Anxious and impatient

Pesky Mortgage Too bad the mortgage keeps getting in the way of my collecting "wants". Of course, my wife "wants" to not be kicked out of the house. I have to obey the boss, right? I am anxiously awaiting Monday, when I get paid and can order some new coins. I think I will look to add to my Kennedy collection. The closer I get to completion, the harder it is to find those coins. Oh well. That's the fun of the hunt. Someone mentioned on here a week or so ago, that some sets can be boug

"WOW"

I've been reading The Official RED BOOK A Guide Book of MORGAM SILVER DOLLARS A Complete History and Price Guide 3rd EDITION written by Q. David Bowers I wasn't even aware of Morgan or Peace Dollars until 1961. When the Air Force sent me to Montana. Most of us young airmen didn't care for them. When we received change it was in Silver Dollars. They were bulky and banged against our legs! We didn't look at dates or mint marks. Now I wish i had been more aware! Have a Great Collec

One Wild Ride!

26000+ Registry points and counting Hello all, After collecting slabbed coins for about a year and a half, I finally crossed the 2000 ranking last week and stand at 1951. It's been a wild ride to say the least. I've started sets only to find I like another better. Then after buying more coins than I care to admit (at least to the wife), I start losing interest in favor of yet another set. I'm now working on 4 sets at once - Buffalo Nickels, Colonial Coins & Tokens, Lincoln Wheats an

SUSAN B. ANTHONY'S UPDATE

3 MORE TO GO Well, I've been busy on ebay the last 10 days. I'm down to needing the 79P NR; the 79S; and the 81S. Bought the 80S in MS66, was the only one I saw on there. I'm up to 17th place in the registry, might be able to crack the top 10. As for getting any higher than that, not gonna happen. Some of the coins in MS68 only show a total population of 1...... Mail - it's a beautiful thing!!!

Yesterday was banner mail day. The mail lady brought my most recent addition to my Clad Roosevelt Registry set a 2010 D Business Strike MS 67 FT, 10 rolls of OBW dimes for searching, a few clad proofs for an album set of Roosevelts and Ike $'s I've been working on and a few really nice coins on approval. What an evening it was enjoying the best hobby on the planet! I love seeing those bubble mailers and Priority Mail boxes on the counter when I get home in the evening. It's almost like Chr

currency, raw indian head cent, another photo of a Stack's lot etc. I've been meaning to write this entry for about a week now I guess. I've put it off, it's a lot more fun to be looking at currency auctions at Teletrade and Denly's currency inventory rather than writing a journal. :-) Thanks to Rick's & Kerry's generousity, I'm ready to pull the trigger and place some currency bids this comming week. I hope I can win at least one lot, but we'll have to wait and see. The only downside I

I would've moved into the #10 slot

An obsolete NGC Registry set - Lincoln Cents, 1959-Date, Proofs Now that NGC has split the Lincoln Cents Registry sets into their proper sub-varieties, I have changed my collection over to fit into the proper sets too. This move has eliminated my set of 1959-Date coins. Because I was the first to create my 1959-2008 set, I am currently showing as #1 (which will change as soon as some of the other great sets get changed over). My 2009 set is #1 AND at the top of the list because I was first

200K

I took Texan's Coins' advice The first several coins I obtained for my Seated Liberty Half Dime Registry set were all graded MS66. So I decided to name the set "Route 66", only to find that the name had already been taken. But I knew that I wouldn't be able to afford (or even find) every date & mint mark in 66, so "Route ~66" was the next best thing. Shortly after giving the set that name, I got my first non-66. It's a nice 1841, graded MS67 (see a few journal entries back). But balance ha

A beautiful lady

Great mail day! So the "bargain" that I hinted at last week came in the mail today. I upgraded my 2009-D Satin Finish Native American Dollar! Yes, I know this is a modern coin, but this baby is hard to find. Between NGC and PCGS, there have been 1,162 of these coins graded. A mere 35 have been graded SP69, with none finer. There have been none available on Teletrade, and there are currently no others available on eBay. From about the same number of 2009-P Satin examples graded (1,261

Peace Be with Me

Let Peace Reign Greetings Fellow Coin Lovers: As I anxiously await the out come of a Monday Night Auction, to see if I will win the third one of the five MS66?s that I plan to have in my peace dollar collection. An out of sight 1923 P PCGS blazing white stunner in an OGH. If I win it, it will put me in the top spot that my previous set held the difference being only one third the amount of coins. I?ll let you n know how it turns out. Later JimL4004

1945-San Francisco Jefferson Proof-like War Nickel

ONLY (10) CERTIFIED DURING THE WAR YEARS FROM 1942-1945 These early dated Prooflike Jeffs were very limited, and only certified thru Ngc in a Proof-Like Grade.Pcgs never Certified any. NGC has only one in this grade/yr. There was just a tiny handful (10) total, that were certified during World War Two, from the years 1942-1945 . PS: Heres a stunning photo of this coin that resides in my NGC Custom-Set Collection.   Jim/jb4gpo/ To see old comments for this Journal entry, click

Coinage metals with zinc in focus

Many of us have copper coinage, and it is easy to see, that despite copper's rating as low to moderate chemical activity, most old copper coins are BN or RB, and RD ones are much sought for. With gold or silver coinage, professional conservation can do miracles, that's why we can see specimens looking like they left mint just hours ago and not 100-150 years ago. With copper NCS can surely remove all contaminants but can't reverse the flow of time, and if the coin is brown, it will remain so,

Interesting Idea

For a Pedigree Type Set I was at home last night reading "The Coin Collector's Survival Manual" by Scott A Travers and I got a fun idea for a custom set. As with anything, we reap the benefits of the work done by those before us. Many of the coins we enjoy today were once upon a time ago protected by someone else. We have all read about the giants of Numismatics, such as Louis E Eliasberg, Edward H.R. Green, etc. I thought it would be fun to find and collect a type set made up of coins wi

Come on NGC, is this the best ... Part 2

Still not happy about that rattle but... A reminder of part 1, coin came back slanted in holder with a little rattle to it. See past journal. After thinking about it for a day I knew NGC wouldn't put the token in crooked and desided it most have turned due to the looseness of the token in the slab, the rattle. I started tapping the bottom right corner of the slab on a table and after about a thousand taps, okay, maybe a hundred, I noticed that it had move a bit, not much, but some. I got me a

Coin photography woes

The 6th time is a charm. About a month ago I bought a little point and shoot camera with macro photography capabilities (a macro setting). More importantly, I purchased a fairly nice copy stand that's about 18" x 24" and has a telescoping camera mount that can shoot from distances of about 10" through 24". The camera and the copy stand cost me about $200 combined. The camera is a 12 Megapixel super compact little thing...I can't believe how tiny these things keep getting. I found it on sal

The Newest Lincoln Cent Appears

I have also received a Little Rock Quarter from 2010 but have yet to see the following quarters from 2010 and 2011 in change: Yosemite Yellowstone Grand Canyon Mount Hood Gettysburg Like a lot of the early issues of the Statehood Quarter set, I expect they will appear in large numbers in a couple of years as people realize there small hoar

Come on NGC, this is the best you can do?

You didn't get it right the first time and this time either. I had this "Conder" token graded by NGC several years ago and when it came back they had put the obverse to the back of the slab. Not really a big deal but I did write them a small email about it and never heard back from them. I recently purchased two more "Conders" from ebay and the slabs were so scuffed up you could barely see the token. I packaged up 5 token for reslabing including the backwards token and sent them off. Well, the
