Closing in On Number 1

The top is finally within reach Hi everyone. Tonight I added 3 new additions to my 1959-Present Lincoln Memorial Business Strike Registry set and it finally puts the goal of #1 within reach. I added a 1964D MS67RD, 1982D Large Date Zinc MS68RD and a 1982D Small Date Zinc MS68RD Lincolns to my set. Thanks Mike for allowing me to add these 3 new beauties to my set. My next big purchase which if I find for the right price will be the 1983 DDR MS68RD Lincoln. With that purchase alone it would

UGH!!!

My coins made it to quality control! I've been checking almost every day and now they are in quality control. Unfortunately, the grades aren't up yet. For those of you who submit coins regularly, I don't know how you can stand this wait. Hopefully within the next day or so, I'll know how they did. I'll keep you posted.   Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

finally joined the ranks

First Certified Morgan I have seen the Light! I finally gave up on my local coin shop here because he doesnt really sell certified Morgans, not a good selection at least. It seemed like everytime i bought a raw Morgan i would have something pointed out to me that i couldnt see. I was getting tired of it! Especially after my most recent coin i bought, some "red flags" had been brought to my attention, and when i brought it to HIS attention, HE TOLD ME I WAS BEING PARANOID! Then he wouldnt even

3 Newps

Past the 50 mark Tonight I was able to take some photos of my most recent additions to my horse-themed set. Below you will see the three most recent additions. The first is a 10 cent piece from 1953 Spain. This coin was minted during a historically interesting period in Spain, and I hope to write some details in the coin description very soon. The 2nd is the reverse of a 1961 Heraldic Art Medal commemorating the Centennial of the Statehood of Kansas. This one has particular meaning to

Gary?s Coins of the Month

This post is the first of what I hope will be a monthly editorial on various coins from within my collection. When I was a young lad, I spent countless hours combing through the ?Redbook of United States Coins? dreaming of the coins I wanted to collect. Two of many coins I dreamed of owning were the type ?1? and type ?2? $4 gold ?Stella?s? (Stella is the Latin word for star). Endearing me to both of these coins is the fact that they are an oddity, struck in gold, and are rare. The fact that th

Will the 2011-P Gettysburg Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin come error free unlike the Mount Hood

Returned my Mount Hood and ordered the 2011-P Gettysburg Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin Just order the 2011-P Gettysburg Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. I am hoping that it will come nick free. My last order (twice), from the US Mint, Mount Hood 5 ounce silver coin had nicks on them. Returned one and using the money for it to buy the Gettysburg coin. I decided to not send my 2010 to collection to NGC because of the flaw Mount Hood. So I will search and buy, when I get the funds, NGC

Send Them Out to be Certified, or Keep-em OGP?

Just received a bunch of 2011-W Burnished Silver Eagles. My dilema: Just in, Fresh from the Mint, 10 Burnished Silver Eagles, pretty and shiney, not a mark on any of them (except for the "W"). They are (almost)sure to each grade a 70, along with the Early Release distinction. What is the dilema? With a Unit cost from the Mint at $60.45(x10) plus the $4.95(.495 per coin) S/H. Sending them to NGC will cost about another average $18 per coin for Grading and Round-Trip S/H/I. This will give m

missing 1998 mint set

1998 doubled Kennedy "D" A short time after showing my discovery of the Kennedy with three extra "D" strikes between the 9 and 9 and doubling of the date and doubling of "IN GOD WE TRUST" the half dollar was switched with a clean coin. A quick examination with my 10 loupe of all 5 of my sets found no trace of the crown jewel of my meager collection. This was at the end of August. Just this week (9/18) I realized this same scenario was a repeat of my early spring discovery of my 1964 Quarter th

I looked this thing up and down for some reason NOT to buy it. Well after negotiations, i was able to pick it up for a great price! Cannot remember the last time this happened

returned in change Greetings once more my friends of the board. I'm sitting here getting caught up with all the latest journals and thought I would write one myself. First up is I went to Menards to return something I had purchased the week before and in the refund money was a buffalo nickel. I cannot tell you when the last time I received one of these in change. Oh it wasn't a good one by the way. Worn down so much there was no date on it. But cool none the less to get one. Was check

Interesting Day

Ups and Downs My commute home took about an hour and a half longer than normal, due to an accident downtown. But on the bright side, I found a great radar $1 note at work. The serial number is E07077070E. It's seen its share of use, but overall, it isn't too bad. Not only is it a fun find, but my wife and I were married July 7, 2007, so it's sort of like a wedding note. Tomorrow, I hope to receive the 1965 and 1966 SMS Proofs that I ordered on Saturday. Still working on the Kennedy set

just called 3 more coming.

Don't believe it I had been called to let me know that the 3 silver eagle holders I had been waiting for were on their way. I had even sent photos of the 3 I was in need of. Now this is a very reputable coin supplier, I guess you know the rest of the story. They came today and yep you are right, they all were WRONG!!!! What the H-E- double toothpicks does it take to get what you ordered, especially when you send them pics and they said they had them on hand? HELP!!!!!! I am bonkers over

Sold some Gold

And gained some ground I had two old gold rings and a broken gold bracelet burning a hole in my pocket this past Friday so I decided to go to my favorite coin dealer, California Numismatic Funding, and see what they were worth. After the weigh-in, I had a grand total of 426.00 in credit so I promptly bought a CT and a Lexington-Concord half for my commemorative type set. Very pleased with both and I still had 62.00 in my pcoket when I departed. I know there's an extra wedding band (long

Just got called and 3 more are coming. I enjoyed the replies I got on my first journal. I collect or enjoyment of getting something different. I know silver eagles are only worth what the particular day brings, but getting a complete set of different labels is a challenge and, fun. Yep, it's expensive sometimes, but I am getting older and it helps me pass my days. I guess it is like some who collect comic books, certain issues are rare, but to have an entire volumn is great. I hope you ca

Half Way There

No, I am not trying to copy a post by another Society member, it just so happens that I have reached that very important milestone in my Morgan Dollar collection. Greetings everyone, a year ago I started a collection of Morgan Dollars based on the New Orleans Mint. After I finished that set one thing lead to another and now a year later I am halfway to completing the entire set. If in the last year, you would have told me I would be where I am today, I would have said you?re nuts. The sheer lo

ATTENDED A COIN SHOW THIS WEEK....

...And I Liked It!!! Last month, I wrote a journal entry about not liking coin shows- I get overwhelmed by the volume of coins. This week, I ventured to the Whitman Philadelphia Show, and was pleasantly surprised that I had a great time! I carried a list of 6 or 7 dealer locations to give me some focus vs. just wandering aimlessly around the hall. This was a wise move. So, this is what I did : -Stopped by the CRO table and told them how much I appreciate their road reports: even if I h
