new additions to a old set

Finally! a set started last year will get new faces. Friends, Sometimes we start sets intending to build them but get pulled to something else that is easier, less expensive, or faster. So the set just sits there month after month letting you know you have changed your sites. Well my proof silver eagles I purchased last year was a start that actually went nowhere as there were not many good offers for sale but other sets that surely fit the budget. I purchased a nice MS ASE set this year

B E W A R E again...

Want to hit a homer, go play for the Yankees Yup, got it again, the sumpthin' for nuttin' disease. Or we could call it, the "if its too good to be true, it probably is." I've been hit worse, but this comes awful close. I bought 14 Morgans back in May. Well, just got the results back from grading expedition to Sarasota. 7 of them were adulterated (<--sp?) or details. Seems people still like to clean their coins [when will the word get out NOT to clean them AT ALL? Leave that to the

FINALLY... Complete Set of Lincoln Wheats in Mint State (minus the 1922 No D strong Rev...)

Completing Lincoln Wheats in Mint State, a long road finished!!!! I've finally accomplished one goal, I was able to complete a Mint Set of Lincoln Wheats. What's funny about it is that the Key Dates were actually much easier to obtain, for a significant price, than some of the more common dates, specifically the 1920's San Francisco Mints. The last hold out I had was a 1926-S, which I happily over paid for on Heritage during the last Auction. I think I ended up paying about $340, which is a

100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins

The cat is out of the bag now. I noticed the registry set for the 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins about two weeks ago, and was quietly building my set all alone as the only registered set in the category. I already owned a few of the coins on the list, as they intrigued me, so it was fun starting with a few slots already knocked out. But two days ago, NGC announced the registry listing, and as I type this there are 17 sets, and I've been bumped from 1st to 7th place. No biggie, competition is

NGC MS68RD 1998D Lincoln Memorial

Getting closer ever day Hi everyone, here is a picture of my latest addition to my 1959-Present Lincoln Memorial Registry set. About 16 more to add to this set and some upgrades to some I already have in it. The coins are out there that I need but I am trying to be patient so as not to get carried away when the goal is in sight. I hope you enjoy my latest addition and as always, thanks for looking and Happy Collecting To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments

Coins are flooding in

Three more added to my herd Hello all, I don't want these journals to start sounding monotonous, but I wanted to share my three most recent beauties with those who have been following this set. It seems that all of my recent purchases are coming in the mail in waves. The three I am describing here are too many to post in one picture, so I will not post a picture here, but rather you can click on the "Discuss on Chat Boards" link as always and see the three horse coins. 1) 1950 Monaco P

RE: My 2011 Proof SAEs are not authentic

Great customer service from the U.S. Mint Hi everybody, Here is the follow up to the problem with my SAEs. I called the Mint customer service today and was expecting a BS answer like "return your coins and we will replace them" but that was far from the what happened. The lady I talked to apologized for THEIR error and was more then happy to send out 2 COAs. She was very pleasant and seemed genuinely concerned about my problem. The entire phone call lasted about 3 minutes. I was quite surpri

A rare coin

A pattern beauty with a mintage of 500 coins I have been scouring auction sites and the BAY for the past 3-4 months looking for the perfect example of the 1950 Monaco design for my horse-themed set. This design is absolutely beautiful, and features a highly detailed horse on rider on the reverse. In the process of researching this design, I learned a thing or two about the types of this coin available. A couple of the coins I found were listed as being "ESSAI" coins. This essentially boil

My 2011 Proof SAEs are not authentic!!

or maybe the U.S. Mint needs to do a better job on quality control! Hello collectors, I received my 3 proof SAEs today and to my surprise, 2 of them did not come with the Certificate of Authenticity. So I guess those 2 must of been farmed out to China for minting. Anyways, did anybody else come up a bit short with their SAE order from the Mint?...and if you did, what did you do to fix the problem? I will be giving customer service a call and see if anything can be done to fix this little

A couple new additions

The absolute stress of auctions and coming up with the bids (to win that is!!!) Good Evening All, I have not been looking around much for any dimes lately. I have several on layaway and need to complete prior commitments first! I have a Mr. Wantlist from Teletrade and they sent me the new listings and there were 2 dimes I wanted for my 46-64 set. They were a 54S and 60D both MS67FT. One was a blast white Gem and the other one had some toning on the obverse but clean on the reverse. I took

Good things come to those that wait...

But, OH how I hate to wait. In a recent post I lamented the fact that I lost a great coin at auction recently. Wouldn't you know it the seller, who is prolific at moderns, posted another. I placed the same bid, didn't learn from the first auction, and once again was sniped in the last 10 seconds of the auction for one bid increment of $2.50... The good news, you might ask. I received the beloved second chance offer for my original bid in the first two auctions. I happily hit the buy it now

wheat or any copper coins grading

clean or not clean not only it's hard too grade coins but more and more i have too deal with coins that are clean or altered. i think im goin to stop buying coins that are not graded, just look on EBAY and you see the number of wheat with no grade just with defination like improperly clean etc... so i have couple questions 1) how do you tell coins as been clean? any books in the matter? 2) do you think coins with just defination label should be accepted in any registry sets? 15 out of 16 vanish off my TeleTrade Tracking List

What are the odds of that? I had 16 Lincoln Memorials that I was tracking on TeleTrade tonight and before the auction is even 4 hours old, Poof, gone and vanish go 15 of them. I know they have the right to set reserves on coins and I have no problem with that, but "Wow" what are the odds of that? In the mean time, here is a picture of a nice NGC PF69RDUC 1963 Lincoln I added recently to my registry sets. Time to go out back and enjoy the lake. As always, thanks for looking and Happy Collecti

July 10, 2011 Getting Used to NGS

Another thing to figure out! I am sure I will get the hang of it. I am currently doing my best to add a coin to my registry. I guess that's what you call it....or maybe it is my collection. Anyway, I am trying to add a coin to something. There were 2 other coins in there that I added another day, but I somehow I managed to wipe them out. Back to the beginning. Now I have one coin again. I am very happy I have it entered. Maybe I won't lose it!

Double Eagle Intrigue

And well worth the read. I was recently reminded of a wonderful book in my Numismatic Library when I read a recent article about the start of the trial to determine the ownership of Ten 1933 Double Eagles held by the family of Israel Switt. Author Alison Frankel turns the saga of the legendary 1933 Double Eagle into a fascinating walk through history. Shady Mint employees, The Secret Service, The FBI, a Secretive Precious Metals dealer (Mr. Switt), King Farouk, and a British Coin Dealer are

Crossroads

I reached a point where a decision must be made. Hello fellow collectors. Today I was wondering what I should do with my coin collection. I will be moving from Ft Campbell, Kentucky to Ft Huachuca, Arizonia next month. My problem is I have too many coins to move. I wont let the Army move my collection so that means I have to move it myself. I was wondering what I should keep and what I should attempt to sell. First I was thinking about selling all my Presidential Dollar rolls (HSN ones that

1954 Toned Quarter I know it's not a particularly rare quarter, and the grade is not hard to find, but something about this little coin just drew me in. Firstly, I had recently read the very interesting full thread on the Chat Boards regarding the history of the different types of NGC Slabs and labels. So, I knew this coin had a slab that was very short lived and was wildly unpopular, likely because of the microscopic registration number moved to the bottom of the label. Secondly, I don

Five New Coins That Didn?t Kill the Budget

Buying coins when the money isn?t there. I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend. Around here the 4th of July means getting everything ready for our big BBQ bash. While my wife is making the potato and macaroni salads and doing the perquisite pie backing, I?m out cutting the grass and cleaning up the yard, making sure the pool is up to snuff and making sure there is an ample supply of charcoal for the grill and smokers. Fortunately, it also means everyone sleeps late in the mornings so

A Seismic Shift

There are major changes coming to my collection signified by the latest addition to my Morgan Dollar registry set. Greetings everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July. With lots of fireworks, major changes are coming to my coin collection. The first change is that I am discontinuing buying coins for my First Spouse registry set. The high cost of gold and other interests, mainly Morgan Dollars, are forcing me to choose between whether to continue with the First Spouse series or pursu

A Pleasant Surprise

Another lovely little lady will soon be mine. The current Heritage auction has, as usual, a number of coins that fit my collecting goals and, more or less, my budget. A few Capped Bust half dimes and a few Seated Liberty half dimes topped the list. Early on, I made the decision to focus on a colorful piece dated 1869 that's in an NGC MS67 slab. I did my usual price guide and auction result investigations, decided on a maximum bid that fits in the budget, and entered it. Because that date i

Long waiting....need to be patient

It is a long journey for coin submition outside US. First it take about 2 weeks to get the coin shipped to NGC/NCS from my country (The bottleneck is US custom, some time it will hold the package for 1 week). Secondly, it is ngc/ncs itself. it take 1-2 days for my order to show up. But unfortunately, this time, the number of coin shown in the web site is not correctly (which is less than the number of coin i submitted). Already drop them a message about this, hope they will soon correct it.
