Playing with the Dino-Lite

Some Pros & Cons I've been playing just a little with the Dino-Lite digital microscope I got at the Pittsburgh ANA show last week. Once the software is installed and running, you just plug it in to your computer's USB port and you see what it's looking at. The basics of operation are easy enough, but it'll be awhile before I have a satisfying setup. I still need to get a good natural spectrum light. Beyond that, it's clear that I'll have to play with the software adjustments or deal with

Just received my Gettyburg National Military Park American The Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncalculated Coin

To open or not. I was debating to or not to open the PBGS shipping box. To send the coin off for grading without looking at it was not at the top of my list for me. I can do without and ER label. When I open the box and looked at the coin...just one word. WOW! I wasn't going to buy this coin but when the price dropped to $229.99 I could not resist and I am glad I did. It is a beautiful coin. Found a Buffalo During my Family Vacation

But it was not of the numismatic type. My family and I just returned from a wonderful four days on the island of Santa Catalina. As many of you may know, the island has a population of American Bison (Buffaloes) that date back to the filming of a movie called the "Vanishing Americans" based on a Zane Grey novel from 1925. Anyway, much of the filming of the movie was done in the "outback" of Santa Catalina Island due to its rugged terrain that mimicked the American west. 14 Bison were brough

Gary?s October Coin of the Month

My October ?Coin of the Month? is a 1988 Vatican City 50 Lire coin commemorating the ?Creation of Eve.? This month?s coin of the month comes by the way of ?The BRG Collection? and it is because of his E-Bay listing tip and recommendation that I currently own this coin. One of many things I like about ?Collectors Society? is when any one of its members spots a coin that may fit in another member?s collection that they will often notify that member of the buying opportunity. I have done this in

Arab Spring

In this European Winter, let's not forget the green shoots of democracy on Africa's North Coast. Maybe some Arab world dictatorships had reached tipping points. Maybe regime change was imminent. Or maybe it really takes one act of courage by one person. We Westerners are scared of sovereign debt defaults, unemployment, double-dip recessions ... When we're out of work, we skip a gas payment, run up credit cards, and get fat on cheap, low-nutrition, high-calorie food. But the people of Nor

Pittsburgh ANA - Friday

My four cents? Having won the 1888 nickel three cent piece and having entered a leading bid on an 1855 gold dollar Thursday evening, my options for Friday were limited. When I woke up, I checked the bids. I had been outbid on the dollar. So I decided to go to the convention center to pick up the 3CN and buy a Dino-Lite microscope, get a little more flavor of Pittsburgh, and go home. At lot pick up, I was careful to ask first if sales tax would be charged. For the coin I got, sales tax would

both sets and photos. I'm slowly and surely starting to update my sets and photos. I've cut out several comepetitive sets, most notably the full Buffalo Nickel set and Indian Head Cent set because I can't see myself finishing them (due to cash constraints). However, both coins will be featured either in a short set or one per year set and in some of my custom sets. My custom sets, I'm starting with New Orleans silver, will cover a wide range of silver and gold coins. However, I can safely sa

Pittsburgh ANA - Thursday

My Three Cents As I mentioned last time, I was planning to go to the ANA's National Money Show in Pittsburgh. So my wife and I got up early Thursday morning for the three and a half hour drive. The first order of business was to find a parking space. The Convention Center lot was full. We ended up hoofing it from several blocks up-river (the Allegheny). Once inside, there were two tasks: auction lot viewing and scanning the bourse. There were several coins of interest in the Heritage aucti

Roots

How I got started I hear people talking about the "Silver Finds" days in the mid '60s after the mint changed the composition of coins. I also hear people talk about how they filled their Whitman Lincoln Cent albums. Fun times, I'm sure. For me, it started in 2004 with the release of the quarter for the great state of Texas, my home state. Then, I fell in love with the Florida quarter. Later, the Wisconsin quarter came out with its extra leaves. I later found a nice, helpful coin dealer

Thinning Out My Collection

Hoping they find a good home! Hi everybody, I just want to drop a little note and let everyone know that I am selling my Mordern Commemorative 50c collection and narrowing my attention down to SAEs and Modern Commemorative Silver Dollars. I haven't been too excited about these coins lately and money I have put aside for upgrading the 50c always seem to be used for SAEs and $1 comms. The set is complete including the 1996 Proof Olympic Soccer that doesn't show a coin...it's a PF-69UC. Th

obverse photo Here's the other obverse picture. I also want to comment about the size of pics we can put in our journal's. I have the feeling the size has been increased by NGC, as I don't have to compress my pictures with the email choice in Picture Manager. Would this perception be correct? 2 Oz Kookaburra collection DONE ! 100% 10 years to complete

Are there anymore out there? Finally after 10 years, a trip to Australia, constant updates to NGC for slot corrections, I have completed my Registry set of 2 Oz Kookaburras. I only need one more to finish my complete set of 1 oz Kooks and varities, the 1999 Kook with Portugal Privy. Never thought I was going to find them all. What next? Some of these I didn't even know existed, like the Victoria Cross Privy Mark, until I stumbled across them in my search. To see old comments for this Jour

25th Anniversary Eagle Set, It's Official

Thursday, October 27th 12-Noon. Get your money ready . . They're gonna disappear FAST! No Official pricing has been posted. For myself, I'd use an average of the current silver eagle prices-Plus 30%. That puts us in the $320-350 ballpark. If they come out for less, Good Deal! Anyway, Not taking any credit for the news, these links will take you to the full story-> SilverCoinsToday: http://www.silvercoinstoday.com/release-date-published-for-2011-anniversary-silver-eagle-set/105013/

Stolen Coins From Mint

Interesting dilemma for the mint. I was reading about this mint officer who stole edgeless dollar coins from the mint and it makes me wonder if the mint plans to pursue the return of these coins. After the Langbord '33 Double Eagles case, the attorney for the government said that they wanted to set the precedent that if it was stolen from the mint, it will be pursued. Since the coins were sold to a dealer who in turn probably had them certified, there is a record. The catch 22 is that if

Latest addition just arrived today

addition my MS66 Mercury dime set Howdy friend, Received this little gem in the mail today, it?s the latest addition to my MS66 WWII Liberty Head ?Mercury? Dime Set. I love these little coins and I?ve been putting a modest MS66 set together. I?ve been able to make off with one MS67 and two MS66FB examples and stayed under $28 on average paying a high of $39 and a low of $4. Most are toned to some degree like the 1945S I just received today that has some nice blue toning on Liberty?s head. A

Another Six step nickel I have been lucky enough to find a six step 1987 P nickel and came back MS67 from NGC. Now I am lucky again with a 1971 P nickel MS66 six steps from NGC. Only 3 at this grade and only one higher!! I am not always correct with the grade at times but I am getting the hang of full steps. Everyone enjoy the MLB playoffs...Go Brewers! I've dropped in the rankings

I guess they can change it anytime they want. I was the one who proposed a new (seperate) registry set for the 2009 cents and the new sheild cents. I was the first one to get my 2009 perfect PF70RD Ultra Cameo cents entered into this new set with photos & descriptions and I was under the impression that I would remain at the top of this pile until I change something. Last week, even tho I haven't changed a thing, I fell into the second slot (still tied for #1), and now I've fallen into t

Holy ?Ikes? Batman!

A large sum of E-Bay Bucks leads to a dilemma and windfall of Eisenhower Dollars. Greetings all, because of several large purchases on E-bay last quarter I amassed $242.37 in E-Bay Bucks. For more than a month, I planned to purchase a MS-68 1976-S Eisenhower Dollar to upgrade a MS-67. I had coins from two different sellers on my watch list and both were ?Buy it Now? listings. One coin listed for $439.00 and the other for $475. Originally, my hope was to subsidize the cost of an upgrade with E-
