A new undertaking

A lot more work than I thought... About 2 weeks ago, I started thinking about creating a website to display some of my raw (ungraded) horse-themed coins. I've amassed quite a few, and I don't think I will be able to get them all graded in the near future. However, I still wanted to be able to show them off and also keep an online index of which coins I have acquired and which ones I may still be missing. Well, after a lot of investigation, and deciding to err on the side of "simplistic" in

Medal of Honor

Dakota Meyer What do you guys think of having a PF70 Medal of Honor coin signed by a real Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Meyer lives just a few miles from me, I'm sure he would be more then willing to sign the slab for me. And ideals on what to use to sign it with, so it would smear or fade over the years? Just saying how cool this would be to have a Medal of Honor coin signed by a Medal of Honor recipient, being he is the first living Marine recipient since the Vietnam War. To see old c

Picked up a1992-P Lincoln Cent NGC MS 69 RD population 6 at 69 Ultimate Lincoln or not?

Is it an Ultimate Lincoln as described in the auction I won? Just received in the mail my 1992-P Lincoln Cent NGC MS 69 RD. The coin to the necked eye looks like a 70 but I need a better glass to view it, one coming in the mail soon. Anyway, I picked up this coin for $180.00 and I did not tell my wife how much I paid for it. I believe I got a good deal on it. NGC list it in the coin price guide at $630.00 at a total grade 69 at 6. Since I am new to collecting, any of you seasoned coin veteran?

1323 Points Vaults Me to Near 30,000 Total Points

Sometimes is just better to rely on dumb luck! Okay, so as a rule I do not pay too particularly much attention to points. This is especially true for my $5.00 Dimes for Kids set. I?m looking to add any circulation strike dime I can add to the set for $5.00 or under. And that was certainly the case with a dime I picked up this week. Usually, I am very pleased to pick up an MS65 or MS66 Roosevelt Dime for $5.00 or under to add to the set or add to the extras so I can give it away to a kid with a

Heavily Chopped!

But still brimming with character and history. My final group of NGC coins are now on the way and I received the images today. This takes my Trade Dollar custom set to 20 coins with only my PCGS bound chopmarked US Trade Dollar to complete the set. Hopefully she'll return to the fold in November. As you can see in the picture this 1900 French Indochina Piastre De Commerce is heavily chopped and has obviously had an interesting life. I obtained her sometime in the 1980's. Please enjoy Lat

Money spent is more then worth?

Why spend money having your coin graded when it costs more then the coin is worth? I may be missing something but I don't know why we are spending money having coins graded, when according to the red book the coins are only worth half of what is being spent. Can someone enlighten me on this thought? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

New Coin Collector

This is in response to my 99 year old aunt who left me a lot of old coins. I want to thank everyone who has responded with very helpful information. I will go and buy the RedBook for coin collection. I live in Marietta, GA and have looked up several shops that buy or sale coins but as you all suggested I should speak with someone I trust. I do not know whom to trust with what I have so any feedback on this would be appreciated. I want to know what I have but have not really thought of selling

New to Coins

My 99 year old Great Aunt gave me a large drum filled with old coins. I have not been able to separate them all yet but am impressed with what I've come across so far. Aunt Inez will turn 100 on March 6, 2012 and she just gave me a lot of coins. A lot of the coins date back to 1864. I am trying to see what I have but not sure how to go about finding the information I need to understand just what she has given me. Can anyone help me with reading, web sites etc? The next step

Where to go from here...... As I find myself winding down on my Kennedy Proof collection, my next plan is to finish my Lincoln Cent 1934 - 1958 collection. Hopefully I'll have that finished by March. I don't have too much further to go. After that, I find myself torn with what to do next. I love Morgan dollars and have become really interested in commemorative dollars but, I don't think I want to embark on another extremely large collection at this time. Collecting Nobel Prize Medals

Not me, but my workplace. We're up to three now. For quite awhile, my father-in-law has been writing books about biomedical-oriented Nobel Prize winning research in Chemistry and Medicine and the scientists who won. The book on chemistry prize winners is at the publisher, and my father-in-law has been somewhat distressed that he might have to write another chapter quickly for this year's winner(s). All that made me think that there is a guy where I work who is sure to win the physics prize som

Langbord Hoard Offer

But the Government is paralyzed with hand wringing, naval gazing, and other such useless pursuits I read today that CAC has offered 20 million dollars for the 10 1933 Double Eagles. The article quoted a company principal stating they already have 7 solid offers to buy and they would be fine with hanging onto the other 3 for awhile. I think that is a very fair offer and will serve to forever protect these numismatic treasures. http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index.php/cac-offers-20-million-f

New HOPE HAS RISEN. Found a distributer today who said they would do everything possible to find my wanted coins, and with no money down. I see em before I buy em, can turn any or all down. No penalty, they said they would put them in their store and sell them anyway. Thanks for everybodies reply. And no it is not Ebay, been doing business there as a seller as well as a buyer for over a decade and no problem, except for two buyers who wouldn't pay and turned it over to Ebay. Needless to

date stamped lincoln.. test coin ? Help !!! I came across a very interesting penny yesterday. While I was searching thru a large pile of loose change, I noticed a lincoln memorial that stood out as gem unc w/ more of a yellowish copper colored appearance and maybe proof like. I put the coin aside to card it off today. When I carded this coin today, and looked at it under magnification,I noticed the coin was date stamped 12-31-74 above the coins 1975 date. Strung along

Taken advantage of. Well, I am still waiting for the 3 Silver Eagles I was promised over 3 weeks ago. Now I find out they never had them, even though the salesman said he "went in the back to physically check" that they were there. Well now they never had any. But they say they have 2 of the 3 coming, check back on Friday. This is what happens when you live in a rural ag state, small towns and no source for coins other than Ebay and the internet. You get strung along and along and along.

A Little Holiday Surfing Fun

Because Halloween is So Awesome Hi All, I was doing some random websurfing this evening when I started focusing on coins that have some kind of Halloween related theme. After some dead ends, I happened upon a set of 5 coins issued by Tuvalu and minted in Perth called Heroes and Villains. They are each one ounce of pure silver and denominated at 1 Dollar. Two of the five coins,Jekyl/Hyde and Van Helsing/Dracula meet my criteria for Halloween themed. Here is a picture of the Van Hels

What to do....

about an incorrect label I just received the latest addition to my NCG Franklin FBL set - or not. I bid on and won an auction for a "1951-S NGC MS-64FBL" Frankiln half. The photos in the listing weren't high resolution, but the label information was clear and the coin looked good. It arrived today; the label is 1951-S, MS-64FBL. The coin inside is a 1951-D. Does anyone attach any value to an incorrect label such as this, or should I just send it back? The original photo from the eba

Time to sell the Roosies

Been fun for a while, but its time to move on to other sets. I put my set together over the past 5 years and acquired some true conditional rarities and met some wonderful people along the way. I have also learned quite a bit about grading these little gems! I have enjoyed having the number one set in the Roosevelt clad series for the past three years, but its time to sell and move on to other interests. I also greatly enjoyed the competition. Good luck to everyone else that competes in th
