BeawChan, this is for you

This is the picture of the penny i found that i told you about in my reply to your entry... I found this a few weeks ago in a box a pennies. About a week later, i found a blank planchet as well! I buy 1 box a week and usually find at least 8-15 wheats on average and sometimes a cool error of some kind.. Nick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 44,492 Registry Points down the tubes

After selling them off i will drop drastically in the points After tomorrow, when my Ebay listing for my Red, White and Blues II, III, IV PF70 UC Presidential Dollar sets sell I will loose a whopping 44,492. What is sad about this is my entire Lincoln Penny Collection is not even worth the registry points of these dollars. I have Lincolns with a population of 1 with none graded higher that are worth a 1/3 of the registry points. If anybody is looking for a steal on 49 Proof 70 UC Presidenti

The Waiting Is The Hardest Part

showing my age with a Tom Petty song reference... For years I have tried to become someone who strives to be a better person. One of the toughest and longest lasting of my character defects has always been my impatience..I struggle with it when driving in traffic, I struggle with it in grocery checkout lines, I struggle with it if I make the mistake of shopping with my wife ( good thing she doesn't read these)...and generally I struggle with it anytime people post or promise a specific time a

Easy come..... easy go......

Elation and depression..... So, I helped out at a different branch yesterday and while talking to one of the tellers, I noticed that he had a penny set apart at the top of his coin tray. Usually when I see that, it means wheat penny. However, this was a blank planchet!!! Definitely circulated, but a great find! I switched it out for another penny and put it in my pocket. When I got home and emptied my pockets, I couldn't find the coin, but I figured it just fell out into my car. This mo

The Set is shaping Up!!

But I need a little assist. Hi Folks, I received 6 brand-spankin new NGC slabs today containing chopmarked coins of the Orient, in this case, Great Britain, Peru (under Spain), Mexico (under Spain), Philippines, and Japan. If you click the first bar under this post, you can see the collection as it now stands. I also sent in 7 more coins yesterday so the set will soon have 20 residents. Here is my dilemma. Their is a US Trade Dollar in the set that has not been photographed by NGC and

Some great advice from a friend

It's always great to "talk" coins with a friend Greetings once more my friends and colleagues. Wanted to share and maybe pass on to those interested what was advised to me from a friend here on the chats. I had the privilege of talking to Kerry (aka W.K.F.) a couple of weeks ago by phone as we discussed our passion of Franklin's and Kennedy's. I had originally contacted him to discuss this one Franklin in particular and our conversation turned to the overall collection of these two

#1 For a Day or Two - 21st Century Type Set, Proofs Only

How I Beat the NGC Scoring System (sort of) and Achieved Sole #1 Status for a few Days! Thanks to a quirk of NGC fate the scores for coins in the 21st Century Type Set, Proofs Only were suddenly changed. With a bit of quick thinking I saw the minor change NGC had made in scoring, for no apparenent reason. I quickly moved around the coins I already owned and Bingo I achieved Sole #1 Status, well for a few days. NGC caught their mistake in scores, changed it back and now I am back to sharing #1

I'm Becalmed!!

In the Sargasso Sea of Numismatics. Hi Folks, It has been a fairly quiet collecting period for me lately due to the fact that I still have 27 coins in the NGC pipeline and I still have 7 more to send. According to Lisa, the first 7 of those 27 (all chopmarked foreign) will be arriving at my home in a week or so. The other 20 coins are U.S. coins that will help me complete my Jefferson Nickel Wartime set as well as add a couple of upgrades to other sets I currently maintain. The final seve

The anticipation begins...

MY first 16 D finally made it to the show! I sent out my first 1916 D merc last Saturday. I spent good money to have it shipped as i have had bad luck with USPS lately. Anyway, I knew it was going to be much slower but under lock and key so it was much safer. So i see that it made it to Sarasota today and has been logged in as received! Im keeping my fingers crossed. I know its going to be "details" graded but the thing has gotta be damn near AU!! Minimum XF-AU. It was givin to me as an inheri

MEXICO CITY TRAVELER

This coin traveled across the Pacific and back. I finally got the correct pictures for the batch of Trade Coins I will be receiving in a few days. This is example is an 8 Reales, dated 1786, and minted in Mexico City. It was graded VG Details and has numerous small chops across both its Obverse and Reverse. The type of Chop used indicates a coin that circulated in the Philippines. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

THE JEFFERSON 1939 SAN FRANCISCO NICKEL

Its as Rare or possibly Rarer, than the 1939-Denver! Finding this 1939-S Jefferson Graded-MS67 By NGC,took me by Surprize! I realized I just found a very scarce Jefferson Reverse that was always considered/expensive issue,right-along with its sibling, the Reverse of 1940. Not many of these Exist or Certified in this MS67 Grade. Where with Both Grading-Services, PCGS And NGC Together-Less than 25 are in this Grade,as of July 2011. The Reverse of 38s are Beautiful Nickles, but then finding o

SO WHAT ARE THEY REALLY WORTH?

NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo Presidential Dollars Like my fellow collector in the previous post I have decided to sell some coins from my registry set. Whatever I do make from selling these coins will be reinvested into my Lincoln Memorial Registry Sets. So my question is, what are the PF70 UC Presidential dollars really worth? Now of course when these sets are first released people are paying a premium for them so they can be the first to add them to there registry sets. I listed all 49 coins from

Selling the Statehood Quarters

Decided to take the step and sell. Decided to sell off the coins I'm least interested. After much debate with the wife, Ive decided to chop off the Statehood quarters. I have enough of these sets already (uncertified). Below is the link to my ebay entry. If you know anybody that is interested, let them know. I have a reserve set on them and its a tad lower than FMV. I didnt add any price for the NGC boxes that they will come in. I understand most people already have a bulk of these and only wa

My best find ever!!

Star Notes at Work As much as I enjoy working on my NGC registry sets, I enjoy when I get new money in at the bank where I work, because it gives me the opportunity to find fun notes at face value. I hit the mother load today. I have had some 10 straps of $1 bills in the vault for a few weeks and since it was slow today, I told my co-worker I was going to check them for stars. When I opened the FED's plastic outer covering, I looked at the first note and what do I see, but a star! As I wa

Does Anyone Recognize Me!!!!

I was sent to the wrong household. Well I got my shipping notice from Danny at NGC today and I also got my images. I anxiously opened them up to see how they looked and was suddenly looking at image after image of gold coins, 10 in all. Well I immediately checked my shipping notice to make sure I was getting MY COINS and not the Gold pieces. Mine are coming. Then I fired off an email to Danny asking him to let the Imaging Team know they sent me the wrong pictures. Imaging Team seems to be

Today is day 1 for the journal entries

Having trouble with photography. I thought I was going to become a coin collector! I have actually tried this before, but somehow it did not work. Maybe this time it will. I have entered some coins. Having a lot of problems with pictures. I am not a photographer. I am just barely a coin collector! I feel funny calling myself a coin collector even though there are a lot of coins around the house here and there. Back to picture problems.... I have tried different options and I am stil

1933 Double Eagles, 1974 Aluminum Cent, 1964-D Peace Dollar, et al...

Why all the fuss over nothing! While the US attorney is thumping her chest and saying "you can't steal from the government and get away it" - the thousands of idiotic deals and contracts that allow people to steal from the government go on... How stupid is this whole thing? Monetize the coins, offer the family a "finder's fee - 10% of the proceeds", sell them at auction and appropriate the money to paying down the national debt. Don't steal from the American people by taking this absurdity t

Does NGC Hate Dimes??

I am surprised at the nod that NGC gives to some high-quality dimes. OK, so I find this 1966 SMS dime, MS69 for $300.00. I am putting together a nice SMS set, so I look up the point value for this particular coin. 45 POINTS!! The MS69FT only gets a paltry 54 points. Being curious, I look up the other two dimes in the 60's SMS set. The 1965 MS69 is worth 220 points, but the MS68 is only worth 12. The 1967 fares a little better in MS68, but it has a lower value in MS69 than the 1965.

new registry point system

A proposal for recognizing rarity, cost, demand, etc., across wildly different collecting spectrums - (This is in reply to Captain Clipon's post, but I thought a new registry proposal merited its own journal entry. Please read his message board thread, found at the end of this journal.) We modern MS collectors, we know we're niche collectors, in a minority at that. It's comparably cheap to buy a top-pop for us (say, $2000 on the open market, $1000 in live auction, or $400 on EBay $.01 star
