with the 2011 Sacagawea Wampanoag Treaty dollar
Howdy Friends,
I recently acquired the 2011 Sacagawea Wampanoag Treaty dollar to complete my grandson?s birth proof set and found an ancestor connected to the events dedicated in the coin in my family tree.
The story I heard growing up was that Kamehameha the Great & FDR were in our family tree and being of Hawaiian descent I always thought the chances were slim to none that FDR was actually in our tree. I have discovered that I am not, at the present time, a descendant of Robert E. Lee and have confirmed that I am of FDR & Kamehameha the Great. I am also descendant of a Mayflower Planter along with an estimated 20 million other Americans that claim an ancestor from the Mayflower and that is where I discovered the Delano and Wampanoag Gay Head Aquinnah heritage in my family tree.
Stephen Hopkins was the Mayflower Planter ancestor present at the signing of the Wampanoag Treaty between the Governor of Plymouth Colony John Carver and Massasoit the Sachem of the Wampanoag Confederation on April 1, 1621. Some information indicates Hopkins presence was requested by John Carver for whom he served as assistant at the time and that the treaty was signed at the Hopkins home where the parties ate some food and shared ?strong water?. This treaty lasted about 40 years and was the longest lasting treaty ever with Native Americans and was respectfully kept by the Wampanoag until Massasoit?s death. One hundred and ninety eight years later in 1819 the Puritan?s, Protestant descendants of the Pilgrims, sailed to Hawaii and availed their religious dogma to the Native Hawaiian population who eventually suffered the same fate as the tribes of New England, they lost their lands then their cultural identity.
Having ancestral ties to events dedicated in this coin is amazing and I look forward to the time when my grandson asks me where his people come from, I will have quite a story to tell, from both sides of the coin.
Happy collecting friends,
