Miserable Weather

But a wonderful day. Hi all, Yes, miserable weather here in SE Iowa. Really it sounds like miserable all weekend into Monday. However, I took a day of vacation today, so I could go down to the semi-annual coin show in Keokuk. And again, I had a wonderful time. After being able to sleep in on a Saturday morning (I work Tuesday thru Saturday), I did the normal morning chores, plus I had to do some usual errands (bank, post office etc.) So when I was finished, I drove down to Keokuk to the ma

RE: Points System

I agree in a way! I think you are dead on in a lot of respects but also think it is about the points for you as well. Many people collect the fodder because they can't afford the older gold coins you speak of that normally reach well above a thousand at least. I'll grant that many of the modern items are junk at best and that is why the majority of the modern stuff I have are bullion coins such as ASE's and Gold Buffalo coins neither of which will ever be worthless in any respect. For all of t

THE FOLLOWING JOURNAL IS FOR MUTURE AUDIANCES ONLY Greetings Society Members: looks like we are finally getting a taste of summer here in the northeast. Back to back days in the low eighties but with some rain not the best but ok. With more predicted for the weekend maybe I will be able to get my galleries up to date. A lot of Ho Hum journals of late. Old subjects rehashed points myself and others have brought up many times. Since the reigning Society Guru has jumped on the bandwagon it must b

TRUTH about the 1941-S WALKER

the "facts" used as an example are not even close to the truth. I have only once ever replied to a journal entry, I try and keep the spirit of what the journal was intended for--A place for us as collectors to share our experience ( joys, frustrations and memories--thank you DM Merrill, simply awesome journal as always). I'm going to straddle the line here by clarifying some really bad misinformation, share an opinion and also share my most recent exciting addition to my collection. First,

Points

Should not be assigned for at least 3-5 yrs. for any coin. Why should a coin freshly minted be assigned any point value until you have some idea of it's rarity AND relevance to the coin collecting hobby? Also there should be a system that shows the "total" population of every single coin, not just the NGC coins. If PCGS coins are allowed in the Registry Sets then I should be able to know how many of them exist for any given grade. Should the "rarity" of the coin be based on NGC totals, or shou

GRANDMA'S WALKERS

"Clown" Soda Syrup Bottles In The Back Of The Closet. My mind is beginning to function in some strange ways as I flirt with old age! A few days ago, I suddenly awoke from a sound sleep, with a vivid recall of a childhood experience. I was having a flashback to around 8 or 9 years of age- THE ICE CREAM TRUCK!!! I was transported back to when that truck, and it's bell brought every kid running from every nook and cranny throughout the neighborhood. The cherry bomb pop was my target of choic

Lots of Good Points

But what about Coin Collecting as a Competitive Sport? I have read all your interesting comments about this Points issue and just wanted to throw in some additional thoughts. For the most part the POINTS issue is only truly important for persons who are interested in both collecting coins and competing with their fellow collector for bragging rights. Some of us are ultra-competitive and some of us couldn't give a darned about the POINTS. Most of us probably fall somewhere in between. Wit

How I Use Points

It is just a part of my decision to buy or not. I use the points assigned to a coin and grade as a guide to rarity (I collect old coins mostly at this time). Along with populations graded by both NGC and PCGS, it helps me decide if what I am thinking of buying makes sense. It just a part of the collage of data I use. I will post a coin picture when I get home and have access to my images.

Point System AGAIN

What if the points were asigned by rarity???? Being a collector for over 50 years, NOT a dealer, I have come to appreciate what it takes to build a high grade set in ANY denomination. There will always be those few coins that make completing a set a challenge to locate and acquire at a "affordable" price. In most cases the "KEYS" are just that and most time NOT affordable but a must have to have the complete set. I like many think coin collecting can be an addiction because when you start gett

The Heart of the Matter

Investor, collector, or both? There is nothing like a robust conversation to get the juices going. One of the things I love about collecting coins is that there is no right or wrong coin to collect. There is only what the individual collector enjoys collecting. This effectually brings diversity and variety to our hobby. I am also heartened by the fact that the king?s hobby is no longer just the king?s hobby. Anyone of any financial means can collect coins. I still enjoy finding coins in circul

RE: Points System

I disagree with WKF, and here's why... Firstly, I would like to just say that I really love the Journals on NGC. I love reading them, I love hearing other people's opinions, and I am glad to be a part of this forum. However, that doesn't mean I have to agree with everything said or everyone posting here, even if they are my "elders". That being said, I'm offering below only a few counter-thoughts to those offered up by WKF in his post. ------------------------------------------ WHO IS A

The "Points System" needs to be Adjusted "BIG TIME"!

The way points are assessed on any given "Modern" issue coin is for the most part, just friggin ridiculous. These modern coin registry sets are far from what could EVER be considered rare, and don't even come close to the scrutiny of even being considered scarce. While I own quite a bit of these type coins & sets, I classify all of them, with just a few choice exceptions, nothing more than "modern day" garbage. But sadly they're many collectors that don't know that these coins they think so

Another Addition to My Custom Set

One small step closer to getting all my trademarked coins under one roof. I hope you enjoy, this is the obverse of a Japanese Trade Dollar. The Japanese Trade Dollar functioned in much the same way as the U.S. Trade Dollar in that it was meant to circulate in China and other parts of Asia where trade was desired. The Japanese fancied themselves a power in Asia and did not want the Brits, the Yanks, and the French getting too large a share of the valuable China trade. Seems like we are a

RE: This and That

Why or Why Not? I think the reason they don't specify what the defect is that caused the not genuine grade is that they don't want the counterfeiters to know what to correct next time. I do think the honest need to know so they can know what to look for, but how do the honest get the info without telling the crook also. Which company made the mistake here, PCGS or NGC, that is also important to know. It seems that one of them has a grading problem or possible integrity issue. Every coin I've s

This & That

what about some of this and a little of that Well my fellow collectors I can tell the weather has warmed up by the slowness of the board here (nothing wrong with that) so I thought I would share a fleeting thought I had this morning. I cannot remember who the poster was but they had submitted a couple of coins to NGC that came back as a non-genuine coin. They (the submitter) then sent them into PCGS and they came back with a MS grade ! Now I have yet to encounter a situation such as this

Nice Picture This is a nice picture of my PCGS MS66+ Double Die Obverse Lincoln Memorial that I recently added to my registry set. It is one of the better examples out there. The doubling effect really shows up nicely in this picture. I have been adding some top notch coins to this set recently which now has me in the #3 position for my 1958-Date Lincoln Memorial Set. My Day at the CSNS Coin Show in Chicago

My day at the Central States Numismatic Society nets two new coins for my collection and a whole lot of fun. It is a rare treat for me to attend a major coin show, so when the opportunity arises, I usually try to make the most of it. Since I live a little less than 3 hours? drive from Chicago, my latest opportunity presented itself a couple of weeks ago Friday at the annual Central States Numismatic Society coin show. With every show I attend, the experience of the previous show helps me to

I FEEL LUCKY

Even though the most valuable thing I have ever won is a set of KISS dolls from a company with a booth at the SD Comic Con. This past Friday, I received a large envelope from Heritage Auctions with a SURVEY. Yes, a survey where the top prize is $5000.00 and 2nd prize is a NGC MS63 St. Guadens Double Eagle of their choice. Those of you who follow this forum will recall that one of our esteemed members won a 1907 Double Eagle from Heritage by also completing a survey in 2010 (I believe). W

Great coins, great friends and a wonderful atmoshpere!

There all to be had in the NGC registry. Greetings all, it's been a little while since my last post. In the past week I've been to the local coin shop, conversed with friends from the Collector's Society and renewed my membership and the real reason for my post. I always dread renewals, a cash outlay that takes away from my coin budget - magazines, clubs, yes even Coin World. I almost ditched Coin World this year, but in the last minute pulled the trigger. Somehow though, I never seem to min

When You Really Feel You Know The Answer?

What makes one hesitate?? For me, it's the "fear of the unknown". Even when I feel very strongly I'm certain of something, I still tend to hesitate. In the past this has been both a blessing and a curse. More actually of the former rather of the latter. Greetings Collectors of Coins, Silver & Gold, There is always opportunity around for whoever has the appetite for the research and homework it requires to take advantage of the said opportunity. I've loved coin collecting forever, or so i
