Here we go again...

Where's the beef? The year was 1984 when Wendy's released their famous marketing "Where's the Beef?" campaign. I'm using an analogy to this slogan in jest as "Where's the Beard?" on the recent Lincoln cents. This post is somewhat related to my previous post about the Mint reverting to the older version of John Flanagan's Washington bust on the 2010-present quarters. This was a welcome reversion for many, based on the feedback I received. Apparently many disliked the "spaghetti-haired" Wash

The Palladium Age

The Mint knows what we like. I understand a Bill has been introduced to authorize the striking of a 1 ounce palladium bullion coin with the old Mercury Dime design. Not sure if they also plan on using the same reverse design but the Obverse is what we all like. Since the Mercury Dime is my favorite coin of all time, I must admit that the idea of the palladium version is very exciting. However, the more I think about it the more I wonder if the design will look as good all blown up. The

Follow up

You never know what will happen I am taking the time to share with you my experiences with grading of coins. Every day I look at coins that I may buy or sell. It is important that I have command of the likely grades of coins that I encounter. When coins falls outside of what I thinks the grade of a coin should be, then I take notice. Why you ask, well as a buyer I hope not to over pay for a coin. A coin that perceived to fall in to a grade range upon first examinations then to find that the co

MS70 vs MS69

You make the call I have posted a photo of a 2010 American Silver Eagle coin. I sold this coin to a good customer of mine and then customer brought the coin back to me because the L in liberty was nicked. His statement was, it was not a prefect coin and should not have been graded as a MS70 by NGC. Well I looked at the 2011 ASE and the coin had an imperfection on the L in Liberty. I ponied up the cash and sent the coin in question to NGC for an Appearance Review. I received the coin back today

First Tiime Submission

With batted breath I waited since March 4th for my coin submissions to show up. Hello all, I just got back my first grading that I submitted. I'm new to coin collecting and I was so excided about the 5 ASE I sent in. Hoping for a 70 but knowing it might be under. Well they were 69s and I am happy that they didn?t fall under 69. My search continues for the true 70 1986 SAE. On that note can anyone tell this beginner how to tell when a coin was cleaned? Out of the five coins I sent in one came b

New Submission

Waiting for 5 I just sent in 5 raw coins to NCS as they are older and may need a bit of preservation. The coins are an odd group but ones I wanted to send in for my own collection. I sent a 1801 Drapped Bust Cent, a 1910 Lincoln Cent, a 1846 Braided Hair Cent, and 2 Buffalo Nickels 1915 and 1916. I expect some of these will only get a details grade but they are well worth preserving and encapsulating for my benefit. I will let you know what the outcome is when I get them back. Dave To see ol

Good Progress

My reflections and observations on the progress of ?Gary?s High-Grade Morgans? and ?Gary?s MS-65 & 66?s?. Greetings all, three months ago I started a new collection based on MS-65 & 66 Morgan Dollars at an average cost of $200/coin. My research showed that approximately 22 coins or 20% of all the dates and mints met my criteria. Now that my custom set, ?Gary?s High-Grade Morgans? is 64% complete, it?s a good time to reflect on the progress and quality of the coins I have acquired to da

Mystery solved...

But I still don't know WHY they did it! So I did a bit more digging after yesterdays post. What I initially surmised is true. The sharp, detailed, and slightly modified obverse of the State and Territory quarters of 1999-2009 has been forgone in the 2010 America The Beautiful quarters. The original bust design of the Washington Quarter Dollar first minted in 1932 was the work of John Flanagan. This classic and extremely recognizable design was a mainstay from 1932-1998 (save the slightly

2010 ATB back home from a nice trip to sunny FL.

Can you believe this??? Wow what a nice grade. How could I get so lucky. A YOSMITE MS69DLP only 2 in grade with none higher. I think I will be happy for a week. I am sure next Monday more coins will find this top grade as well but till then I will smile To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Dont just delete survey's!!

Heritage Auctions taught me this lesson. Roughly two months ago, I was running down the hundreds of emails i had received in my personal e-mail account. Normally i would just delete most emails based on the title of it, and surveys usually get deleted the fastest. I dont like people prying into my preferences of collecting, reading, listening etc. etc. But that day i decided to open the e-mail, i read how they would be awarding some of the respondants a coin as a prize. So i answered the quest

A Nice Little Surprise

Free Stuff is Always Welcome in the Beaw's Den. I stopped at our mailbox on the way home from work today and immediately saw a large fat brown envelope amidst the usual collection of magazines, Cox Cable post cards, and other assorted junk. I pulled the fat brown envelope from the mailbox, looked at the label, and saw it was from Whitman Books. I ripped open the envelope and gazed upon a copy of Clifford Mishler's Coins: Questions and Answers. Now I'm puzzled, I have not ordered anything f

2010 Washington Quarter Change??

Why did they go back to the less detailed Washington bust for the 2010 release? When I received my 2010 type coin for the new "America The Beautiful National Parks" series I noticed right away a very striking (no pun intended) difference in the obverse detail quality. Firstly, almost all of the hair detail was rounded, dull, and looked worn. Secondly, upon further inspection, I noticed the obverse bust is all-together different from the 1999-2009 States & Territories issues as is clear f

Spring Has Sprung...

with a vengeance. It has snowed off and on all weekend. But this is about coins so on to that. I said that I would spend the winter trying to get a least a rough grade for all my raw mint state coins. Now, I'm finished. Well, almost. I've still got to enter about 200 into my custom lists here. That's a job all unto itself. The results weren't unexpected, but a little disappointing even so. Out of over 1000 coins, less than a hundred are worth taking a second look at and of these less th

A public plea to Mr. Q. David Bowers

I know this is a bit strange, but..... Mr. Bowers, if you read these Journals or if one of your many close freinds in the hobby do so, please please reprint your wonderful book, "American Coin Treasures & Hoards". I only read a portion of your book one time in the library and i thought it would still be available but somehow it seems to have disappeared from the collection. I would LOVE to have a copy of your book but cannot afford the rather hefty markups on Ebay or Amazon. Please cons

2011 SACAGAWEA PROOF DIE CRACKS???

Is it really a PF70ER? Hello everyone, I just received a 2011 Sac PF70ER in the mail, and was examining it when I found 2 tiny die cracks between 7 and 8 O'clock on the true reverse of the coin. The coin is definitely a 70, but I wonder if any more of you have noticed this. With the relatively small number of 70s, as compared to other years, might they qualify as a "mint error" also? If you have one or more, I'd like to know. On another hand, are any of you sending in coins to be graded, a

Just Added Another SAE

The end of the week ends with a nice Eagle. Today I received my 2010 W Silver Eagle Proof Dollar Liberty. I am on my way to my goal of collecting First Year, 20th Anniversary, 25th Year, 25th Anniversary slabs PF 70s. I sent five SAE and I hoping one is a 70. But after reading Ken?s journal "Soul Crusher" I do not know if I will get a 70 out of the five. I know from a friend that Eagles from the US Mint are either 69s or 70s. My fingers are cross.

Seduced by the Mint

Or how, despite my negative feelings toward the Mint, I still had to purchase a proof set. When I looked in my Yahoo mailbox this morning, I found a short email from the U.S. Mint advertising the availability of the 2011 Clad National Parks Quarter set for 14.95. Even though I vowed not to purchase anything directly from the Mint and even though I know I'll be able to pick up the set at a lower price leter. I still logged onto their site, opened my account and bought the Proof Set. I thi
