COIN STORAGE BOXES

The best way to keep em nice. Friends, I have been putting all my graded coins in PCGS boxes for a while. I used the PCGS grading company for 2 years as I built my previous Morgan set. I had around 12 boxes and stored all the coins in them but the NGC coins kept the tops from closing. In February I purchased a set of Silver Eagles from Tpeters in NGC boxes and when I placed a PCGS coin in it, it was a great fit. I also know that Paradise Mint sells the same boxes at around $5 each. These ar

Wheaties the Coin of Champions!!

Any Scout Leaders out there with some advice? I have 50 rolls of very common Wheat Cents sitting in a strongbox collecting dust and I was thinking that maybe Scouts going for there merit badge might enjoy a roll upon receiving their badge? I would like to contact the local, San Diego Area, Scout troops and see if they would like to accept the rolls for the purpose of passing them on to deserving Scouts. What do you think? I would particularly welcome the opinion of anyone involved in Scou

An Unexpected Cha-ching !!

A nice little score with my ebay gambles... As I've mentioned before I am a bit of an ebay gambler. However now with the current high value of silver the risk is not as much.   For those unfamiliar with my practices--I like to add to my "bullion" holdings by purchasing silver rolls of circulated coins on ebay. Sometimes they are total junky, bent, corroded, heavily worn etc coins that look ready for the smelting pot. Then there are the lots which have some decent coins of album quality and

I Failed To Plan -- Happy Memorial Day

With my interest in the West, am I wrong to not want to make a full set of Buffalo Nickels, Indian Head Cents and Oregon Trail Commeoratives? Hello all, In my last journal entry, you may recall I wrote my financial situation improved somewhat. Even though I haven't received all of the money yet, I'm at the point where I really want to improve my collections. As I've been pondering what sets to make and how I want to proceed with my currency, I came to a stunning revelation. This revelation

Morgan?s are Simply Irresistible to Me

I don?t know what it is, but I am having a hard time breaking away from my Morgan Dollar collection. In my last journal, I opined that it might be a good time to take a break from Morgan Dollars and focus on other areas of my collection. My rational for temporarily shifting gears was an over-heating silver dollar market. What I failed to realize, as another collector reminded me, is that there are still good buys in the silver dollar market. While I was focusing on MS-65 & 66?s, I was unaw

$5.00 Coins

I don?t mean $5.00 gold coins but rather graded coins that can be had for $5.00 or less. I swear my brain works in weird ways maybe it?s because I?m a high school teacher and I spend all day around teenagers. Anyway, school is winding down; the seniors are taking their finals and getting ready for graduation. While the seniors are taking their final exams my room is quiet and my work is caught up so I pull up EBay to see if anything catches my eye. Sure enough, I low ball a couple of bids and

Memorial Day

Thank you. First, I would like to thank all of you who have served, all that currently serve and the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our great country! There is no greater feeling than that of being able to live in a country where you have the freedoms that we are able to enjoy.   On to the collecting, I am slowly chugging away at my Lincoln cent collection. I purchased a 1934 online yesterday and look forward to it coming in and adding it to my set. I think I am

Another new rare Belgian Congo pattern!!!

Unlisted Pattern I have yet been lucky enough to purchase another new very rare unlisted (soon to be listed) pattern from a Belgian auction. Not yet graded, but similar to the 1906 20 Centimes Pattern with unpunched hole in aluminum-bronze that I have listed in Part 2 of my Belgian Congo Collection. This piece is a 1911 5 Cetimes pattern with unpunched hole in aluminum-bronze (or brass). Unreported in Dupriez or Bogaert, 2.53 g, 19 mm. ex. Veilinghuis Eeckhout-Aalst, May 7, 2011, Lot 1

eBay woes

The collusion game between big eBay sellers Simplistically, there are two things that drive the price of products - supply and demand. We all took Economics 101, or have heard of this relationship before. For collectors of certified coins who participate in the registry, these two things boil down to: Supply = certified coin population counts (primarily NGC and PCGS) and Demand = Number of collectors interested in a particular set Simple economics, right? Well, not so fast. There a

IT'S MY DIME AND I'LL TRY IF I WANT TO WHAT WOULD YOU IF THIS HAPPENED TO YOU   LESLIE GOREGreetings Fellow Coin Aficionados: Have you ever bought the same coin twice in three weeks time? It just happened to me. Let me explain, in my dogged pursuit of the elusive 1942 S MS67 FB for my Merc short set, you can go months with out seeing even one but recently there have been three of them listed on eBay. A SILVER DIME ADITION

A Beautiful starter set of dimes Friends, My earlier post boasted of some dimes sent to me before purchase. I received the package Monday and added the 10 Blast White with a small hint of toning on a few to the 1 dime I purchased from Bammer. So now I have a small family of sort--1946 to 1964 Roosevelt dimes resting in their NGC Condo Complex. I do believe that if my friend Todd Peters had not decided to go so far this year with his dimes I would still have only one. When a friend starts to up

WOW part 2

Check out this 1926 Albanian coin! Well, just when I think that I have found my favorite horse-themed coin, I stumble upon another that absolutely takes my breath away. This new coin is exactly that for me. -------------------------- Coin: Albania, 1926R 1 Lek Grade: NGC MS65   The Lek was introduced in 1926 by King Ahmet Zogu as the unit of currency of Albania. It was likely named after Alexander the Great, whose image is shown in bust form on the obverse of this coin, and who is s

Who DOESN'T Like a Good Upgrade?

Always striving for perfection I?m a sucker for a good upgrade. Doesn?t matter what it is. Cars, appliances, clothes, jobs, wives. . .if there?s a better one out there, I want it. And the same holds true for my coin collection, specifically my Type Set. Among my collection was a very nice 1883 No Cents Liberty Head Nickel (NGC MS65) and a 1929-D Standing Liberty Quarter (NGC MS65), both purchased within the last five months. I was happy with both, but not ecstatic. The other classic coins in

Good News

I've turned the corner finanancially, bodes well for my coins & currency. Well, things are lookking up. To make a long story short, cash flow has improved a little. So the result of this is, my coin and currency budget has grown, so I may be able to add a few more sets on the coin side. One thing I do want to do is make a type set, so it has been started. I'm still planning on doing mainly western mints, but now I have more latitude to collect a few other coin interests. What this means

1963 Proof 69 Red Ultra Cameo Lincoln Memorial

Starting on a new registry set Hi everyone. For those of you who follow my journals you know I concentrate mostly on Lincoln pennies. Having worked on my 1959-Date Business Strike Registry Set for the last few years I have reached a point where the last 20 something coins I need to complete this set are out there but I am having difficulty finding them at affordable prices. They are not even the most expensive. I have some feelers out and still have some money to invest from a large group

INSANE!

This current sudden rise in value of high-grade common date dollars is insane and shows no sign of letting up. Several months ago, I began a collection of what I felt were affordable MS-65 & 66 Morgan Dollars. Now my collection of 22 MS-65 & 66 Morgan Dollars is complete and resides as a custom set in ?Gary?s MS-65 & 66 Morgan Gems?. I started this set based on the hope that I could complete it at an average cost of $200/coin. For a while, I was doing pretty well until the value of

PCGS Mechanical Error

Who or what is attributing their coins? I purchased what I thought was a 1823 Broken 3 Capped Bust Half Dollar from Heritage Auction on 3/19/11. The PCGS holder designated this variety on the holder. I listed this coin on ebay. I received two emails through ebay that this coin was not a broken 3 variety. I looked at the coin more closely, and determined it was not this variety. I canceled my auction. I contacted PCGS through email, I was asked to submit a photo of this coin. Several days

VAM COLLECTIONS.

I have always been a big fan of VAMs, mostly out of lack of patience for the high end Morgans and Piece dollars in registry grades. But can any one explain to me...... Why there are several lists to compete in? I look at them in dismay and find that there is a "TOP 100" and a Hit list that includes the "HOT" 50 VAMs and then a "Hit List 40". Who compiles these lists and what determines whether or not they make one or the other lists? And with VAMs being found new every day, isn't there the c

An almost perfect quarter In addition to the MS69 business strike Sacagawea $1 that I wrote about recently, I also added an MS69 business strike National Parks Quarter to my 21st Century Type Set. As of now, it is one of only two MS69 business strike quarters graded by either NGC or PCGS in the National Parks Quarter series (2010-present). Gilbie's 2011-P Olympic Quarter is the only other. The coin features the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in central Oklahoma. The obverse is the cla
