Ten years in the making

One journey's end After multiple visits to a dozen coin shops, and 100's of dealers at 8 monthly and annual coin shows over ten years. I have completed my 1964-1970 silver Kennedy proof/sms/business strike set: "JK's Kennedy's" #16 [as soon as they correct a scoring mistake] with the addition of 6 business strike Kennedys, 3 of which had to be sent back to NGC for corrections; a64-d mismarked as a P-mint, and a 65 and a 67 b-strike in ms-66 grades miss identified as special mint set strikes. Colonials

I really like the old Colonial Coins, I have a Washington Small Military Bust Colonial Piece which I am... considering sending it in to NGC Conservation to get it checked out and put in a holder. I know that it will get a details grade as most Colonial types that I have come across all have some environmental damage, yet for me it seem better to have them conserved and put in a holder than to leave them to possibily getting more damage somehow. The one I have is 1783 Small Bust Washington Port

Should I crack this one?

Nice Red/Brown or "Improperly cleaned"? I bought this one a little while ago for my raw Indian Cent collection. It's currently in a "DETAILS" slab, so I though cracking it out would be a no brainer. I've looked at this thing alot, and I can't see anything that would indicate a cleaning, let alone an improper one. Tell me what you think. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Almost Done!

Just 2 more to go! Hi fellow collectors, I was able to add another nice piece to my 50c Modern Commemorative collection the other day...the 1996 Olympics Soccer coin in an MS-70 grade. That leaves just 2 more to go to finish up the series. I had a bid on one other but the price went higher then I wanted to pay. Being patient does pay off though and they will eventually come at a fair price. Take care Jeffrey To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be

im stuck at a stand still

Looking for a new road to ride down I have come to a point where I don't know which direction I want to take in this hobby. I try to focus my attention on one set at a time and now that I can't go any further at this point I need to find a new direction. basically I started with 4 sets. The Wheat pennies, Indian Heads, Washington quarters and Morgan, Philly date set. I have the wheats fully completed, all except the 55 DD, which I have no intentions on buying now. My Indian heads are full

Where have all the money gone?

Where am I in the hobby/business world of numismatic? In simple words...I am on hold. Sorry...I don't chase anymore. I just walk and walk and talk and talk plus listen and listen. That was my pace at the ANA show in Chicago. I mortgaged my property in February (2011) and on hold (paying for the investment in the hobby). I missed some opportunities to ride the latest wave, but "It Only Money". I am in it for the long haul. Enjoy the hobby/business cuz "it only money" (paper that is)...

New Gold Exchanged for Old Gold

Phase 2 of a major re-organization in my collection is complete. A few months ago, I wrote about the beginning of a major shift in my collecting priorities. The first phase of this re-organization involved selling seven ANACS details graded gold coins to purchase an 1893-S Morgan Dollar. In Phase 2 of my re-organization, I decided to liquidate most of my proof ?First-Spouse? coins. With the proceeds of those ?New Gold? coins, I planned to purchase the ?Old Gold? coins necessary to complete the

Summertime Collecting Lull

While the East got drenched the West sweltered. I know the burning desire to acquire new coins will return soon but these last couple of months, I've had a certain disinterest in the research process that normally goes into any new purchase either big or small. I've made a few half-hearted bids on Ebay, mostly trolling for bargain purchases, but I just haven't had the desire to really do the hard statistical analysis that normally occurs when the days get shorter. This happens to me every

Ready to add a few more coins

After reading the replies to Kamakazy's journal I am sure SILVER will be the choice Friends, No posts lately but keeping up with the journals. Been working out of state this month in Ohio. A couple more weeks and a FAT check will be the trick to pay off next months bills and add a few more coins to the old collection. I'm not sure what I realy want---more silver mint set fillers or more coins for my Custom Set. I have a few lines on some silver dimes but could use some more Mocoms. The posts s

The Big Switch #2

My collection grows... August 2011 - Things are moving along nicely. Just completed my first #1 registry set; Presidential Proofs. Several more are in the top ten just waiting to achieve that #1 status. I'm having a great time with my Walker Half and Roosevelt Dime collections. I've been diligent in watching auction sites and been rewarded with my picking up coins here and there for fantastic prices. Joined the Collector's Society and await my package. Once it arrives, I'll be sending in

MY FIRST "POST-ANA SHOW" PRIZE IS ON THE WAY!

But Hurricane Irene... Is likely to delay the arrival. As soon as dealer inventories began to update, following the ANA Show, I started my frantic scanning for new "baubles" to thrill and delight. After viewing some nice treats; but nothing heart-stopping, I finally found it! - An 1885 Liberty 5 cent, PCGS MS-62. A quick call for description and some negotiating, and she's mine! The coin has a nice strike with strong frosty luster, and light gold toning. The mint frost is what grabbed m

Welcome to the American Numismatic Association

Finally... a member! I dug thru the couch coushins and found enough change (haha) to get a membership with the American Numismatic Association. What am I going to do with my membership? I don't know. I don't have time to travel so I can't go to conventions or meetings. Maybe I'll use it to better educate myself. The only thing that urks me is my membership runs from 08/26/2011 (today - the day I purchased my membership) and ends on 07/31/2012. What?!?!?! I lost a month on my 12-month membe

Update on the ding on my ATB Mount Hood

UPDATE: Should I return the Mount Hood ATB coin that has a small ding on the rim above the ?S? ? Yes is the answer.... I want to thank everyone for the response to my coin ding. I called up the Mint and a women told me to send it in for another one. But what she could not tell me is if I would receive a coin back guarantee. Unlike the last two ATB coins the Mint lifted the limited it has done so yet. So my belief i the coins are still selling at a pace the Mint likes. If I sent it back I might

My Submission Curse Is Broken

Finally got a super return... I've been a member of Collectors Society and the registry here now for close to a decade I believe--at least 8 years or so. I've written in the journals occasionally for the past 5 or 6 years about my experiences with submissions. My submissions have gone three ways primarily........... 1.) I submit some coins for regrade that are at that " magic level". This is the point at which a $500 coin jumps to a $5000 coin if it could just get ONE MORE POINT on the slab

NGC 1985 MS69 Red Lincoln Memorial population of 5

What a difference $50 can make Hi everyone. I just added this nice example of a NGC 1985 MS69 Red Lincoln Memorial to my registry collection. I had bid on this coin about a month ago through one of the online auction houses and the coin did not sell. Last night this coin came up for auction again and I increased my max bid by $50.00 and was successful last night. It is one of 5 graded by NGC at this grade with none higher. The overall strike on this coin is outstanding with great eye appe

A new red beauty

Galloping past 40 coins... This week I have added a couple new coins to my horses set. These coins put me past the 40 coin mark for the set! I have been looking for a Venezuela coin featuring the horse on the national arms shield for quite some time. I was patient, and picky about this one, and I'm happy with the coin I finally picked up. I purchased a 1965 25 Centimos piece from Teletrade graded MS65 by NGC. It's a superbly clean coin, and has great detail. I love the steely look of

Received my last ATB from the Mint But has a ding above the above the ?S? on the obverse side.

Should I return the Mount Hood ATB coin that has a small ding on the rim above the ?S? ? Just received my ATB Mount Hood 5 ounce coin today and not the best of the five I feel. I asked my daughter to open the US Mint shipping box which held the ATB coin. After that she opened the ATB US Mint box and when she looked at the Obverse side she notice right away that there was a slight nick on the rim. My dilemma is this, I was thinking of sending all five coins to get graded but I feel that the Mou
