IT IS BETTER TO HAVE BID AND LOST THAN TO HAVE NEVER BID AT ALL

You win some, you lose some, what more can I say Greetings Fellow Society Members: I have update the Galleries for my Peace dollar set, ?I?M AT PEACE TOO? and my short set of Merc?s ?Short Takes?. I have been very selective with these sets and they are made up of some very nice coins. I had a opportunity to get a great looking 1927P PCGS MS64+ Peace Dollar I placed what I thought was a very generous bid and was just waiting for the end of the auction to collect my new PRIZE, when my bid wa

Playing with photo composition

A new horse coin and presentation style...thoughts? Hello everyone, I picked up a very nice new coin for my horse-themed custom set. It is an example of the Austrian 5 shilling proof coin, with very nice cameo effect on both the obverse and the reverse. While browsing a registry set, I also ran across a style of picture composition that I found attractive, but I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. It's a beautiful presentation style, but I can't decide if it takes away from the focus o

A Diferent Type of Purchaseing

A weekend drive Friends, As most purchases are made online and we become friends with others on the farther side of the continent there are exceptions. I made a deal on a sweet Modern Commemorative set and the seller was only next door--(state). Of course there are mountains dividing the two states so there is a round-a-bout to get there. Well I think we are going to meet in the center somewhere and have lunch. Imagine that--- actually putting a face on a computerized coin friend. We talk and

Annual Coin Show 1892-S "Half Eagle"

Each year at our annual show I have been able to find a gold coin I could use, and for a price that was right. The raw example below fits the bill on both counts and I feel very fortunate to have acquired it, and to have paid as little as I did for it. Greetings Collectors, I was going through my raw coins to find at least 5 examples I could send in using my free coupon for the 5 free submissions. I think I have a pretty nice group to submit thus-far. I have picked 5 gold coins and several m

could be on to something here! I own a 1862-S no motto seated half dol. I have noticed that quite a few collectors do not have this coin, and I'm wondering why? My coin seems to be in good condition, and wondering what it is worth. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

COIN STORAGE BOXES #4

Wow what did I start here? Hey Buds, As we have been going on about the storage boxes I have always wanted a special Brief Case or something of the sort. Does anyone have a nice aluminum case or fire-proof that will hold 100 or more very special graded coins? If it does work well who sells it and how many graded coins will it hold and what are the measurements would help all of us with interest. I have some beauties that I hold ABOVE the rest and would like to house them accordingly. Late

NGC Franklins

Are all FBLs created equal? Based on my Franklin collection, I believe the answer is "No". NGC seems to be much more strict in granting FBL status that PCGS is. I have read journals from several other collectors (WKF for one) that seem to support this. I know my NGC FBLs seem to have stronger bel llines than most of my PCGS FBLs, and I believe several of my PCGS coins would not cross over to NGC with a FBL label. I decided to work on an all-NGC set of Franklins with the objective of comple

1913 Indian Head $2.50

Mom won it 40 years ago. Sent it to NGC today, it has been in a holder for the last 40 yrs. finally opened it the other day. Still had some luster and didn't show any signs of wear.I compared it to some pictures of some enlarged coins and it seemed like even the smallest of details were visible. I don't have any guess on the grade, if I luck out and get a "66", it's a $30,000 coin, there's only a pop of 1. I paid the $60 for the express service, Mom said she probaly didn't spend more than $5 o

Is there such a thing as being too picky?

Maybe I should increase my meds? ;-) So I have been putting together a top set of SMS Sacagawea $1 for about the past 7-8 months. I added the 2010-D SMS $1 to my collection graded as MS69 back in December of 2010. This particular coin doesn't have a lot of choice to pick from when it comes to population - there are 28 graded by NGC as MS69 and only 4 from PCGS. When the coin came in the mail, I was impressed with it's beauty, as I'm a big fan of the 2010 reverse design, and the reverse o

NGC 1963 PF 69 Red Ultra Cameo Lincoln Memorial

Working on my picture taking skills Hi everyone, I hope all of you are having a great weekend. Awhile back I posted a picture of a coin that I took with my cheap camera and some of the responses I received was that the coin was out of focus and not centered. So with much practice I think I finally have hit on the right combination. I also found that the coins that I have in the edge view holders seem to be easier to photograph. Anyways, here is a picture of my NGC 1963 Proof Red Ultra Came

Jefferson Dansco

Gettin' there... Because money is tight I've resorted back to the basics. I am in the process of completing my Jefferson Dansco. Not counting the MS versions of the 39 reverse 38 and 40, which I'm seeking in TPG MS64, I only have 14 MS coins to acquire, all from 38-51. From 60 forward they are mostly mint wrapper coins. I have a 38 proof that I just purchased and then from 53 forward I have every proof. All of the SMS coins are in hand. I'm hoping this will be an exclusively choice BU set

Ready for the weekend...

New pictures and preparing my first submission to NGC Today I took the day off of work, as I just returned from vacation yesterday and I wanted to enjoy the entire week off, not a one-day work week. It was nice having the day to relax, and I also organized some of my collection and updated some photographs. Many of you replied to my "eBay woes" post last week. That post was prompted by the search for my last coin for the SMS Sacagawea $1 set. I received the 2009-P SMS $1 graded MS69 yeste

Coin Storage Boxes Pt. 3

Whitman Boxes Hi All, I believe Six Mile Rick has a good idea with the coin storage boxes. I use the Whitman boxes as they can hold both PCGS and NGC slabs. I order from JP's Corner, they're located in Monroe City, Missouri. Their service is great, and their prices are reasonable. I also order the Air Tite coin holders from them. JP's carries all three boxes that has been discussed here. Their prices for the boxes are: NGC box $8.95, PCGS box $6.95 and the Whitman box is $7.95. I've placed

Sad day

Must let some go! Good Morning All, As many of my fellow collector's before me, I am now faced with the task of letting go of some parts of my collection. Medical bills are mounting. This is not a good time to sell off the "modern "junk" coins" as people have mentioned before. I have had quite a while acquiring these coins and getting the set to the point that it is, but times and plans change. I will be starting with about half of my Proof Roosevelt Dime collection. Currently ranked i

not exactly accurate Actually if you buy the boxes at Paradise Mint the are a tad over $9.00 each not $5.00 I have been purchasing the NGC storage boxes from NGC for awhile now. It is the best deal I have found anywhere. The one caveat is you have to order 10 minimum. So next time you need to get some storage boxes, do yourself a favor and save some money and give NGC a call. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Collectible Bear Market

Maybe it's not obvious, since the markets are up about double since the March 2009 bottom, but for most collectibles markets, we're in a SERIOUS bear market. Amidst all the hoopla and euphoria of rising gold and especially silver prices ... amidst the record sale prices for super-rare coins ... The REST of the collectible market is in a SERIOUS FUNK. Ask anyone trying to unload an MS67 or MS68 modern penny ... or a PF70UC any denomination ... there is NO DEMAND. The price floor is not bein

Tiny but beautiful

1864 German States 1/2 Groschen (Hannover) I added a nice little coin to my horse-themed set. I just bought it 2 days ago, and it came in the mail already today (a nice surprise). This coin features the Saxon Steed, which is a favorite heraldic motif of the Saxons. The Saxon Steed has very old origins, possibly as far back as the 5th Century AD. The image is common on the coinage of the Kingdom of Hannover, which existed from 1814-1866. The steed is even found on the flag of the Kingdom of

Proof Coinage of the mid 1950's

Many of you may already know this from the series of posts I wrote close to a year ago. It was a 4-part series & it had lots of interesting facts about this type coinage from this time period and why high grade proofs are so scarce in the period between 1950 through the 1960's. If this type coinage interests you in the least, it would definitely be worth your while to go back and read that series of posts. I myself learned a great deal just from writing it. Greetings Collectors, I did a

Is settling a form of quiting?

I tend to be pretty unbending when it comes to most things, but is it OK to change one's expectations for no good reason? I have been putting together a set of MS/SP69 Satin Lincolns for a few years now. I have a few MS68's in the set as placeholders, waiting on a good deal on their upper class men to show up on my radar (and my budget). There are three holes in the set, the 2010's and a 2009P Presidency. I am considering picking up the MS68's for these and calling the whole thing finished.

Silver / Gold

Sharp Drop Today, Where is it going Tomorrow? As I am new to this, I have caught the silver/gold bug very quickly! My very first silver coin was bought at my local coin shop with lots of misunderstandings and questions on what to buy and how much it cost? Through my self education and sheer desire to understand I have uncovered facts of history that used to be placed on worth of currency, not like todays Uncle Sams principle of "Believe me son....Its worth what I tell everybody its worth" ment
