Stuck in Neutral

Dear Dad, no mon, no fun your son... Well, all my funds for adding to my collection are used up. Any funds coming in, will be needed for taxes, ROTH IRA, and SEP IRA. Does anyone know if or how we can buy coins, [registerd coins] and have them in our retirement accounts. This is probably my last year for adding funds to those accounts so it is imperative I stop playing for a few minutes and pay attention to retirement. I am already going into the shakes, has been a month already since I ha

First Submission to NCS

Not sure what to expect... Sent two coins on Modern tier which is a relatively good deal considering grading is included. Sent a really cool 1971-P broadstruck Roosevelt Dime. The unfortunate part is I think it has been cleaned. So, this one is a study in my ability to spot cleaned coins and if by chance they disagree and grade this one, it will be the first FT coin for 71-P graded at NGC. The error in striking was in my favor as the torch on this one is as strong as most of the modern issue

Not Happy today

I dont like to buy Junk Silver Wow what a year makes! In 2010 I ordered my 5 oz America the Beautiful coins from one of the eleven Mint Distributors. I sent my coins to NGC for grading. Out of the coins sent, my lowest grade was a MS67 one was at MS68 and the rest of the 15 coins graded MS69. A few were MS69PL. I was very happy with this outcome. This year I could order these coins from venders who order their coins from the eleven Mint distributors. What a world of difference. Can you say c

My first Submission

Unknown? Nothing to really say. Mailed it off today. Upper & lower mint errors for 2004 Wisconsin quarters. Nervous. I know they won't come back graded high, but still am afraid of those unscrupulous mail people. Should have them back by the 18th or so. Fingers crossed.

Too Many Irons (or in this case, silvers)

I need to teach myself a new discipline... FOCUS! I deleted one of my competitive sets today. I had a sum total of 1 (yes, ONE) MS67 Oklahoma Quarter in it. 20 Points. Just sitting there by itself. I had told myself that I was going to take that path some time ago, but it never happened, and for good reason. My meager budget does not support all of the coins that I am interested in. I allocate $100.00 monthly for my acquisitions, which isn't much when one is chasing high-point coins,

ANTICIPATION

"cause these are the good old days" Fellow Numismaniacs, I'm currently suffering great pangs of anticipation for the 27, yes 27, coins currently in some stage of grading/encapsulating at NGC. Seventeen of those coins were submitted while still an ANA member so there is no ability to track their progress other than to know they are close as it has been about 5 to 6 weeks since confirmed delivery of the coins. The last ten coins were sent under my new NGC membership upgrade so I have already

NOW THIS IS JUST TAUNTING!!!

Again, I'm Underbidder: Again, the Coin Pops Up... This time in a dealer's on-line inventory. On June 2, 2011, I bid on an 1844-O Half Dime, AU58 PCGS/CAC. I engaged a trusted dealer who viewed the coin in-hand. After his "thumbs up", we set our bidding limit. I placed my max bid and waited. I was outbid by one increment. I accepted my fate, since in this instance, I'd bid the max determined by my advisor and me. That's the way it goes. So today, I was flipping through the website of a

THE PEACE'S ARE FINALLY COMING TOGETHER

Auctions You Just Got To Love Them Friends: I had a interesting auction experience this week past. As I am always looking for bargains I bid on lots of coins. I detest paying more than greysheet prices. Thursday I came across a NGC MS65 1926 D Peace dollar FMV on this coin is just shy of a Grand. It had a rating of (2****) an above average eye appeal white coin, which fits my set perfectly. The coin had a reasonable buy it now price, I even thought about it for more than a minute,I have done

Auction Bidding

What's the right price, when am I obsessive and why do I screw up so much? Going along the theme DM Merrill Associates has started, why is that I always get cold feet before and after the auction? Here's a recent saga for me, which repeats all too often... I find a coin that I really need/want and stick it in my favorites/watch list to come back to and bid later in the auction. I recently found a tough coin listed on one of the major auction sites for a set I'm working on. It's a modern co

MY LOST OPPORTUNITY SHOWS UP IN ANOTHER'S REGISTRY SET

The Price I Must Pay For Being The Underbidder. Have you ever missed out on a "great" coin at auction? For most collectors, the answer is "Of course I have!". Have you ever had that same coin show up in another registry set? Well, I just did! I was browsing through another collector's Seated Liberty Half Dime Registry. As I brought up the picture of his 1840 WD specimen, I froze in disbelief. Staring back at me was a coin that I had drooled over, and bid for on April 4, 2007! Here is m

Year of the Horse

A nice new theme set addition I have been slowing down my horse-theme set additions in the past couple weeks, trying to save some money for an upcoming Heritage auction. One addition I couldn't pass up is pictured below. I have been looking at the many "Year of the Horse" coins for the past 2-3 months, but haven't found one in the affordable range until now. I was able to pick up a nice 2002 MS69 Australia Silver Dollar from the Lunar Series. Even though it's graded "MS", these coins have

Peace be with me, Dollar that is!!!!!!!

ARE WE HAVING FUN YET? I AM !!!!! Greetings Collectors, Hoarders and Speculators Silver is down to $33 and change I think I will go buy 10 oz tomorrow. Speaking of silver I have added two frosty whites to my Peace dollar set a 1928 S MS63 and a 1934 D MS64. That secures 60th place out of 700+. Eleven places from being on the first page or in the top 50, which was my goal when I started the rebuild of this set, with six more coins to go the goal will be met sooner than expected. I ju

Honest Abe Arrives in the Nick of Time.

Or at least His Denver version. Hi All, I recevied two brand new 2011-D Lincoln Shield Cents in change today. These are the first I have seen and they were obtained at the McDonald's in Oceanside CA. Seems like the last three yesrs, it takes longer and longer before the current year coinage appears in my change. I have yet to get all the 2009 or 2010 quarters in change. Happy Fourth Everybody. THE NEW "S" MINT ASE

SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW? Just how many wooden indains can you sell? This whole business must be generated by the grading companines. To put a slot in the collections for a coin that is no different than another one has only one purpose and that is to generate revenue. This is really becoming a sorry organization. I would certainly hope that management would do something to up their moral standards. gtg To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

I bet you are tearing your forehead hairs out waiting on your grade evaluations. Hey Bud, It is pretty cool to get together in the middle of the mix. I will be on vacation this week but hope the "LIVE" entrance that you have will be overwhelming when you list those new grades. I am looking forward to climbing over 100,000 points and you are the only passenger in the truck-----GET-R-DONE.   Later Dude---- To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. I just recieved my 2011SSSSS (non SSSSS) ASE

I believe these were trucked in from Pennsylvania Needing the coin for the slot that "NGC" says I have to purchase to actually complete to date. It is a joke that I have 2----2011 American Silver Eagles from 2 mints that are IDENTICAL. And the only people to blame for this is the GRADING COMPANIES we rely on for the best of quality. =NGC & PCGS------ I HOPE THIS SERIES DIES SOON. HAPPY COIN COLLECTING Thanks NGC for including this so-called coin in your set.

It Always Happens...

...just when you get ahead, some problem rears it's ugly head. I think I jinxed myself. Back in May, on the 23rd I think, I wrote a journal entry saying how my financial situation had improved and I had some extra cash to spend on my coin passion. Well wouldn't you know it, something always happens to me to muck up my plans. We've been getting a lot of rain here in southeastern Iowa, and of course, my roof started to leak (although only in one place). Well, I knew this time would come, as my

Fine or MS?

It makes no sense to buy an 1881-CC Morgan Dollar for $305 in Fine condition when I could have a MS-63 for roughly $200 more. Many of you are aware that I am trying to purchase the best Morgan Dollars possible for an average cost of $200 per coin and grading no lower than VG-10. However, there are eight coins in this series that even in grades as low as VG-10, have Fair Market Values of more than $200 each. Among those coins with a FMV of over $200 in VG-10 is the 1881-CC. The 1881-CC with

Haunting the Mailbox

In other words, I have too much free time on my hands if that is possible. Two weeks into summer vacation and I find myself haunting the mailbox for the odd coin I manage to acquire and doing all of the little things I have wanted to do with my coins. For the most part that means getting all of the photos caught up in my registry sets. Slowly but surely, the pictures are coming. But me being me I am not content with simply taking a picture of the slab and posting it. Of course I am still stru

Trying a Different Tack to Spark a Little Interest

Or, how to add some pizazz to a somewhat pedestrian registry set. Hi All, Hope you all enjoyed the first full weekend of Summer. I have been working on my 21st Century Set recently to add photos and descriptions for each coin in the set. In the vast majority of cases, the coin pictured is not the actual coin owned but is a close approximation in terms of date, mintmark, and grade. I have also used the Obverse photo to illustrate some other historical aspect of the coin. For instance my
