This is pretty cool

Modern coin with a horse hologram! I wasn't sure what to think about this design, or whether I would be able to capture the hologram image with my camera when I got the coin in hand, but I took a gamble. Turns out that it's pretty damned cool in hand, and the colors and hologram appearing on this coin are unique to my horse themed set so far. I know there is a hologram Canadian gold coin I've had my eye on for some time, but this one was much more affordable, and I love the artistry of Polis

Finally acquired

"Mistake Morgan's" I finally acquired the last "Mistake Morgan's" that I needed. This is the one with 8 tail-feathers on the eagle. In reality, eagles have 7 tail-feathers, not 8. The slab is a bit scratched up on the reverse side but not enough to warrant replacement.   moondoggy To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Another Die Variety Combination

Not for the Morgan Dollar but for the IKE Okay, it is summer vacation which means I get caught up on a lot of reading. I decided to start going through all of the Coin World Magazine editions that they have in digital format. (I?ve only had a subscription for a year or so.) It makes for great early morning reading when the entire world is still quiet and peaceful. Anyway, I?m sure not going to remember which volume all of these articles are in so I?m cataloging the articles related to US coin

Anyone help with more info on this medal?

I have some details, but looking for mintage numbers. I may have ventured into murky waters with my most recent acquisition. I saw this item and was immediately drawn to its beauty, but it's not a "coin" per se. It is one of the Heraldic Art Medals released during the mid 20th Century. The description where I purchased it said the following: "This gorgeous coin is from the series of Half-Dollar-sized medals issued from 1959-1979 by the Heraldic Art Company. Founder Bob McNamara sought to

TO REVEAL, OR NOT TO REVEAL?

That Is The Question. Last year, I joined a bridge club at the local Senior Citizen Center. Over time, the group has dwindled to just 4 people. We play weekly, and have become friends. Our conversations are filled with talk of past careers, families, health issues, politics, and hobbies. Often, I've been asked, "What do you do for fun besides Bridge?". I mention an interest in golf, and various sports, but have always steered the conversation away from any mention of coins. I like thes

1939-D Washington Quarter MS-65 Rainbow Obverse

Another recent addition to my soon filled Washington Quarter Set . This coin sports an absolutely awesome rainbow splashed obverse along the rim with lovely light gold toning everywhere else ...the reverse has beautful gold rim toning . Truly the most attractive coin of this date and mint I have yet seen . Coins like this one just make this set so much more interesting . Toning is not uncommon with Washington Quarters and is especially desirable on semi key and key date coins like this one .

Changing times

Times seem to be changing, or I am getting luckier. I found some new babies for my collection. Will be getting back my Morgans in a few more days, 14 of them, and two Olympics too, one proof and one MS. Also, I will be adding in my new St G 1909 MS64, and a few golden oldies. These will be the first new additions to my registry since a while back. Also, I sold a few coins, and will have to delete them from my registry, already took out 20 coins from the silver anniversary collection the MS

Curiousity Got the Best of Me

And led to the utter Destruction of a very nice Pen Holder. Friends, many years ago, when silver was in its absolute doldrums, I picked up a nice pen set at auction that contained two Morgan silver Dollars in a plexiglas frame. One morgan was displayed obverse-up and the other was reverse-up. all in all, a very attractive piece picked up for about 15 dollars. Flash forward to today. For some reason, I decided to take the frame apart and find out the date and mintmark of each dollar. sinc

Three New Ladies for My Set

Behind the scenes, I am always on the lookout for coins to add to my ?Inspirational Ladies? custom set. With 70 coins in my ?Inspirational Ladies? custom set it can seem as if new additions are a slow go. In reality, nothing could be farther from the truth. This year alone I have added five coins to my set. Within those five coins are allegorical representations of Liberty/Freedom on a 1910 Mexican Caballito Peso and the goddess Minerva on our 2011 ?Medal of Honor? $5 commemorative. Another co

A SET GOES BYE BYE

A sacrifice to the Gods of Symmetry. I eliminated the classic commemorative set from my list of competitive sets today. The set has been bothering me for awhile because I have no hope of ever completing it and because, for some strange reason, I am obsessed with the need to complete any sets I start. The coins, all of which I love, will remain in my general coin holdings, of course. I may try and put together some kind of Custom set with a few of them, we'll have to wait and see if that is

Addition to my Morgans

another + coin I added another addition to my Morgan's. I won an on line auction for this super 1882 S Morgan, graded MS65+ last week. Super coin for the price. Just lucky, being in the right place at the right time for this gem. Also added a 1898 in an MS64 grade and will add another this week as soon as it arrives. My first OGH

It lives up to the grade I have read several posts on here about the Old Green Holders from PCGS (often abbreviated as OGH). I didn't have any of these in my collection until today. I found a nice example of the Stone Mountain Memorial 1925 Half Dollar about a week ago. I've been watching several of these sell in auctions, and have seen a few with even unsightly "toning" still bring a pretty nice price. According to Krause, this commemorative has a total mintage of 1,314,709 and it is r

Changing Gears

Third gear went out----Morgans and President Dollars Friends, I have been having a great time collecting so far this year. I guess I have started around 10 different sets but two sets have set Idle. I am not sure I am enjoying these as much so they are getting moved into my Sale or Trade lot. My Franklin half dollars, Silver quarters and dimes, and my Silver Modern Commemorative dollars have taken third gear to a new level. I have added around 200 coins this year and plan to add plenty mor

The Holy Grail

Owning an MS70 Lincoln Cent When I started my 21st Century Type Set just a few short months ago, I would constantly go to the Registry listing and admire the coveted jewel of the MS70RD Lincoln Cent example in "The Ness Collection". It was a coin to only dream of. To pursue other goals (namely to put together one of the most superb collections of Roosevelt Proof Dimes ever), the owner of "The Ness Collection" recently put much of his 21st Century Type Set up for sale. Long story short, I a

Missed It!

An anniversary of sorts anyway. It was a year ago last Monday that I started entering coins into a few registry sets. My how time flies. So how have things changed in the past year? Well, I've gone from a few certified coins with no real purpose in mind to a plan. Like all plans this one has been modified, re-modified, expanded, and modified again. It kind of makes me wonder what it will look like next year. I've already decided to take a comment about other hobbies that Kerry made and a

Early Release

For the future of the hobby, PLEASE do away with this "price inflating" label. How can you justify any significance to the collecting hobby with this label? Why are coins that are made for 10 weeks out of the year (ATB quarters) even considered for this? Is it not illegal to deny a coin in a mint sealed shipment with documentation to prove the release date from qualifying? I for 1 am waiting for the day when someone with a little cash files a lawsuit to end this money making practice. You are

A Step Back? (For Now)

The Current correction in the value of silver has finally caught up to SOME of my MS-65 & MS-66 Morgan Dollars. It seems the day I have been expecting has arrived, and some of my Morgan Dollars have retreated from their lofty highs. What is amazing about this step back is that almost all my MS-65?s have decreased in value, while all my MS-66?s are continuing to INCREASE in value. This appears to indicate that for now there is still a high demand for affordable high-grade coins. A few mo

What a major difference in photo's

all for under a dollar I sat here today continuing to research on how I could make my coin photo's better. As with most of you I continue to learn the more advanced settings of my Canon EOS digital camera. If you recall back in December I purchased an "Ott" type lamp which really made a big leap in the quality of the photo's I had taken before the lamp. Now today as I was sitting here the proverbial lamp went on over my head (pardon the pun) Construct a light box and shoot the photo's i

A few More Choice Weekend Finds in Pocket Change !!!

Forget the Registry just for a minute and re-discover the thrill of finding collectables at face value in your pocket !! Looking thru change in the till at work again this weekend yielded a bonanza of coins .....nothing really valuable of course ( although I do still hold faint hope of a double die popping up one day on a Lincoln Cent ).....this weekend's haul so far : Roosevelt Dimes :1960 in a great AU , ( 2) 1963 Avg Circ , 1956-D Aver Circ , one 1968 Canadian 50% Silver Dime , one 1944-P

One of a kind

At least, for now... A couple weeks ago I snagged another beautiful world coin featuring an absolutely stunning horse image. The coin commemorates the 2000th anniversary of the death of Virgil (the historic Roman poet, best known for his Aeneid). The coin was minted in 1981 by the Republic of San Marino, an independent country with a very interesting history. With a land area of about 24 square miles, and a population of around 30,000 inhabitants, San Marino mints coins primarily for col

I bought the slab instead of the coin....AGAIN!!

Actually...I bought the label instead of the coin. Hi everyone, I went with buying a label when I was ready to pick up a 2011 SAE a few days ago. I had quite a few different labels to choose from and that was the motivating factor...after the grade. The first 2 labels are the common BROWN and the ER BLUE. I guess these are the only 2 available for "casual" submitters, like myself, to NGC. Since I have these types of labels in my collection, it was a no brainer to skip on those. The other

Starting The Summer With A PF70UC Lincoln Cent

Definitely a high note but summer is always a two edged sword School is done! The high school baseball season is over. We bowed out in the 3rd round losing to the team that would eventually claim the state title, all of the final exams for the kids are finished and the Class of 2011 walked across the stage to get their diplomas last night. I have one teacher workday left on Monday but rest assured I will out of the school before 1:00 PM and won?t be heading back until mid-August. Summer is alw
