Becalmed At Sea

Very little to show for the month I have felt like a ship at sea in irons during the month of September. Still reeling from the financial storms of the summer, disposable income for coins has been scarce to say the least. Throw on top of that there have been relatively few very good deals on coins out there lately so ultimately my September acquisitions were almost nonexistent. Even the circulated rolls I?ve gone through have yielded only minimal hidden treasures. But all is not lost as I di

Just added a birthdate coin to my collection.

Life is grand when you find a coin. You know how some people walk down the street and see a penny on the ground and just walk over it. I pick the up to see if they are worth my efforts. Well while surfing eBay I came across a penny that had a date close to my heart. Love finding coins that were minted the year I was born. A history lesson

Who knew collecting coins would be so informative!! Last weekend I placed a bid on a coin, and didn't think about it again until I found the email in my box that I had won it. It was a coin that I hadn't really seen before, but fit my horse-themed set. I did some research before placing a bid, and I knew I probably wouldn't find another one for a while as it was only a two year type coin, from 1741 and 1742. Nonetheless, it came in the mail today, and you can read a great deal of detail abo

First submission

Finally became an NGC member! I've been casually collecting gold and silver coins for years but just recently started adding graded coins to my collection via some online auction purchases. This prompted me to purchase a premium membership and utilize the 5 free submissions on some of my current coins. My order has been received and now I am anxiously awaiting the results. Below are the coins I submitted. I will post the results once I get them so we can see how I did for my first time! (

The 2 latest additions will add another 239 points to my registry sets. Now for the good part. My favorite Ebay seller, yes GOTJACOLLECTIBLES, has these 2 coins for sale. The 60D Large Date he is asking $3995.00 and I paid $240.00 which is about $700.00 below NumisMedia Pr

History Tab...

How the heck did I miss this feature for the last several months?!?!? Anybody else not notice the History tab, when you open up your set listing? I've often thought about this and wondered where I was a couple months ago, last year, etc., but all that history was lost once a change was made. Now our sets have a tab that shows the ins and outs and slot score corrections. Cool. Maybe I completely missed this when it happened, if so sorry for the redundancy. Todd To see old comments for t

US Mint Suspends Sale of Proof & MS Silver Eagles

The Mint reinstated sales on 10/5/11 cutting about $10 Off on each, the 2011-W Burnished MS & 2011-W Proof Eagles. A Miracle! (So Just read this Journal for background info only) The 9/29/2011 article in "SilverCoinsToday" indicates that the Mint has suspended their sale of silver products, due to the drop in the spot silver market, stating "This product is temporarily unavailable for product repricing", suggesting that the Mint is going to readjust their prices to reflect the lower silver

Plain Edged Presidential Dollars

Some Interesting Research Folks, I ran across a very interesting article from Coin World about Mint Police Officer theft of edgeless Presidential Dollar: http://www.coinworld.com/articles/where-are-all-of-the-plain-edge-presidential-/?utm_source=OB_traffic The article analyzes the current numbers of coins certified by NGC, PCGS, and ANACS while also attempting to discern how many were stolen and when? A Quick Entry

to show off my 1878CC Morgan I have to take a few minutes tonight to show my 1878CC Mogran Dollar. I won it in a Teletrade auction early last week and just received it yesterday. I cleared off my camera tables so I could take pics. It's only XF45 but I love it. And while I will probably upgrade to hopefully a gem, I feel I can't have too many CC coins. Attaching a pic of the obverse. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

The results are in.....

50/50 I got an email from NGC yesterday saying that my coins had shipped. I went to the website to see how they did. It was so so. San Francisco Old Mint - PF70 UC Jamestown - PF70 UC Not too bad! 1963 D Franklin Half - MS63 1961 Franklin Half - PF65 1949 D Franklin Half - Unc Dtl - Improperly cleaned. It was an interesting experience. Not quite what I was hoping for, but I will just have to be a little more picky with what I send next time. Happy collecting everyone. Marc

A Nice Ebay Bargain

For a collector of small means... I picked up a MS66 1945-S Jefferson Nickel this weekend from a dealer on EBAY. The NGC Price Guide value is $32.50, His BIN price was $25.00, and my "Make An Offer" offer was $20.00. I thought he would split the difference and make a counteroffer of $23.00 but lo and behold, he took the offer and I now have the coin pictured below speeding to my home postage free. This is a pretty typical way I operate on EBAY. I always have a number of saved searches going

The 2011 (W) NO Mint-Mark Silver Eagle

Is This Really A New Issue, and will there also be a "2011(P)Struck in Philadelphia" Label as well(I hope so)? I know that the US Mint issues silver bullion version coins from most of the Mints throughout the year, not bearing any mintmark. This year, the collectors market has been infused with a few variations that includes the (S)-Label, and the 25th Anniversary Label-which so far has not been officially issued by the Mint itself. I saw this coin below for sale on Ebay today. it was also p

Are turnaround times ever real?

When is an estimate accurate? I've been with NGC for a couple of years and am wondering if I just have bad luck or are tohers finding the same thing - I never get a coin in the listed turnaround time. I have submitted coin US, world & ancients, I have sumitted medals and tokens, I used to submit a lot of errors, but nonr ever came or even was moved from scheduled for grading in the actual turnaound times listed (which are always longer than the 'regular' times). When I get my 'free' submis

Ode to BeawChan

I was inspired by the commems post and started a set... Here we go again - not completed on anything and starting a new set. BeawChan's post with the great picture of one of my favorite coins, the Connecticut Commem. Inspired, I put out a 70% FMV bid on a nicely toned Washington & Carver half in NGC MS 65 and walked away, actually went out of town for a couple days. Came back to find that I had one for 65% of FMV!! Sweet!!! These are great coins, but a slow set to compile - I think MS 65

Turnaround Times

Modern Tier In response to S. Trzebiatowski, I have had some luck keeping the turn around times on time. It has been my experience that the lower modern tier is on par with times. It is when people flood the upper tiers with special label requests and Early Release Labels that clog the upper tiers and extending their process times. If you can live with a graded coin with a normal non-specialized label, I recommend the modern tier or basic tier fitting your coins specific need for age and dolla
