A FORGOTTEN BOX OF COINS PROVIDES A TRIP THROUGH ASIA

But, Where Did They Come From? Earlier this week, I stumbled upon a long forgotten box of non- US coins. There's nothing valuable here, but the box did contain a nice cross section of the world. They are primarily 20th century coins,1960's and 70's, with a few from the 1940-50 era. The coins, organized by country included: Hong Kong (maybe they will be valuable in the future since these are the obsolete British coinage), Maylasia, Singapore, and Vietnam. The kicker is, "I have absolute

Just a thank you!`

What this group is all about Hello Malcolm, I have never met you in my life, and you took the time to send me a message to say thank you and you appreciate my comments. I tell people all the time they should join the registry, that just reading the journals and hearing what people share with each other makes the membership worth while, and I mean that, I also appreciate you wishing me good luck on my teletrade sales this evening, but I think American Idol took precedence as it was a rather d

Shifting gears...

Updated my Sacagawea MS/SMS set I'm a relative "newbie" to the CS registry sets. I purchased my first slabbed coins a mere 2 years ago or so. Just last October (2010), I decided to complete a certified, slabbed set of uncirculated Sacagawea dollars. I had been collecting (or amassing) the Sacagawea dollars by purchasing a roll of each year and mint mark, along with obtaining the U.S. Mint sets from 2005-2010 to get the SMS (satin) versions. But, instead, I decided to shift gears and obtain

Looking for Book Recommendations

I've been playing around with doing some paper money collecting and need some books. I've got a couple of catalogs but need something more detailed about grading, proper storage and history. Greetings all, It's been a while since my last post, but I'm still here and slowly adding to my coins. I've also been playing around with the idea of starting a paper money collection. I'm a big believer in education first so I need some recommendations on what books give the best information on the s

Coming close to the end of an era

Over 300 coins have been won by you guy in the registy Hi Great People, and thank you , thank you, and my niece says the same thing her and her new kidney are doing great, I am coming to the end of my consignment with teletrade which lasts for 5 sessions under this new program they have, and they have been really great, but you folks in the registry are the real heros here , you all have bought over 300 coins for your sets that were in mine, that is incredible, it says two things, you all know

Another Great Reference for the Library

It truly was the Renaissance of American Coins Friends, Happy to report I just picked up a copy of Roger Burdette's excllent Renaissance of American Coinage, 1905-1908 (red)edition. This book normally retails for about 50.00 but I was able to pick up a copy on Half.Com for less than half that price. I thought the book might be a little thrashed but it is in great condition and I can't wait to pore over every word. I already have Roger's excellent Peace Dollar book and the 1916-1921 (blue)

My first submition to NCG/NGC shipping from abroad

In the past I have had my doubts about submiting coins to TPG?s companys In the past I have had my doubts about submiting coins to TPG?s companys and am what you could call a none beliver in slabed coins. But the more I have dowe into the subject the more good I have found. So after some consideration I decited to join NGC as a elite member and yesterday I shiped the first 10 coins to NCG for conservation and then grading at NGC. I live in Iceland and the thought of these coins getting lost

GETTING CLOSE,BUT YET SO FAR AWAY

ADDED SIX NEW COINS AND UPGRADED TWO IN MY ICELAND REGISTRY SET I added six new coins, one in which I won on ebay for a very fair price considering that it a 1942 5 Aurar in a NGC-MS64RB holder. Its a stuff coin to find that is worth slabbing since all the ones I have ever come across, which is many are always brown and full of contact marks and other not so nice looking things. This coin I have now has a very pleasing blood red color and nice surface condition. The other five coins I've had for

Another Coin for my Slow Growing Commemorative Collection!

And what is up with 1996 Olympics 50c comms??? Hello fellow collectors, Here is my latest addition to my modern comm collection...2004 Lewis and Clark PF 70 UC. It was kind of an oddball puchase. I was looking at upgrading one of my 2001 Buffalos and was going through my "saved" sellers on Ebay and ran across this coin. I liked the photos and placed my highest bid and a few days later...WINNER! I have also been looking to finish up my 50c comms and I thought it would have been done a while

Key Date 1942-S Washington Quarter

Love the coin not happy it replaced another ..... I recently added one very pretty 1942-S Washington Quarter into my existing set and have attached a picture . This is an awesomely toned example , in fact maybe the only toned coin of this date and mint that I have ever seen in hand . Unfortunately my long time nominee for the slot was returned by NGC as cleaned obverse despite being in an ANACS holder with an MS-65 grade . That coin is a bright white flashy example ( no one else including

WOW!

Look at this one... Let's just say this coin is more beautiful than I ever imagined from the pictures I saw before I decided to purchase it. This is the 2009 Russian 3 Ruble Silver coin, 31.1 g in weight of 99.9% pure silver. The design is stunning! I have a 1998 5 Kopek unslabbed coin of the same design, but when you see it blown up to these proportions, the detail is breathtaking. The obverse design is a rendition of the famous scene of St. George slaughtering the dragon. The coin was

Short Set of My Own Parameters

just added coins 25 and 26 to pass the halfway point !! As some of you may know I collect coins with Sailing Ships on them. Most of you who know me or read my journals know that my #1 love is Walker Halves. On a lessewr note I have a few other collections of which I have casually added here and there when I find a deal or get lucky and a low ball bid actually holds up for a win. One of those sets that I build for fun--and definitely not for points, which is obvious by all of the 3 point coin

Over twice the price for the same coin

2011D Early Release Lincoln Penny I just added the 2011D Early Release Lincoln Penny to my registry set. I purchased this coin from a seller that sells on Ebay and advertises here on the NGC website. This seller had this coin for sell on both Ebay and his website. The coin listed on Ebay went for more than double the amount I paid from his website. This just proves once again that you should always do your research when buying coins. With the addition of this penny I have moved into 2nd p

Putting the "Points" Issue to Bed...(long version)

I have touched on many issues concerning our hobby via journal posts here and there always seems to be just "ONE" person who can't seem to read between the lines and grasp the point at hand. Instead they choose to lash out, not by sending me a private email, but here publicly like they are looking for recognition or applause or something??? Warning this post is long and may contain language that some find offensive. And this will be my last comment on this subject. Greetings Collectors, I'm

The Great Debate

Why do we collect? I enjoy the dialog W.K.F. opened that has collectors of all in a very good debate. If one would digest the responses collectively you can conclude that the right answer is everyone?s personal choice. I understand because my registry goal for my 2006 coin collection is to assemble the highest grade coins based on NGC population. In that achievement only one of these competitive registry sets will make me #1 exclusively unless someone enters one of the two PCGS coins that ar

Somewhere I seemed to have missed the POINT!

Collecting or keeping score? I love reading the journals that people post be it a quick snippet of a member?s experience in the world of collecting coins or a doctoral thesis on a topic related to this hobby. Whether I agree or disagree with what is written I can honestly say I have never been offended or upset with anyone?s entry. And so it is with the recent discussion on the point system here in the registry. In fact, the ongoing discussion about how points are assigned has brought a smile

DOES THE REGISTRY DRIVE YOUR COLLECTION, OR TRACK IT?

Just Curious Those who had reasonably developed collections prior to joining the registry had some pre-determined direction to their collecting endeavors. We enter our coins into various regisry categories, then admire or view sorrowfully the results. Those who are starting their collections as they join the registry have a greater challenge to select the "right" or most meaningful collecting categories for themselves: -What do I like? -What registry category can I complete quickly/ eas

My two cents

and then some I must say I totally disagree with those that think modern coins have no value albeit points, rarity, or value. Unless I missed it a long time ago I thought the meaning of collecting was a type of hobby one pursued for enjoyment or investment or both. Again many posts have polarized the description to fit within their meaning. We could go on and on with varying parameters such as Modern vs. Ancient or US coins vs. Foreign coins or Gold vs Silver. What some are saying is very

Rainbow beauty!

A new coin for my custom set I received in the mail on Thursday a new addition to my Horse-themed custom set. It is the 1973 Canadian Silver Dollar commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). I had a chance to snap some pics of it today, and wanted to share them. It turned out to be a beautiful coin, with the reverse having wonderful colors of gold flanked by light greens and blues around the edges. I have two more coins coming soon for this set--one f

I say no about the points I might hear well he doesnt have that many pts r (sour grapes) well my friends It just a small portion of my collection.Collecting to me is sharing what I know and learning what I dont know about this great hobby. For example a few yrs back I bought a MS 70 on the cheap and at the time was very happy with the buy, But after some more research I found out it was from one of those 3rd or 4th teir grading services and this compan

Coin holders beware of fakes. To the discerning eye, a fake or 'non-standard' coin holder or slab is readily apparant. So this journal is probably focused on the new collector who has not yet been fooled by the negative elements of our society. They don't always use the top grade as the one in the picture herein. This holder looks VERY much, too much like the NGC holder. NGS is NOT a recognized guarantor of quality, although the coin therein may be real the grade is much suspect. I bought

41-S was bad choice to use as an Example

I didn't even plan on doing the post on points, but once again I was looking to add a coin that I have owned for over a year, and again found that another here still thinks they own it a year later. Then I saw the multiple sets of coins in the modern era that this person owned, so the ownership, the ranking and the points were all thrown into my face all at once. And then in the confusing aftermath I feel that a side bar note in a previous post was taken out of context, which really doesn't both

Good Points & Bad Points...

I guess there's one like me in most every crowd. Believe me when I say I can't stand strife. But I love a good debate as long as both party's agree that facts are key. And that they want to argue their case with facts & not fantasy. Greetings Collectors, Nothing like a good controversy to take one into the weekend. I have spent most of the entire week raising cash from every available source to put into one pile and to be used to snipe as many silver deals as I have the money and the tim
