Great Dalton, Ga. April 2011 Coin Show

Morgan Dollar Collector Interests Spent six hours at the April Dalton, Georgia coin show where there were about 300 dealers with tables there. I was only interested in graded/slabbed Morgan Dollars and had a great time looking at all the slabbed graded coins, buying some, and selling quite a few 'Extras' in my collection. 1885 Was A Very Good Year

1885 was a very good year for my Morgan Dollar collection, but not so for the Carson City Mint. A number of significant events occurred in 1885; among them were the births of World War II Admiral Chester Nimitz and General George Patton. In 1885, the magazine ?Good Housekeeping? hit the newsstands and Mark Twain?s ?Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? was on the way to become a best seller. In 1885, we saw significant advances in medicine with the first surgical appendectomy and an effective vaccin

Man Finds 8.2 LB Gold Nugget in Back Yard

This is something you really ought to check out if the yellow metal interests you in the least. It's a site to behold. Also just fyi, I have listed a couple other good sites that would be of interest to you all in my last couple posts. Greetings Collectors & Gold Lovers First of all this may be the shortest post in history for me. Just wanted to say that I know this is a "coin collecting" site, but I don't believe there is a person among you that would not be at all interested in someone

THE NUMISMATIC EMBERS ARE STARTING TO GLOW

The Second Purchase Of The Year Is A Rarity That Has Long Been On My Want List. After 18 months of numismatic abstinance, I've now made coin purchases in March and April. I found the right 1912-S Five Cent to fit my collection, after searching for a number of years. Typically, I stumble across either circulated examples or pricey MS65's, or problem coins. This is also my first CAC coin. It is an MS-63 with a great strike, minimal marks, and muted luster under gray/brown toning, which give

My First Journal Entry and Probably my last

A Golden Opportuity for those collectors who collect what I have been doing for over 20 years. I will try to make this as short as I can , that wont be easy though, and I dont even know if I am doing this right, I am a laryngectomee, and cannot speak due to agent orange in Vietnam, a lot of you now have probably met me or seen me at the shows or seen some of my coins , or dealt with me on ebay or any of the auctions, anyway to look up my sets in the Registry just look up Gilbie and you will se

Grading Standards

What a difference between companies!! This coin was graded MS 70 from SGS. It came back as an MS 62 from NGC. Keep in mind I did this as a test of standards for both companies and to learn some of the finer points myself. It is just a shock that there are people really off the mark grading coins at some places. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

PCGS MS66+ 1972 Double Die Obverse Lincoln Memorial

Selling off my autograph collection and re-investing into coins Hi everybody. This is my latest addition to my Lincoln Memorial registry set. PCGS population of 2 with 18 graded higher. It is a very nice addition to my collection. I recently sold a large portion of an autograph collection of mine. I had been collecting since I was a teenager and amassed quite a collection. Presidents, Vice Presidents, politicians, artist, signers of the Declaration, inventors, explorers, kings and queens,

Custom set additions

Three new coins... Over the weekend I added three new beauties to my horses custom set collection. First: The 2008 Jackson's Liberty Medal, featuring the beautiful bust liberty on the obverse, and a great image of Andrew Jackson riding on horseback on the reverse. This medal fits nicely into the "horse" set with one of the most beautifully presented images of a horse on US modern issues. Second: I added a Proof 67 Ultra Cameo example of the 1976 Samoa Silver 1 Tala. This coin features

Finally ! Finished another Registry Set !!

But do we ever really finish these or are they just a continual work in progress ? I am pleased to be able to say that I today finished another Registry Set....My Silver Proof State Quarter Set is finally done . Well maybe not...I could upgrade it quite a bit to be sure but every slot is now filled . I think now I am going to take a bit of a breather then finish my regular issue 1932-64 quarter set . I have unfortunately been ( and am still ) very sick with Bronchitis and it's really kicki

Bought my first "dozen"...

Eisenhowers'...But a little rant first. It seems like everything that comes out of the mint at the present time needs some type of 'special label', comes in a 'limited quanity', or just costs too d*mn much money. Look at the ATB frisbees coming out again. Funny how the mint didn't have any silver back when it was $20 an ounce, they will probaly sell 50 million ASE this year now that its $40+. So I decided to slowly sell my "extra" coins that are not in a slab. So far I have sold enough that I

My first Eisenhower Silver Dollar

and other housekeeping..... Howdy Friends, Recently added this 1976 S Eisenhower Bicentennial Silver Dollar certified by NGC in MS67 to my 20th Century Type Set. There were about 5 Million coins issued and NGC has graded a total of 1250 of them, to date 383 examples graded MS67 only 61 in MS68 with none finer. My winning bid of $26 on eBay was just over half the FMV of $47. I own a few raw proofs but this is my first mint state example and one of the rarest of my entire graded modern coin c

Changing Gears In This Hobby Is A Blast!

I have mentioned many times as to getting on a "tear" with this series and that one, constantly mixing it up to where I feel very good as to where I'm at presently. And have pretty much ignored statements by others that I was a fool and an insufficiently_thoughtful_person. I mean really, what in the hell do they know? Greeting Collectors, First of all I want to thank the multitudes who have written me over the last week or so. I know my posts are long, and believe it or not, I re-read them s

Good Returns from NGC

and the US Mint did a horrible job with quality control! Hello everyone, I got my returns back from NGC and I am very happy with the results! 3 - 2010 SAEs PF70UC 2 - 2011 US Army $1 PF70UC 2 - 2011 US Army $1 MS70 1 - 2011 US Army 50c PF70UC 1 - 2011 US Army 50c PF69UC 2 - 2011 US Army 50c MS69 The Mint really dropped the ball with the quality of the MS US Army 50c pieces. Buy Gold & Silver Now! (Really??)

REALLY! Believe it or not, this ride is far from over with. And if one were to break down the individual components, it's very plain to understand.Greetings Collectors,This will be the 4th time I've posted a journal with this title. But this time more than the other two postings I'm sure there are some dissenting persons out there in "numismatic land".My 1st post was on 3/19/09 and gold was $950. There were dissenters then which posted almost immediately after mine that this would not be a wise

Redefining an Acquisition Strategy

Silver and gold prices are creating quite the challenge Indeed, it is a rare day when I can sit down with my coins in the middle of the week. Silver and gold prices continue to climb and we are most definitely in the middle of a feeding frenzy for precious metals. In fact, it seems that many coin collectors have moved from collecting coins to amassing metals. Well, I don?t have the resources or the inclination to do anything other than collect coins. The problem arises when trying to fill thos

First Submissions to NGC on their way back.

Results of my first NGC Submission. About a month ago I sent in 5 coins and my coupon for free submissions. Not being an expert grader I really didn't know what to expect. It took about a month to figure out which 5 were going. I perused the message boards to see what some of the "Details" grades looked like to avoid getting any of those. Of the 5 coins I sent in, only two were "clean" without a Details note. That was a little disappointing but I'll use it to learn from. Of the three two

The "Old Green Holder" By PCGS " Mercury Examples"

Oh, and by the way, who ever is still trying to hang on to a coin that's been sold for a week now, do me a favor and delete it from your set. I just got this 1941-D in the mail today but I've owned it over a week. It's a 1st generation PCGS "Rattler Mercury dime graded MS-66 FB. I don't understand why people hang onto coins they don't own. I would bet big money that there are many here, that have coins in their registered sets, that they don't own any more, and probably a lot of coins that guys
