Cleaning coins

I hear ketchup, salsa or silver cleaner are good for cleaning coins... As a kid i loved collecing pennies for my book and i used to soak the out of them in hot sauce or ketchup. Now that i am an adult and realize that is a terrible idea, since it ruins the coin. i am curious what is a safe product to use if you want to clean your coins? My Last Post about the 25th Anniv. Sets

A Perfect Return(Blown by One) That day in October was such a pain, but I managed to get the order in by a little after 1pm. Why I had to wait a month to get my order home is beyond me. But the wait didnt cause too much damage- Its that bit of stress that keeps our blood pumping. This was the result that I found today(11/29)when I checked on my order. I was So so close! Covering several subjects

A little of this and little of that Greetings one more time my fellow purveyors of the coin. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and was able to make it through the day without the old, one notch belt release or elastic waist band dance. Have enjoyed reading all the recent journals and the subjects have been interesting. I recently have had a new safe installed and after researching various desiccants found one I thought I would share. It is the newest kind in that it does not use

Curse the US Post Office

Sitting on the docks, not by the bay Here we go again, I have a box of 5 sets of the 25th Anniversary Sets SEALED sitting at the Sorting Facility at Sandston, VA since 11/19. Just missed early release. My patience with the US Mail has gone out the window. Tomorrow I am filing a complaint with the head knocker at USPS in DC. I guess I will have to rive 100 miles to get the darn box. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

NGC Submission Delayed!!

I think there are too many SAEs in the pipeline. Hi All, I was thinking about submitting one last group of coins to NGC before the end of the year. But I think I'll wait until the glut of 25th Anniversary sets makes it through the pipeline. When I say last, I mean LAST, as I am down to a very small group of raw coins that seem to be worthy of the extra expense (vice simply selling them to convert into already graded coins). The lot will consist of some Silver Ikes, Some MS Mercury Dime

Add another collector?

Indian Head cent sparks interest Dear Journal & Friends, I have often tried, without success, to get my son interested in coin collecting. Sadly he took the grandchild to see his in-laws in Washington but we had other family visiting from California with us for the holiday. As it happened, my nephew asked me about coin collecting. Well, I was so pleased and surprised I can't tell you ,we talked for hours about collecting coins. As we got more into it his brother was drawn into our conver

Reining in the herd...

Updating all of the information in the horse set is a LOT of work! It has been quite some time since I have written a journal. This is for a number of reasons, but needless to say I have continued to add a few coins to my horse-themed set. Besides a few new additions, I have been systematically updating the coin descriptions and compiling the coin composite photographs and the accompanying historical photos. The past three days have been particularly fruitful for this task, as I have been j

Will be an interesting week

Started out Sunday with a late lunch. Friends, Sitting in J.Peters parking lot Sunday and Kamakazy pulls up in his car and parks next to us. Hopping out of the car towards me leaving the door open "here hold this" and back to his car. Ahhh, The famous sequential brown label 25th Aniv. 70s set. That would be the first set I have held in hand. He pulls out his black coin holder case, locks up the car and we head in for a bite. I had my wife Glenda with me and togeather we had a enjoyable meal

Obscured Sets

Should obscured sets be disqualified from competition? OK, so, I am playing poker with this guy and we go through the whole thing of betting, gimme two cards, raise, etc... But when it comes down to laying down the cards, he refuses. How can you play with someone that won't show their hand? How is it possible to compete with a person like that? To top it off, what's the point of posting your set if you aren't going to let anyone but the judges look at it? It's all very confusing to

Yet Another Anniversary But Not for the SAE, Thank Goodness

The time has just melted away. Oh my gosh, where has the time gone? It was two years ago when I first found the Collectors Society and in about two weeks I will have been a paying member for 2 years. It has been close to two months since I last posted a journal. Now, Thanksgiving has slipped by us (I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving) and Christmas is right around the corner. If time is money, then I should be a rich man! As usual, I continue to struggle with budget constraints, probabl

Obverse or Reverse?

Take 2 I had intended my previous journal entry to be open for discussion on the Chat Boards, but despite my checking the appropriate boxes, the link doesn't seem to appear. I had some cross-site scripting disabled which may be the cause of the problem. That is now enabled, but the only way I know to test it is with another journal post, so here it is. The attached image is of the other side of the AU55 coin shown previously. Responses to my previous journal post are welcome here, assumin

A Couple Modern Commemoratives at a Great Price!

Added 3 in the last couple days. Hi everybody, Over the last couple days I received 3 new Commemoratives to add to my collection. My first was an 2004 EDISON graded PF70UC. This is my first commemorative that has a point value over 1000. I don't follow my ranking that much but I did notice quite a jump when that coin was put into my inventory. My other 2 coins are the 2002 OLYMPICS grade MS70 and PF70UC. I ran across these 2 coins on Ebay for a BIN price of $190! Quite a bit under FMV. Nee

Obverse or Reverse?

It's not always obvious. Which side are you on? For most U.S. coins, it's fairly easy to determine which side of the coin is the obverse. For others though, this designation isn't quite so obvious. This is particularly true for the entire U.S./Philippine series minted from 1903 through 1945. Which is the obverse, the date side or the figure side? This has long been a hot topic of discussion in this niche collecting community. A very interesting paper on this topic was presented by Kennet

CONDER PROOF TOKEN

MY FIRST CONDER PROOF Well it arrived today in the mail from a dealer in high end coins that I had never purchased from before. While looking on line for Conder Tokens I ran across this Proof 64 white metal. While I normally collect MS Conder Tokens in copper, this Proof white metal piece was just too nice to say no to...See for yourself. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Old U.S. Marine Starting to Get Serious in Collecting U.S. Coins

I am starting my new adventure after spending twenty years in U.S. Marine Corps; seven years of advance college studies and spending the past ten years as a self-published author & researcher on southeastern North Carolina (USA) history. As with many coin collectors I have been intriqued by learning about our old coins since I was a young child. It has only been recently that I have had a chance to "re-invent" my life and start the adventure of collecting coins. I have already learned,
