Catalog Description Oversight?

Do your homework... In my last journal entry, I wrote about the two half dimes I'll soon be receiving from the latest Heritage auction. This entry is about the catalog descriptions for one of them, the 1848 Medium Date in an NGC MS66 slab. In the past, I've written about auction experiences and have encouraged readers to attend live auctions. I've also written about my pre-auction preparations. One thing I haven't written much about is the catalog descriptions (other than to praise Bob Grell

Jefferson Nickels 1938-Date

Trying to fill the Littleton Coin Nickel Albums (Volume 1 1938-1975; Volume 2 1976-2006; Volume 3 2007-Date). While I am working on collecting my Lincoln Memorial cent collection, I decided to also work on my nickel collection. My goal right now is to obtain one coin of each mint for each year. After going thru all of my change at the house and a couple rolls from the bank, I ended up finding a lot of the D and P coins for the collection. Checklist: http://www.jeremyabbott.com/attachments/

A pause and a break from the world of coins

Tonight 52 years flashed before my eyes. Greetings once again all; I wanted to stray off the main course here and take a moment to reflect. I was fortunate tonight to view the ISS (International Space Station) fly overhead not once but twice. As I watched with the amazement at the first sighting tonight I thought back to my childhood when I was 7 and together our family and neighbors stood outside and watched with utter disbelieve as we viewed flying over our heads the Russian satellite

morgan dollar set

new goal in my quest to finish this set I picked this coin up recently and when i did i decided to focus on the Morgans as separate date sets, each set being a different Mint. I am doing this because 1. I already started the sets as a date set, only buying Philly mints, and 2. it will help keep me focused rather than scattered all around. I fully accept that i will never own the 1895 Pf, but I am most worried about the 1894 P. It will take some patience and i may have to put a hold on buying

SUSAN B. ANTHONY'S UPDATE

1980-P MS68 Just bought this coin at a really, really good price, hopefully I can add it to my son's set by next weekend. It should move the set up to #3, if I can get one more upgrade I won't have the overall #1, but I will have the #1 NGC only set!! That was my only goal. Good luck in your collecting adventured. New Coins ? New Collecting Goals

Success is an awesome feeling! Pay day is just about 2 weeks away and that means it?s time to look back at how I did and look forward to what I want to accomplish in my 2011-2012 collecting year. The numbers surprised me this year. I spent less and got more than I had anticipated. With five coins still in the mail and an expected arrival some time this week, my total points will be well over 26,000. I?m really proud of this number because there are no duplicated sets and thus it is not inflate

Numismatic Shopping

I found a new source this morning. I was surfing around the internet this morning and I decided to go to Coin World's website. In looking around there, I found that they have a market place. I was very excited about this. It does not have the same volume of merchandise that ebay has, but it did have a lot of variety and I feel safer buying non graded merchandise from there. Does anyone out there have other options for safe buying? Also, coin day was yesterday for a lot of us with direct

Hockey Stick Valuation

?Hockey Stick Valuation? is a trend where a coin steadily increases in value through its grades before reaching a point at which its cost skyrockets. This abrupt and sharp increase in price resembles a ?Hockey Stick? when it is plotted on a graph. There are numerous numbers of coins that display a hockey stick rise in valuation. Among the common date Morgan Dollars, this typically occurs when a coin moves from MS-65 to 66 or MS-66 to 67. Population reports can be a good indicator as to which s

Cut Bids Win!

Yes, I'm still spending a lot on silver... I picked up two half dimes in Heritage's Thursday afternoon auction session. This silver addiction may be getting worse. After the two or three weeks of pre-sale absentee bidding, only one coin that fits my primary collecting goal was still at what I thought was an acceptably low bid level for me to consider pursuing. One other coin of interest, but one that might be considered a duplicate, also still seemed accessible. Coming up on three years a

2011 Eagle arrived and now on my way to collecting all ASE Anniversary coins

ASE SF should it be added to the ASE West Point coins in a collections of Anniversary PF & MS ASE? Yesterday I received my PF 70 2011 25th Anniversary American Silver Eagle and my collection is almost done. I have 1986 PF 69 and MS 69 First Year Issue ASE green label, a 2006 ASE PF 70 20th Anniversary, a 2011 ASE PCGS ER PF MS 70 25th Anniversary. To complete my set I am looking for 2006 ASE MS 70. When the Mint releases the ASE MS SF in September I will be sending them off hoping for a

NGC STRIKES AGAIN!

NGC Help me! (and Jerica did!) Good Day All, There has been a little trash talk (journal entries) lately about NGC. I am not one of those people doing that. I have been having many issues with trying to load new coins over the past week. I went to add a 2011D Roosevelt dime in one of my sets and it said coin was invalid for slot. I already had it listed in 1 set so why wouldn't it go in this set? I tried again thinking I had made an error. Still no luck. After being in contact with Jeric

AT or NT? what do you guys think? AT or NT? i picked this up today. Coin shop near me, guy picked up a whole bunch of GEM ASE's different dates. This one stood out the most. I really liked the colors and i do NOT normally buy toned coins due to the fact that i cannot tell the difference between NT or AT all that well, so i could use some of your opinions. thanks Nick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Oh Learned Colleagues

Splain Somefin To Me Friends, I know some of you are very experienced in the ways of NGC and can provide a logical explanation for the following. I received a Silver Jefferson Nickel back from NGC graded UNC Details due to a PLANCHET FLAW on the reverse. Now, I can understand and support a Details grade for a coin that has been doctored in some way, even if the Doctoring occurred long before the current owner held the coin. After all, a doctored coin will presumably appear nicer than it sho

A Minor Addition

with apologies to the Moondoggy. Hi all, Moondoggy posted a spectacular coin but I am merely posting a rather ordinary coin that I had hoped would be an AU55. Well, she came today and she was only XF40 but what the hey, she still looks nice. Now I only have 17 coins in the NGC pipeline. Looks like September will be a good month. . A Major Addition

Keep swinging for the fence ..... Greetings once again all; Today I am proud to add a major addition to my Franklin collection. I started this collection with the dedication of ONLY buying raw coins and submitting them for grading. Along the way I have conversed with a few here about the Franklins and researched various avenues. I was fortunate to "win" an on-line auction the first part of July for a 1951 Franklin Proof I really thought could be "special". Until you actually get i

1st naturally toned 5oz yellowstone.. A must see

I still cant believe my eyes In a recent journal, I explained how to turn a gun safe in coin safe. With over 500 certified coins , junk silver rounds, Toned silver coins, and Solid oak shelves and copper pennies. I really dont know how it happened. I originally bought a bullion version of the 5 oz America The Beautiful when it first came out. I put the on the top shelf inside my safe and closed it up. I opened my safe periodocially to put coins I won from an auction in my NGC boxes and Closed

The Big Switch

My task of changing my collection from ungraded to graded coins... July 2011 - I start by selling the 8 raw silver eagles I had purchased in 2004, an extra NGC graded eagle, 2x 2005 Silver Proof Sets and one raw gold $5 eagle. Using the funds from these sales, I begin to fill in the gaps in my Silver Eagle collection, and start the process of adding graded coins across the board. My first task is to get all the Presidential and Sacagawea Dollars, which I have almost accomplished. I also have g

My first NCS submission results...

Perhaps my grading skills are improving. One month almost to the day after journaling about sending in my first submission my 2 little Roosie's are ready to come home! Either my grading skills are improving or as the saying goes - "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then". The 1971-P Roosevelt did come back as cleaned - "Reverse Wheel Marks" - I didn't key on the wheel marks, but rather on some very light circular abrasions in the field - almost undiscernable. Too bad as this coin i
