A Nice Surprise from the Graders

Franklin and I come out smelling like roses. Just got the pictures for 10 coins that have successfully navigated the grading process. One oe my submissions was a 1964-D Roosevelt Dime that came back with a very nice MS67 grade. THe coin does have a lot of flow lines but otherwise looked very pristine under magnification. I figured it might garner a better than average grade and I was right for a change. Yay!!! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be

2011 P ATB 5 oz Silver Coins

US Mint changes I just noticed that the US Mint now will allow up to 5 ATB's from the same address instead of only one. Like that stopped dealers from ordering more than the limit. And now the US Mint is going to mint 35,000 per coin but will still charge $279 each. Hopefully they will start producing better quality... Happy opening NFL season! 9-11-01 The Day The World Changed Forever

Do You Remember Where You Were Hi everyone. As we all know the 10th anniversary of the day that changed the world for all of us will be commemorated this Sunday. I was in traffic that day heading too the Veterans Hospital here in Tampa when our local DJ at that time (Bubba The Love Sponge) announced that a plane had hit the first of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center. Shortly thereafter they announced that another plane had hit the second Twin Tower and a plane also hit the Pentagon

Received My Second ATB Mount Hood and there are marks on the Reverse. @#$%!

I can not believe it has happened again... I can not win with the Mint. This is the second coin with damage. The first was on the obverse side of the coin a small nick on the rim not noticeable if I was just showing the reverse side but not good for grading. Now I receive the second ATB Mount Hood coin it is worst than the first one. Now the marks are on the reverse side and are very noticeable. Displaying this coin I won?t. Now I have a choice to make. Send back the coin, since I have two now

Silver Eagle proofs

a fun day loading a set Friends, I returned home after a month of working out of state last night. This morning after a cup of coffee I had the great task of loading and cataloging a set I purchased before I left. I had purchased a set of proof eagles from TPETERS but they were recieved after I left to work in Ohio. The set is very nice and missing only one coin----the 1995-W. I'll be keeping a eye out for one but it may take some time to acquire one. It is a great set to add to but I wi

US Mint Release the limit on the Mount Hood 5 Ounce ATB coin..my damage ATB is going back.

Now I can return the coin. US Mint Release the limit on the Mount Hood 5 Ounce ATB coin I previously wrote about the American The Beautiful Mount Hood 5 ounce coin that I received from the US Mint that had edge damage. And I was pondering if I should return it and take the chance of a sell out. Well the Mint released the household limite on the ATB coin and I now have one on its way to me. I will send back the damage one and hope the one I will receive tomorrow will have no damage on it. Her

One More For The Road For over twelve years I have been working on a set of New Orleans half eagles, a 16 coin set, with about 6 difficult to locate coins within the set. Most of the coins fall with the EF-40 to AU-50 range. Today I posted coin 15, a 1855 0 PCGS 50. That leaves one coin left. I now need to rebuild my coin account, so number 16 will have to await a while before the hunt resumes. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

first piece to the new set

1899 S Morgan I started my new San Fran, Morgan Date set. I really want to try and make it an XF and up set. I may have to give a little on that goal with the '93. This is my first addition, besides the '84 which i bought a long time ago on a fluke for XF money. i bought it for $18 under FMV so im off to a good start... A couple dings around cheek and nose, but i think, a solid piece. Exactly what i was looking for. 1899 S To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here

Why I collect

Teaser I've been asked a lot recently why I collect coins. I never really thought about why I collect; I usually give the typical answer of its fun and I think they're neat.

A Bid Finally Held Up for the Win

after 2 straight times of being sniped........ At 2 of the most recent big auctions I have gotten painfully sniped. In one of them, there was a gorgeous 1934-D for my mid-date Walker set. The coin had beautiful, distinctive toning and a full strike of the head area of Ms Liberty. For those familiar with the Walker series, you'll know how flat the 34-D head strike is and how prized a nice strike is. Well I had the high bid for a whole month prior to the sale. The night before the sale I even bu

NGC MS69RD 1992 Lincoln Memorial Population of 6

Thanks datentype Hi everyone. I just added this very nice example of a NGC MS69RD 1992 Lincoln Memorial to my registry sets. I did have a MS68 in this slot until I was fortunate to pick up this beauty. I would like to thank datentype for having some of the most outstanding coins on Ebay for sale at reasonable prices. This coin has a NGC population of 6 with none graded higher. The overall strike and characteristics on this coin are outstanding with beautiful red copper coloring. I will b

Letter To My Children

How to approach the inheritance issue....head on ! To Jason, Justin and Jennifer,   When I first learned that I would be a grandfather, my outlook on life was gradually transformed. I began to wonder what kind of "legacy" I might leave behind for you and our grandchildren. This letter is an attempt to document and explain the reasoning behind my decision. As you know, my own father will leave me a sizeable financial windfall, which I hope to use and nurture so that we might live our lives

Another Example of You Got To Be @%^#*@! Kidding Me

Research and Knowledge are powerful tools Hi everyone. For those of you who follow my journals you know that I am mostly working on my Lincoln Registry sets especially my 1959-Present business strike set. Recently I added a 1985 MS69 Red Lincoln to my set. This coin has a NGC population of 6 with none graded higher. I was on Ebay last night going through the certified Lincolns that were for sell when I came across listing number 320564895317 which is for a 1985 MS68 Red Lincoln with a buy

Completed my first proof set

with the 2011 Sacagawea Wampanoag Treaty dollar Howdy Friends, I recently acquired the 2011 Sacagawea Wampanoag Treaty dollar to complete my grandson?s birth proof set and found an ancestor connected to the events dedicated in the coin in my family tree. The story I heard growing up was that Kamehameha the Great & FDR were in our family tree and being of Hawaiian descent I always thought the chances were slim to none that FDR was actually in our tree. First Coin Submission

Very Impatient. I upgraded my membership, received my coupon for 5 free gradings and sent in some coins. I sent in a San Francisco Mint Commem., Jamestown Commem., and three Franklin Halves. I think all should come back with decent grades, but I was more interested in the process. So, right now, my status is submitted for grading. From those of you with more experience, the more you check the status, the faster it goes, right? Just kidding. I have read people's journals talking abo

To crack out or not?

If you crack out a coin, will it grade higher at another grading company!? This is what I am thinking.... Over the last 15 years I have been buying my pennies in slabs and trying to collect the best coins, regardless of the grade stated on the label for my Lincoln Cent Collection. So looking at some of my extra's, I found I have 6 2001-D PCGS MS-68 cents. So I think if I crack out one of the better ones, will NGC give it a MS-69? Tell me what you think? I think I have a better than av
