I'm Still Around

Other hobbies but there's always coins... Well I haven't gone anywhere. I know that I haven't journaled in quite a while but I have still been busy with the hobby and also reading the posts by others. Besides this time of year and the demands on my time by other hobbies--Stanley Cup Playoffs time, opening of Rockfish season in the Bay, getting my early spring veggies in the ground ( snow peas, broccoli, cauliflower etc)..add the stresses of work, family and my first grandbaby ( my beautiful

Adding to my Custom Sets

and furthering my current interests. Hi All, Last week I sent 4 Canadian coins and 4 Japanese coins in for grading. The Canadian coins are 1967 P/L coins 1 Cent thru 25 Cent that I removed from their cello pak and will add to my 1967 Canadian Custom Set. I doubt if I will ever get the $20.00 gold piece but I do love the animal themes on the lower denominations and Canadian coins have had that certain something in the last 50 years that U.S. coins seem to lack. The Japanese coins will go i

Presidents have left

A short stay for a sweet First Day Issue set Friends, Well the presidential dollars sure didn't stick around here very long. I just received the 4 Lincoln coins I purchased from Teletrade and put 2 in the set this morning and by 12:00 they were out the door. Had to download my new Proof Silver Eagles which also came today. It has been a very busy week in coins. Between sales, purchasing, and new purchase options it has been a full time job instead of a hobby.   This month bills are left

Kenner, La Coin Show finds.

Nice time in New Orleans for coins! I'm happy to say I made the spring coin show today, (by the way its on agian tomorrow, sunday 04/09/11 from 10:00am till 4:00pm at 2150 Veterans Memorial Blvd in Kenner for anyone in the area thats interested.), loads of people showed up. Met a NGC resedent there displaying his Roosevelt dimes, man what a nice lot he had. The jest of the subject though is I picked up a 1953D MS65FBL and a 1954D MS65 FBL at very decent prices, how happy I am I cannot expres

For the love of coins...

Rebuilding... I've always had a passion and a fascination with coins; particularly, old US coins. I had a massive collection about 4 years ago that sadly I was forced to sell in its entirety due to health problems which resulted in my being without a job. I am still broken-hearted to this day. It's been near-impossible to rebuild what I had, given how rare some of the items I had were. I had almost every denomination coin ever minted in the US, minus the absolute rarest, of course... and m

1960 Large Date Lincoln Memorial NGC MS67 Red

Good buy from TeleTarde I just added this Lincoln Memorial to my registry set. I bought it from last Sundays TeleTrade auction and paid $230 and after TeleTrade's fee and shipping it came out to $274.50. Not too bad for a coin with a population of 19. Just for laughs, there is a listing on Ebay right now for the same date and grade coin with a starting bid of $2995.00 and a Buy It Now price of $3295.00. Knowledge is a powerful tool when buying and selling coins. I hope everyone has a great

A New Approach to a New Collection

Have to admit it is fun to do Greetings once again my fellow collectors of metal art. I am happy to state I have started another new journey into my newest collection. I have started a collection of Franklin Proofs. This time though I am doing it the raw way. I am purchasing raw Franklin Proofs and submitting them for grading. I plan on doing this for the entire set. I must admit I have never attempted this in the past as I have always relied on slabbed coins to fill my empty slots. Oh,

I'M Not Sure What Makes 1ST Strikes So Valuable...But...

But past history shows they bring the "higher dollars". And facts are a good thing to deal in when it comes to our coins. Check out a couple facts in the journal here. I hope you will find it interesting. Greetings Collectors, It's really refreshing in this current age of scams and rip offs to continually have awesome transactions with those that just several weeks ago, I had no clue even existed. I met a guy on eBay who lives in L.A. and he was interested in procuring some of my silver bars

Nice Package in the mail yesterday

320 Loose German Coins! I had a nice little package waiting on my when I got home yesterday. In order to expand the collection significantly I thought I would pick up a coin lot instead of just single coins. I knew they wouldn't all be gems and that some would be really bad. I purchased a lot of 320 German coins from the Empire through the Third Reich. All are small denomination coins with no silver in them (so far). The coins range from garbage (bent, corroded, etc) to worn out (no dates or

SHORT SET LONG ON GEMS

MORE DIMES? WHAT ELSE!! CHECK IT OUT!! Collectors one and all: Scored two more great Merc?s for the short set, a 1943 P NGC MS 67 FB and a NGC MS66 FB 1945 S. The addition of those two pushed the set in to 15th place. I have three more up grades to go. I need a 42 D, 42 S, and 43 S all in 67 FB. The 1942 S is a tuff coin and will probably take a while to get. I will try to get the Gallery updated hopefully by the weekend if I don?t add any new coins that is.

even though I haven't added any currency yet. Hi all, Yes, I'm happy. First, I need to give thanks to Kerry & Rick. Thank you both for helping me out. I'm happy with the direction my collection is going, even though I haven't purchased any new pieces of currency yet. I had hoped to bid on a couple of items in the just completed Bowers/Stacks auction, but didn't. I believe I've noted before that it seems like currency is slowly rising in price. That's good as far as I'm concerned, as th

At Last a Quiet Sunday Morning!

Coins, Whiskey, and the Weather It?s hard to believe that it?s been a month since I?ve really spent any serious time working with my coins. I haven?t worked my registry sets of which to speak. I haven?t seriously gone looking for any deals. I even skipped the local coin show last month. Oh my interest in collecting isn?t waning; it?s just that sometimes life gets in the way. (That sounded strange.) With the start of High School Baseball Season, my 16 hour days make finding the energy to do muc

Stock Market Crash Again?

How will our coin values do? Friends, Have you been keeping up with all the hype on the value (downfall) of the US dollar. It seems that we will start to see the adjustments of the end of the corp. bail-outs and the falling of US dollar values in May. Along with all that our dollar is fixing to be replaced. I am very glad that I have not invested in any stock to lose next month. I think we are in for a rough finish for the rest of the year. We have heard and read articles on all this sin

START OVER

The Eye Appeal said "You Can Do Better"! Sometime around 2000, I completed a 24 coin Peace Dollar collection, but just didn't like the "look". So, a couple of years later, I sold the set, keeping 5 coins. 2 of those five were purchased in 1976/77. The other 3 were added from 1996-98. The Peace Dollars were/are not an overwhelmingly popular set, and I was clearly not enthused about my collection of these large silver discs. However, I found myself constantly being drawn to these coins. By

Work Paid Off

Star Note Find I don't normally collect currency, but I work at a bank, so when we get in brand new money from the FED, I'll take a look through it for serial numbers, star notes, etc. Yesterday, we got in $1000 in brand new $1's, so this morning, I took a look through them and found three consecutive star notes. The thrill of discovery was definitely there. It is my best find in the last 5 years or so. About 5 years ago, we got in some $5s and I found two with a drop of green ink that s

Number 1!

For now...likely not for long... I upgraded my State Quarter example from an MS68 Iowa quarter to a 2002-P Louisiana quarter, graded MS69 by PCGS. The state quarters prior to the SMS/Satin releases (which started in 2005) are hard to find in MS69, so I thought this was a good purchase. It's not my favorite design of the series, but it's also not my least favorite. It's what I can afford to have as an almost perfect example in my 21st Century Type Set. It's a happy side effect, at least at

Out of Control

Another Baltimore show winds down. I'm in my office on a Saturday morning, avoiding both work and the coin show in Baltimore. More temptation would not be a good idea right now. As of yesterday, I have spent 75% of my annual numismatic "budget" in just three months. Any more immediate discretionary spending will put the family finances in an uncomfortable state. The funny thing is that this comes a couple months after my wife changed jobs, getting 50% higher pay in the process, and as I

I've Just Been Thinking...about a lot of things...

But I'm not gonna share all of it. Just gonna touch on a couple of the more important issues, that affect each and every one of us as collectors of coins, and buyers/sellers of bullion... Greetings Collectors,   First of all, I want to thank all of you that wrote me notes of condolences. I appreciate them more than you know. This whole estate thing when someone passes away is for the birds. I wanted to also clarify that it was my "step-dad" I lost, and not my real father. I lost him in 1986

MORE COINS---MORE COINS---MORE COINS---MORE COINS

Time to fill another collection box. Friends, I have a couple sets 100% and a bunch of sets 1% to 10%. Each set has it's own holding box after it reaches 5 coins or more. I have gone out on a limb and grabbed a nest full of Silver Eagle Proofs. All are 69s and 1 70 yep EARLY RELEASE = the special egg. It will be refreshing to add a new box to my stash. Currently own 2 Silver Eagle proofs but will add 16 or more by the end of the month and get these turkeys looking ready for flight. HAPPY

Use of the Registry

My perception I have been collecting for 50+ years and have enjoyed every day. My prize collection is small cents from 1857 to date. With over 400 coins I am very happy with them as they are although I would love for them to be certified. I feel it is too costly to have them NGC certified which means the value of my set has decreased. If they were certified as a collector I would not care what the point value or the ranking was because I love my set as it is. Yes there are a few coins that I w

Why I Collect Coins and use the Registry

Simply put, I love coin collecting and I use the registry to catalog, organize, and display my collection. I have enjoyed the healthy debate these past few days concerning the registry and the reasons' people participate in it. Many good and valid points have been made, but in the end, what matters is that you are happy with why you participate. For me this debate has caused me to re-evaluate my position and that is a good thing because it keeps me focused and on track. It is said that you

My re-slabs are back!

And they look much better! Hi everyone, Back in February I posted a journal entry about how I "bought the slab and not the coin" involving 2005 MS John Marshall Commemorative Silver $1 in a banged up slab. I just got it back today from NGC and...WOW... what a difference it makes. It's great admiring the coin now that I am not looking at it through a haze of scratches and scuff marks. It turned out to be a very good buy once all the costs were figured in. I also sent in a 1995 WWII $1, 2001
