A CALL TO LIBERTY!

A Formerly Rejected Series Calls Me Back. I lost interest in Liberty Head Nickels, years ago. In fact, I even wrote about it in a journal article in 2005 (No Accounting For Taste). I sold the few examples that I owned, including a couple of rolls of well-worn coins. However, I've begun experiencing an all too familiar itch of late. NO, not athlete's foot! But that itch of growing interest in another coin series. In recent months, I've re-read Peters and Mohon's, Shield and Liberty Head Nic

Mid Year Progress Update

...still happy on my set choices. 2011 is practically half over so I'd thought I'd look back on the year so far. First, I'm happy with the sets I have right now. The only new one I might add is Mexican 8 Reales minted in Mexico City. Like my Centavo set, if I do make the 8 Reales set, I don't know how finished it will become. But I do love silver so that may make a difference. Secondly, I've almost finished my Ike dollar proof set. I needed 2 to have a full set, and I received the 1977S clad

Another mystery

Don't know much about this one I could not pass up another medal of the "Heraldic Art Medal" series because of its absolutely stunning beauty and its perfect fit into my ever-growing horse themed set. Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to find much information about this set of medals besides this little blurb. "This is from the series of Half-Dollar-sized medals issued from 1959-1979 by the Heraldic Art Company. Founder Bob McNamara sought to fill the void created when the US Mint ce

Is Everyone Stuck

Early Release Label and all In the recent past this subject has been broached more than once. (The Like or Dislike for various "labels" i.e. Early Release and such. So do all the individuals who would not buy a slab with an early release AND collect Mint State ASE not fill the slot that calls for the 2011 ASE from San Fransisco Mint Seems, and correct me if you know different, that the ONLY way you can get a coin in that slot is if you purchase the certified coin that carries the Early Rel

REGISTRY POINTS

WHERE DO YOU STAND TODAY? Hello, Does anyone know what is going on with Registry points? My ranking dropped 11 places today and the total points of one of my Jefferson sets went down by thousands. It would be nice if NGC would at least make an announcement about the events. The Lincolns went up and down and now the Jeffersons are doing the same. Someone must be having fun. Please let me know. gtg

This Is A Keeper

The Mint got it Right for a Change. I just saw the U.S. Mints design for the 9/11 National Medal and I've got to say that I am very pleased. I hope they sellout as the mintage is capped at 2 million and $10.00 of each sold will go to the 9/11 Museum at Ground Zero. I will be buying one tomorrow (when payday hits). I hope you all consider doing the same. God Bless America, Malcolm To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

I LOST A FEW MORGANS THIS WEEK

BUT I GAINED 15 MERCURY DIMES Friends, I made a choice to trade off 4 morgans for a short set of Merc's this week. In the trade three were the highest points morgans I owned but I really wanted the better grades on those coins later. I received the merc's today and not only were they beautiful they were in a NGC box to boot--thanks JimL4004. I could not wait to see them so I opened the box outside the post office which seemed like forever--being careful cutting all the tape seeing the NGC box

Blame it on Alison Krauss

Yes, I'm still here and still spending too much. Hello friends. It's hard to believe it's been more than two months since I wrote a journal entry. The day after my last one, I discovered all the songs of Paper Airplane, the new 'album' from Alison Krauss & Union Station, available on the web, more than a week before the official release. Their music (and some other bluegrass) has become another passion in the past few years. One of the songs made me think that I really need to spend more t

Taking a break

21st Century Type Set -- complete for now... I have been putting a lot of my energy (and expendable income) into completing the best 21st Century Type Set I can. Afters today's addition, I think it will have to rest for a while. My pocketbook insists on it... I'll keep this post short and sweet. Of the four Presidential Dollars released this year, the Ulysses Grant dollar is arguably the most recognizable face and most well known of the four (Andrew Johnson, Rutherford Hayes, and James Ga

My five renewal grades...

Grading coins is addicting - I wish I were rich! The whole process from beginning to end is quite fascinating to me. It's a three step process that heightens my enjoyment of the hobby. 1 - Selecting coins - a lengthy process for me - sometimes 2-3 months to make sure I have the right coins in the submission. 2 - Sending to NGC and awaiting the results - agonizing to say the least!! 3 - Getting them back home to re-inspect, learn from mistakes and revel in success! My recent submission

Set Thoughts and Musings

Believe I've made a decision I can live with. Hi all, First, a belated Happy Father's Day to all the dads. 2 posts ago, I was wondering if I was wrong in not wanting to make a full set of Indian Head Cents, Buffalo Nickels and Oregon Trail Commems. Well, I've made my final answer (decision) now and this is my story and I'm sticking with it. As all of you must know, I'm a western fan, and I'm wanting to stick with mostly western mints. And if you've been watching my sets, you've seen me b

Re:Thanks

Thanks for the Feedback Yes it sure gave me something to think about Thanks a bunch and it looks similar to the pic jxs525 added, but just similar I didnt ask the price cause I was more or less looking again it didnt have a grade it was just slabbed and saying where it was from Wtc and the word Clad which means to me not silver but it sure looked like real ASE.comparig to all the ones I have at home. so I guess I will pass and wait for something thats on my ASE list to pickup Thanks Again L

RE: Anybody have a thought

I hope this helps Hi lanebrad! Trust your first thoughts, I would pass on this one. I'm not an expert but I think PCGS is the only trusted grading co. to grade WTC coins. Also if you come across a PCGS WTC, Make sure it has a numbered grade (NO BU) because I noticed that PCGS BU graded coins has no serial numbers on it and it also has " Collectors Universe" on back. I took a real quick picture of my with my phone to give you an idea to go from " sorry for the blurs "LOL" Happy Collecting!

Loving the Bottom of the Barrell

Or how a Collector of Low Means by No Means can still Thrive. I love to read everyone's journal entries. Especially the journals that are highly informative (Thanks WKF) or the ones that describe a new acquisition. I know we all take real pride in our collection and especially those triumphant times when we've obtained a real gem at a bargain price. Well, I think I got a nice bargain today. As some of you are aware, I recently discovered that the Lincoln Memorial Cent in my 21st century s

HAPPY FATHERS DAY, HERMAN!!!

Break Out The Gold Coins As I've stated in previous journals, Dad was not a numismatist; nor did he have an interest in coins. Dad had an interest in MY coins. He would sit with me and view coins that I brought home, for hours on end. He was genuinely interested because his son was interested. Whenever I shared my gold coins with him, Dad's eyes would light up. He loved the look of gold. Being a child of the depression, Dad didn't have much contact with the precious metal. I could tell t

THE 1955 JEFFERSON D/S VARIETY FS-501

These Low pop Jefferson varieties deserve recognition. There were no San Francisco minted coins that were produced in 1955, apparently thou, there were some Mintmark Dies that the Top Officials at the Mint did not want to scrap-out. So they sent all these Dies to the Denver Mint, stamping again. But this time with the Denver Die,creating alot of confusion to go with it. There were at least (10) Different-Dies identified, however only (1) Die stood-out among all, it being the most prominent D

A Penny For Your Thoughts

What happens when they're gone? Someday the penny will be discontinued. How do you think this will happen? Does the mint or some agency give a time period to trade them in? Do they make them no longer legal to own? They lost money making them, will they want them back to recoup some of the loss? What happens to there collectable value when you can't get your hands on them? What do they do with billions of coins that no longer have a purpose? Should you start collecting the "higher" grades? Lincoln Memorial MIA

A late night session results in the removal of a coin I was adding some pictures and descriptions to my 21st Centry type Set yesterday when I realized that the Lincoln Memorial slot in my set was actually being filled with one of the 2009 Lincoln 200th anniversary cents. I think I know how this occurred and how it was accepted into the set. When I start a new set, I always have a few of the coins already and CHOOSE them from my holdings. When NGC put together the set, the Lincoln Memorial wa

Make Me an Offer

On any or all of the graded coins below Every summer I dump all of the extra coins I pick up during the course of the preceding year. The proceeds go toward (Yes, you guessed it!) my summer coin purchases. If you are interested in any of the following graded coins, I?d be more than interested in entertaining any trade offers or outright offers to purchase. Hoenstly, I'd much rather the coins go to filling holes for the members here because I know people here really appreciate the coins. I typi

Is It Twisted Thinking?

hoping my perspective is not skewed..... I'll keep this one short........ I visited the Stacks-Bowers webpage on Thursday evening when I got home to see if I had won a coin that I had put a healthy bid on. I see 1945-D Walker MS67's here and there, it is not a conditional rarity at MS67. This coin though is not your average 67 ( at least for the "look" that I like in a Walker). Bold strike, satiny luster which pops through some lavender and rose blush fields, and just a bit of rainbow around t
