is the poor-man's version of the First Spouse gold coins the Mint has been releasing. Maybe it was the classic design, but I couldn't pass it up. Let's just say I wasn't expecting much. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised with what I got. I couldn't put this one down for a good 10 minutes today...really stunning. I'm not running out to snag all of these, bu

Local Coin Shops or the Internet - that is the ?

Are coin shops a thing of the past? Anyone else get frustrated by prices?!? I stopped at the local coin shop to browse and perhaps buy a coin or two, but I couldn't bring myself to pay the prices they wanted. I know they were most likely negotiable and I know the price of silver is sky high, but... BU Morgans $70-100, I know they had them "graded" as MS 64, but for common dates it seemed rather excessive to me. It's getting harder and harder to find cheap coins that are astetically pleasing

A Yen for Japanese Silver

And Chop Marks. Folks, I am about to send 8 Japanese Silver Yen and 1 Japanese Trade Dollar to NGC for grading. For the most part they are going to come back as Details graded because almost every one of them has light, to moderate, and in the case of the Trade Dollar, heavy chop marks. I found an excellent page on the net to help with the dating. Most were from the Meiji period (up til 1911 with one of the coins being a Taisho coin from 1914. All these coins are 900 fine silver dollar size

A Friend wants to INVEST

I had a wild phone call Friday while working. Friends, As I do different jobs and meet so many people I sometimes bring up my coin hobby. While working Friday I received a phone call from a person that I had done some remodel work for last year. He wanted my opinion on purchasing gold or silver. Now he also added that he had $5000 now but wanted $5000 more in the near future. I told him he could get a little less than 4 ounces of Gold which will gain value gradually. My best opinion to h

PCGS vs.NGC

to sell a coin for more or.... I enjoy reading when other coin collectors comment on grading. I wonder if we as a group of collectors should discuss who is better NGC vs. PCGS or should we break it down into something more important. Better struck/graded coin or bigger sales price if we sell? Lets think about it for a second. From, my past experiences, not being a dealer and only a casual collector, I feel its not that one is better than the other. Only that one company allows more slight ma

PCGS vs. NGC Part III

Wow! Lots of comments and opinions. Received the entire gamut of responses from this is a stupid and foolish endeavor to real opinions of grade and condition. The overall intent of this exercise and the reason for the "stupid blow ups" was to show the real discrepancies in the photo. This is what you and I and the TPG will/should see when reviewing the coins through a 10X loupe. Full size photos of coins can easily hide many imperfections as many of us undoubtedly have seen when buying coins

Final spot

Last coin in my 21st Century Type Set I'll keep this short and sweet. A couple days ago, I got the last coin to finish my 21st Century Type Set. I hoped for a while that I would be able to fill the 2000-2003 Jefferson Nickel slot with an MS68FS example, but that is well out of my price range for the time being. I picked up a nice 2001-P MS67FS example. It's a little baggy on the high spots, but that seems to be par for the course for these years. I thought the detail and completely unbro

PCGS vs. NGC

I'm tired of everyone exalting PCGS... This journal will be two posts and then a follow up. I hope this will be interesting or perhaps even fun. One of the two coins is a PCGS 1973 Roosevelt dime and the other an NGC 1973 Roosevelt dime. My concentration is on two components of the dimes - the forehead and hair and the cheek and ear. I'll tell you all that the dimes are graded between MS 65 and MS 67. What grade do you think this dime was assigned? Hopefully these ultra close ups make sense

Just Received My Monticello Nickel 2011 PF70 .

New Edge View Holder obscures the obverse on small coins. See Pic Just got my hands on a nice Jefferson Monticello Nickel 2011 and now my quest begins. The only thing I am not a fan of is the new ?Edge View Holders? on this coin. Because Jefferson?s head is right up to the edge of the coin the holder obscures some of the obverse of the coin. See Pic. Still I like the holder on other coins.
