This is not a real coin: How often have we heard that?

1799 coin located. Original owner did not know if it was real or fake. For the $$$, friendship and future purchases; the coin became mine. A consignment shop owner, who I have know for nearly twenty years, had a series of old coins for sale. Since I am new at coin collecting he started to talk about a coin that his late father had, dating 1799. Being new and excited to own an old coin, I was eager to have it, so I did. Before the final sell, my friend was adiment that the coin, which was

A Major Mint Set Mystery from the 1960's

Was it a trial or was it some kind of shenanigans. Friends, Found a very intersting article about the 1964, yes 1964, Special Mint Set on the Coin World site. Just goes to show you that this hobby, even after 45 years is still able to spring a surprise or two on a fairly regular basis. Read and enjoy. http://www.coinworld.com/articles/1964-sms-coins-are-enigmatic/ Later, Malcolm

What does MS6FS mean?

I am trying to grade my nickels; but i do not know what MS6FS means? I am looking through the price guide trying to figure out the worth of my nickels and I keep coming across the MS6FS. What does that mean and how do I know if I have an MS6FS nickel? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Money Grows on the Family Tree

Who would have thought that there was a tie to my coin collecting and my wife's genealogy? I love Christmas. It seems like I always come up with some screwy ideas for presents. As luck would have it, I was looking around the U.S. Mint web site looking to pick up the odd mint issues I haven't been able to afford during the rest of the year. (Christmas is always a good excuse to treat myself and fill in the most recent holes in my sets.) Anyway, while I'm not a big fan of the Presidential Dollar

and smallest to boot. I started collecting coins in 1968 when a bunch of my friends, who were Boy Scouts, started collecting to earn their merit badges. Suffice it to say, coin collecting soon captivated me and has had me in her iron (copper, silver, nickel, and gold) grip ever since. Sometime during the early 70's Coins magazine, I believe, offered a free 1967 Canadian Dollar with each new subscription. That was incentive enough for a young collector to quit buying newstands issues and

My Brief Time at the Baltimore Show

I parted with 4 figures, but brought nothing home. Wow, it's already been two weeks since the Baltimore show. My wife (especially) and I have been sick, and I didn't do much at the show, so the motivation to write about it has been low. I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. First up, I had just gotten another pricey coin from the Heritage Beverly Hills auction, and really had to resolve to buy nothing at the Baltimore show and auction. It helped that I had no significant interest in anythi

Microscope (Loop) technology

I'll soon be trying this! For all of the eyeball loop enthusiasts here in our world, there just may be a better way to examine coins. My wife recently ordered a SkyMall catalog (those found behind the seats in airplanes) and it had an add it from the Hammacher Schlemmer store. Check out this link: http://www.hammacher.com/Product/78340?promo=search I'll be ordering mine soon! Happy Holidays and good luck for those in the hunt for a title in this year's coin races! Michael

What happens if ...

Returned 25th Anniversary SAE sets These late coming 25th Anniversary SAE sets makes me wonder. What do you think the U.S. Mint would do with returned 25th Anniversary SAE sets?? Sets that the original buyer bought, opened the boxes and saw the poor quality and returned them. Would the U.S. Mint repackaging them and resell them again?? This might be a buyer be aware!! I hope sure hope not but just wondering is all. Keith Stevens To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here

2004-P Handshake/Peace Jefferson Nickel

The Jefferson Handshake! Thomas Jefferson probably didn't realize it at the time that signing/purchasing the Lousiana agreement with France was one of the largest land deals in history. Amazing was the fact' was how he got this much land for so little cost. Nevertheless'(swinging this' land agreement) was Jeffersons greatest achievement while in office. Our United States of America almost doubled in its size. The books I've read about this Great Statesman, he was so talented and gifted wit

Gary's December Coin of the Month

Greetings everyone, in celebration of my daughter's birthday, I present to you the December "Coin of the Month." About three and a half years ago, I purchased a 300 Baht gold coin from Thailand as a memento to my daughter teaching English in Thailand. I still remember showing her the coin and saying," I bet you never spent one of these." To no one's surprise, she replied that she had not. Also issued in denominations of 150 and 600 Baht, this coin commemorates the 36th birthday of Queen Siriki
