1 MORE QUESTION

I am still new at this, compared to alot of you guys/gals, so bare with me.... I have seen alot of certified AU Morgans from the 1884-S series. Mainly because i have been researching to see if i need to certify my coin, see prior post, or buy an already certified one for my Morgan Date set. Anyway, what exactly do TPG's look for in different levels of AU? I only ask this because i have seen some AU58's that look no better then my 50's. I have also seen some 53's or 55's that easily look 58

NGC ReGrade Vs. Crack-Out: What Works Best?

How Do I Get the Best Result for a Coin in an old NGC Holder? I have a number of nice coins in older NGC holders, some in very old holders. I can submit the coins to NGC using their ReGrade service. Does this work? Has anyone had success? Do I have a better chance with coins in very old NGC holders? The higher risk is to Crack-Out the coins and resubmit them to NGC for grading. The downside is always the potential lower grade. Any suggestions? To see old comments for this Journal entry, clic

25th Anniversary SAE Grading results?

PF70? PF69? Have any Collectors Society members received a grading report from their 25th anniversary sets? The population report for the regular issue proof 2011 SAE's shows about 70% were graded PF70UC. I'm wondering if this trend is holding true for the 25th Anniversary sets. My five sets arrived in Sarasota yesterday so I'm not expecting a grade report before early December. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

NGC MS67RD 1968S Lincoln Memorial

Adding a few more to the set Hi everyone. Today I added this nice NGC MS67RD 1968S Lincoln Memorial to my registry sets and I also added a NGC M67RD 1970D as well. These 2 coins list for a little over $800 NumiMedia value and picked them up for a little less than half list value. Trying to fill in a few more spots in time for the NGC Registry Awards. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving next week and as always, thanks for looking and Happy Collecting To see old comments for this J

My Worst Purchase Ever

Via QVC and the Nuestra Senora De Atocha Friends, I know we have all made purchases in the numismatic realm that we later regretted and I hope my sad tale makes you feel much better about your particular anguish. Sometime during the late 80's, while my collecting was mostly focused on NCLT foreign coins, I was watching those wonderful hucksters on QVC and became very interested when they started marketing an actual silver ingot from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha treasure ship. This ship ha

Wondering where some of those Anniversary Sets went to?

Hundreds of sets?? Here an email I just received from ParadiseMint: 2011 American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Sets   This is the set that sold out in approx 5 hours at the US Mint. The mintage was half of the 2006 20th Anniversary Sets. While we have hundreds of sets coming in or at NGC. We do still expect to sell out quickly so don't delay.   Hundreds??? Hmmm...talk about abuse and lack of any consideration over greed and sheer profit! They are selling raw sets for over $100

1 of a kind!

new addition to my Morgans i just received my coin from Heritage. i know i paid too much for it! If i am reading it correctly, NGC's COin Explorer has it as a population of 1. If im wrong, please correct me. 1879-S MS64+ with * designation as well. I dont know why but i had to have this for my Morgan dollar, San Fran date set. I have become obsessive over this set! Its unhealthy! Anyone know what i mean? I also snagged a NGC 1896-S XF45 Morgan off of ebay for an average price. At least fo

I got a 25th Anniversary Set Cheap.

Paid a little more than the mint I was looking through ebay to set what the sets ended up selling for. Low and behold I ssw this set selling for $350.00 and still in the mint shipping packaging and he also is giving a 2011-s ase with to the winning bidder. Finnally found someone who is't ripping people off. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

When I'm 64, or 63, or 67...

Someone might make a killing on this one. With Heritage's next auction available for on-line bidding, I was just looking more seriously at a coin I had noted when the sale was in "Coming Soon" status. Although I'm concentrating on half dimes these days, I'm still looking at large cents and other odds and ends. In the upcoming sale is an 1848 large cent, NGC graded MS67BN. I'm considering it as a potential upgrade to my 66BN. The lot description ends with some provenance information. The fina

Preferred mailing address?

UPS/FedEx or USPS for anniversary sets I need the building address for NGC to submit my one set of the Anniversary set. I would rather use UPS for this submission than the Postal Service since is fairly large. What has everyone been using for a carrier? An address would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Keith To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Wrong Target!

It is not the coins I am boycotting ... To all of you who saw my rant about the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle sets, I stand corrected. As I had made clear in my post, I was talking mostly about the unnamed coin dealers who have cornered the market in an attempt to gouge the collectors. They are the ones I am boycotting :-) Of course! I do not have anything against the coins themselves. I may get them if I can find some at a reasonable price. If not, I will live without them. And thank al

Is there a gorilla war going on against NGC similar to what happened to ANACS?

Businesses will do whatever it takes to succeed. Let's first go over a little history. The first important grading standard was Brown & Dunn, that was followed by Photograde and then the American Numismatic Society published its grading standards. Overall these three standards were very comparable (some could argue that there were inconsistencies). Anyway the ANA grading reference has become "THE" grading standard for U.S. coins. So when the ANA formed the first major 3rd party grading

I need some help here posting journal entries

Maybe it is just my age and not being able to understand what to do. So far I have posted about five Journal entries. In all cases there was no option for readers to respond at the bottom of my post. Some readers went out their way to send comments via e-mails. This was very nice of them but I don't understand why the option to respond does not appear at the bottom of my post. I did e-mail NGC and ask for help and I thought I followed their instructions with my last post but guess what --

Be creative when acquiring 25th Silver Anniversary Eagles

No sour grapes here, I did the math I knew that 100,000 sets divided by 5 sets per household was only 20,000 purchasers. Dont say your boycotting the 25th SAE set You might as well say your boycotting the 10th Anniversary Set. Here what I did to get my sets. In my opinion we as collectors need to be smart and persistent, I have an order from the mint and I know the "web site" never crashed. We cant make the coin company's in Florida act responsible, it's greed. But I have to say they were sma

I am boycotting the 25th Anniversary Set

Following up on Amarillo's most recent post... Well! I am in agreement with Amarillo's post. What it did not catch is that the same company was offering these sets ungraded for that ridiculous price. They also have MS/PF 69s for quadruple the issue price and MS/PF 70s for 10 times the issue price (yes 10 times, $3,0000). I am sure the ungraded sets they offer for over 3 times the issue price is the ones that they did not think would even make MS/PF 69s by NGC. Not to mention that the same

Submitting Sets to NGC

Valid Submission? I read a journal entry earlier today that stated " when submitting the 25th Anniversary set to NGC, you must list each coin, from each set, seperately on the form". There are 25 coins in my 5 sets and only twenty lines on the form. It doesn't make sense to me to have a quantity column if this is the case. I listed the 5 different coins in the sets and then entered a 5 in the quantity box to the left of each variety. Is this a valid submission or is NGC going to kick these

A small mildstone in my life with NGC

4 years in the making and getting serious with my coin collection. I started just like many collectors in here. I had the whitman book and went through hours of of a certain coins to find to correct years and mintmarks. It was fun and kept me busy. As I grew older in my teens I started to go to coin shows and I was happy to buy a wore out coin for a cheap. Most coins I bought then were fron $1.00 to $3.50. I thought at the time I was a great collector. In my 20's I got a little more serious. I

key aquirement Hello fellow NGCer's. Call me lucky or maybe I was due for something good to happen. I got confirmation on a ms69/pf69 25th anniv. ngc certified set, and at a shockingly good price. But that's not all, they through in a ms70/pf70 set as well but at regular price. This will help tremendously toward my goal of achieving a complete set of ms69 and ms70 holders with the different labels. I know many of you scoff at me for this, but 10 or 15 yrs from now maybe my handing this do
