Hi Ho Silver ... ATB!

I was on the waiting list for the April 28 Hot Springs hockey puck public sale - but I just got my notice of shipment today! In the words of W.K.F., "Greetings Collectors!" Before I get to the puck, I'm on business in Denver. I had no idea the U.S. Mint tours are like getting into the White House - the guard turned me away at the wrought iron fence, since I didn't have a reservation. Whenever I travel, I try to pick up a box of coins to cherrypick. So I got a box of dimes today. Four si

Quick post...

New horse coin I finally had a chance today to catch up on photographing some of the raw coins I've been purchasing. For now, I'm only going to post one that was strikingly beautiful and will hopefully eventually make it to NGC for grading and become a part of my official custom set of horse themed coins. The coin is a 1979 100 dirham piece from Libya. The Libyan Dirham is equal to 1/1000 of the Libyan Dinar (the main unit of currency in Libya). So, this is basically equivalent to the "di

THE DE-VALUEATION OF THE DOLLAR (PEACE THAT IS)

POINT VALUES PLUMMIT I would like to say a few words about the recent update of the points awarded for Peace Dollars. Even after taking a 5,800 point hit and dropping 40 places in the ranking. It is a good thing. It evens the playing field by decreasing the point values between the grades. The difference between say a MS65 and MS66 which used to be 500 points is now 100 and the other grades are similar. Some of the leaders in the set lost as many as 70,000 points, how would you like going to b

What A "Gift"!

What a welcomed occurrence. This correction is a gift from God. Greetings Collectors, I've been waiting on this correction in silver for sometime. It's just not healthy when prices go parabolic like they've been the better part of the last month. I thought the correction had "played out" when it reached a little above $40 so I jumped on a large pile pictured below. Well, neither myself or anyone can call an absolute bottom so I just decided that $40-$41 was my entry point. Well I just jumped

Silver Dollars may be Taking the Oxygen out of Most Everything Else

If you were to represent the pool of money available to buy coins as a pie, silver dollars are currently taking a much bigger piece of the pie. No one can deny the sudden surge in value of high-grade common date silver dollars. Conversely, there is evidence showing that the inverse is true concerning copper and smaller silver coins thus proving that with every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In other words, for the savvy collector there are some good deals in the marketplace.

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL 5 OZ SILVER Bullion Silver Coins

Graded coins no series... The US Mint started selling the ATB 5 ounce silver coins. Question if NGC is grading these coins why haven?t they started a series for them. Unless I am blind I did not find any. I will be collecting these coins. The ATB 5 ounce coin last year?s is nice coin. You do not need a Magnifying Glass to see the detail in them. Any thoughts on this?

Neat Little Find

After Complaining about a lack of silver coins in circulation someone felt sorry for me .......Greetings again Collectors : My recent complaints about not being able to find silver coinage did not go unheard....somekind soul unknown to me ended up dropping a 1964 Roosevet Dime in as payment today at work and my eagle eye snagged it right up .This collector can hear a silver coin from 100 feet away if it's dropped even slightly and can spot a silver dime in a pile of clads without hesitation . DOLLARS TO DIMES, PCGS NGC, MODEREN COINS

A REAL "POE POUR REE" Greetings Society Members: Another day another dime, how about that. I found a nice 1942 D MS67 FB in a PCGS holder to day. The price was right so I grabbed it. It is one of the easier dates to find in 67 FB. Since I have only the 1942 S to go and it will be a tuff one. I have shifted gears back to my Peace Dollar set. After up grading the 1921 to MS64 and adding a 1923 S in MS64 the bet pick up was a 1926 in MS65+ all three coins residing in PCGS holders. The set has mo

Another Completed (for all practical purposes) Set

Finally went for the gold..... I have been working on a 1932 Mint set (the year of my mom's birth) for several years. 1932 was an unusual year for the Mint. Deep in the Depression, there wasn't a lot of demand for circulating coins. Cents were produced at Philadelphia and Denver, and the first Washington quarters at all three mints. No nickels, no dimes, no half dollars, no silver dollars. The Washington quarters were supposed to be a sort of commemorative issue of the 200th anniversary o

Rare New Edition!

Only 10 Minted! The newest rare coin to join the Belgian Congo family is a 1970 1 Zaire Silver Piefort-Essai, which is 4.75 mm thick. The coin is thick enough to warrant a custom slab from NGC, which is quite notably larger than their normal slabs. It is graded NGC PF65CAM. It is one of only 10 minted and the only one graded by any grading company to date. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Sold My Mint Dollar Rolls for PF70 Dollar Slabs Sets...Bad Mistake or Not?

Mint Dollar rolls vs Dollar Proofs I just started my DOLLARS - PRESIDENTS PROOF sets. I just brought 3 sets of 4 DOLLARS - PRESIDENTS PROOF NGC 70s coins each. I picked up a 2007,2008, and the 2009 set. I am looking for the 2010 set. I was collecting just the US Mint dollar rolls but I sold them off. Too expensive to buy a roll of dollars value at $25.00 but cost $36.00. Granted that the sets are more expensive then the rolls but I believe the set will hold their value. The 2007 George Washin

More and More Paper Less and Less Silver ........

Finding older paper currency in circulation seems to be getting more common and silver coins less and less of late .... Greetings Collectors : I am finding a new trend with my circulated pickings at work .....I used to pick up a stray silver coin or two every week ( a Roosevelt Dime , Kennedy Clad Half or War Nix most common ) now I am finding nothing ...I mean nada . In recent weeks though I have seen a spike in old bank notes ....2 of which I previously shared . Here's a third I recently g

An Ancient PCGS Slab

There was a time when PCGS was only another potential player trying to make it in a market that barely existed. I was going through some of my loose holding today and I ran across another item i barely remembered even owning. I believe I received it at the time it was first distributed, I have know idea where or why. It is a SAMPLE slab from PCGS. The coin in the slab is a very common silver Roosevelt Dime that was obviously used to simply show potential customer how PCGS planned on slabbin

What does "complete" mean to you?

I can't seem to "complete" a set. I noticed, the other day, that I have six registry sets that have that coveted 100%. This means that I own a coin for every slot in that set. I'm pretty happy about the accomplishment, but I'm not satisfied. Not Yet. I still remember being 11 or 12 years old and going to a boy scout meeting. One of the scouts was receiving his coin collecting merit badge and he had his collection with him. I think he had a birth year set, a Lincoln cent folder, a J

9 more beauties

Some beautiful world coins I will start by just saying that the "custom set" idea has really changed my outlook on collecting. It really makes for a different kind of "hunt" and satisfaction when you find a gem. About a month ago I started my "Horses" custom set, and while it is still relatively small, I am learning a great deal about world history, culture, and geography along the way. It became apparent shortly after starting the set that many if not most of the coins that would fit nice

A few more Franklin Halfs

The Juggle act of the year Friends, I had a rough week as there were too many purchases this week to complete. We have 3 birthdays this week in our house ( my wife, son, & I). I managed to get my wife a new set of tires and we are going Monday to get her a new Nicon-D 3000. My son has 2 new tires on the front of his truck, & I got some more Benjis for my half set. After a tight budget was figured and plans set I was told I needed the money to pick up 1/2 a steer I asked for 2 months ag

It's Coin Day

One of two days in the month when I get paid and immediately go to add to my collection. We all look forward to the days when we get paid so we can go add to our collections. For me, it's today and I look forward to getting home and purchasing some coins to add to my collection. In addition, I have some storage boxes that UPS should be delivering today. That will give me an excuse to pull the whole collection out and do some organizing. I've been finding out that even though slabs are mean
