Another Excellent Book in the "Official Red Book" Series

A Guide Book of Peace Dollars This wonderful book by Roger Burdette with Barry Lovvorn is more history than price guide. Those of you who know 3-Part Renaissance of American Coinage series will recognize Mr. Brudette's name and will appreciate the depth of research he puts into his works. Since the Peace Dollar series is relatively short, Mr. Burdette is able to devote much more of the book, than usual, to the history of the coin and the wonderful story of its sculptor, Mr. Anthony De Fr

It's back again!

There is a coin God afterall? Hello everyone, As some of you know, a Presidential set of mine had moved from it's original spot. I asked NGC to look into it as I had entered the coins all on the same date. Well, it took a little time, but alas, my set is back where it started. I'd like to thank J. Garcia and those responsible for investigating and repairing this modification. I am happy to see my set back, and still glad that all of us can work things out. I never expected to achieve a

A Coin Dealer With Integrity

Who's helped me build my collection by buying my collections. As I have transitioned my collection from raw accumulation to pristine slabs, one of the most helpful dealers has been Bill Hussey of Fort Lauderdale, FL. I found Bill via an ad in the back of Numismatic News promising to buy any/all foreign coins at fair prices. Now, never having dealt with Bill, I monitored his continuing ads, googled his business name, and generally did as much as possible to determine his legitimacy. The f

Coin Designs

Is the stagnation political? I've read over the years in Coin World many stories regarding political influence over coin design. Case in point; the demand from a State of to keep the home of Thomas Jefferson on the reverse of the nickel coin because it is a tourst attraction in that state. I am really curious about how much political influence really goes on in stiffling the creativity of coin design. I applaud the new obverse designs of the nickle, the reverse of the Cent and the new qu

RE> MODERN COMMEMORATIVES

Thanks for the answers to my latest quest. I did not expect more than 3 or 4 to chime in. I did save a list of all the answers. I was sure to get the San Francisco Mint and the Bald Eagle but with a list of the first coin listed by each answer I will now have 8 different coins to search for making it easier than 2. Thanks to all of you. SIX MILE RICK

Things that make you go hmmmm

Highway robbery or really a modern rarity? After much patience, I finally got my hands on a 2009-D Business Strike Sacagawea (Native American) Dollar graded MS67. Surprisingly, this modern issue is hard to find in this grade and particularly from the Denver mint. The last one to sell on Teletrade went for $130 back in September 2010 (after the buyer?s fee, $150). There have been two recently posted for auction on Teletrade, but they are opening at $150, and they have cycled through at leas

That's why I sold my Gold bullion!

Offered melt prices at a coin show! In reply to Sellers Beware- 2 summers ago I took my $5 PCGS graded Gold Buffalos (70's) to a coin show in Colorado Springs. I was offered $150 for each of the 1/10's. I laughed at them! I went home and listed them on eBay and sold them for $700+ in days.   Then I re-invested and bought graded old gold coins! I had $10, and $25 versions too, which also sold for a hefty profit. I claim my sales with the IRS every years too! You were being fed a meal o

Sellers Beware

Offered $135 for a NGC PF70UC 2008 $5 Gold Buffalo That offer of $135 for a 2008 NGC PF70UC Buffalo came from a coin dealer in Fresno. He told me he'd give me the current gold price. I said, Wait this is an NGC PF70UC, and this coin is the only year a fractional Buffalo was minted. It's selling for $700-$800 dollars on EBay. His answer was if you want Ebay prices sell it there. I'd offer more for a PCGS graded coin because they grade tougher. I replied, They grade softer if you are a perferred

I bought the slab...not the coin!

...a different way to add a coin to my collection. Hi everyone, It's been awhile since I posted anything here or bought a coin. Most of my time over that last few weeks was spent organizing my collection of Star Trek themed Starship Christmas ornaments. Only need 2 more to finish up that collection. One I need is the first year that the series was introduced so that is not going to be cheap. When my attention came back to coins, I was looking for 2005 John Marshall MS70 commemorative. I ca

MODERN COMMEMORATIVES

Which would be the best picks? Friends, I am working on a Type set that needs only 1 modern issue comm. coin in it. I would like to put the best looking detail and artistry coin I can purchase. The set will go to my grandchildren and I don't want a dog coin in that slot. The slot is for $1 coin but the 50c MS70 carries more points. I do not know which coins of the modern commemorative set are the top picks for their overall beauty but I figured some of you that have full sets or close could

Why the U.S. Mint has lost my business

and taught me a lesson about loyalty. For many years, starting in 1969 when my Dad ordered me my first proof set, I have been a loyal customer of the U.S. Mint accumulating proof sets, mint sets, Bicentennial 3 Coin sets, and just about every other numismatic product they made available. Much of this was motivated by the desire for completeness but some of this was also motivated by a sense that my purchases from the Mint would be, somehow, appreciated and eventually rewarded with great coina

NEW LINCOLN SETS

I wish NGC would just update the hundred of sets they have now before creating new ones! I've been asking for months for NGC to update sets. They haven't update the hundred of set for 2010 yet! Here it is FEBRUARY 2011 and they are creating new sets without finishing the old sets! It must be a case of WHO you Know? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. My first post

Buried in snow, so why not scribble a few thoughts... I have been a regular reader of the journals for quite a few months now, so I thought I'd try my hand at a brief post and share a picture. To kick off the start of 2011, I decided to start putting together a non-proof, non-gold 20th Century Type Set. I have no intent on the set being more competitive than possibly top 20, as it is well out of my budget to compete with the sets containing MS67FH quarters and strictly top-pop coins! Mores

NEW LINCOLN CENT REGISTRY SETS

They've added a couple. I asked for NGC to add a Registry Set for the 2009 cents, and a set for the new Union Shield cents. It was done in a couple of hours.......WOW, what fast work. Thanks. I've added my coins to these new sets, and guess what? I'm #1 in both sets. I've also asked that another set for Lincoln Memorial Cents be added to the Registry. You know - the ones dated 1959 to 2008? They're done now, so they should have a set of their own. Don't you think? To see old comments

Early American Copper Cents and Other Musings

The Agony and Ecstasy look and not acquiring I can?t even begin to tell you how many pictures of Early American Cents I?ve looked at in the last few weeks. Unfortunately, looking is all I?ve been able to do. Even in good condition all of the early coins have been out of my reach this month. Compounding the situation is I?m still not sure exactly at what I?m looking. The number of varieties is a bit overwhelming. Of course, that hasn?t deterred me from looking. German Collection

So Many varieties... I've been filling in some of the gaps on my Half Mark collection while trying to expand into the other areas of German Coins. I knew it was a big field to work in due to the number of mintages and the long history but I really had no idea how big, or expensive. I recently picked up the Standard Catalog of German Coins 1501-Present. It is at least as big as the standard catalog of World Coins from 1901-2000. What an incredible variety of coins to peruse.
