Battle Born Collection auction

Standing room only After my activities at the ANA show itself (see my previous journal), I went back to my car and ate a snack. It was about 4:30, and that was the first food I had since 5:30 that morning. I walked back to the convention center and found the room where Stack's-Bowers was doing the auction floor sessions. I wanted to get a good seat for the 6:00 session, and was not the first one there. Fortunately, some food was provided, starting close to the session start time. Having had

Sent in my first NGC Submission last week!

A test of my skills and how much have I learned about coin grading in the last few years In one of my previous journals I had asked the question-how to determine what coins to submit. Thanks to Gary, Rick and Steve1942 for some good points I had not considered. They reinforced that for many coins it is still cheaper to buy them already graded versus paying for the raw coins plus submission costs. Some additional ideas they shared were that the coin may be worth submitting in order to fill out

NGC Pop of Only 10!

My new addition mentioned earlier in the week. Don't you just hate it when you get a new coin in the mail and you try to register only to get the dreaded "still owned" message? That is the case with this one and my set. Anyway, perhaps it will be added shortly. Until then here is the composite picture of my new coin worth 1521 points and a pop of only 10. This one has so few sales data that NGC doesn't even give a value in MS67RD. No recent auction data either so you are forced to go by

The Youngest Numismatist

The newest "Young Numismatist" fifteen hour old baby Blake admires his first coins a 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set. When the 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Sets went on sale I ordered a set for each of my grandchildren. The coins arrived on July 31, 2012 at 4:30 PM. Our newest grandchild, baby Blake, was born a few hours later at 11:03 PM. When my wife and I went to the hospital to visit we presented our grandson his first coins the n

My 75th Anniversary set finally arrived!

It was shipped via USPS None of the tracking numbers seemed to work on either UPS or USPS sites. So I didn't know where the coins were. They were in transit for more than a week (at least it was longer than a week since I was notified of shipping) before showing up in my mail box. The shipping email failed to mention which carrier the shipping was thru. In the past, I have had either UPS delivery (sitting unprotected on my step) or via USPS and delivered into my mailbox (protected). Now th

Numismatic Detective - Undated Honolulu Carnival Dollar

HK-721 features an Olympic gold medalist Information on the so called dollar HK-721 is bear to locate. Identified as the "Honolulu (Aloha) Carnival Dollar" and given an R-5 rarity (estimated that less than 200 known). Date of mintage is unknown. A good starting point was researching the "Mid-Pacific Carnival" (MPC). I found posters and post cards that indicated the carnival series lasted from 1910 through 1917. My focal point was the year 1914 as the HK-721 "surf rider" bears the resemblanc

SECOND DAY AT ANA

A Little Buying; A Little Selling; A Big Giveaway! Today, unlike yesterday, I arrived at the train station with plenty of time to spare... and I remembered to pay for the parking. I moved to the edge of the platform as the train approached. The problem is, the train never stopped; it just sped through the station! So as yesterday, I took the second train. Upon arrival at the show, I immediately found Mike Printz and introduced myself. We talked for awhile and I gave him 6 coins to put on

FIRST DAY AT THE ANA!!!

Barely put a dent in my TO DO List. I got off to a shaky start. Made it to the train station platform about 5 minutes ahead of the train. With 2 minutes to arrival, I realized that I hadn't put money in the meter for parking! I dashed through the under track tunnel (the pay box is on the other side of the tracks, of course.), paid the machine just as the train arrived. Ran back under the tracks, and heard the train depart just as I was directly under it. Oh well, it's only a 30 minute wait

68FT Rosie

My first one! Silver that is!!! Good Evening, Well here I am sitting in sunny Rochester MN, (Mayo Clinic). It was a good day, down to my last 2 radiation treatments and looking forward to going home for a few days. Have been here (during the week) for almost 7 weeks now. I am sort of looking forward to going home as a vacation of sorts! I was in a good mood or as well as I could be and got a line on a 1950S Silver Roosevelt dime. I have a decent set under way but have always wanted a 68FT

Guess the Grade

Need some help figuring this one out... I'll explain more in a subsequent post. Assume that the fields are clean with no distracting contact marks and the rims of the coin are likewise. Just for clarity purposes I'll point out two things - first their is what I would deem to be a heavy contact mark on the torch at about one third of the way up the torch from the bottom and there are two contact marks in the hair that glare sort of washes out. What grade do you think NGC would assign to thi

New Acquisition

Picked up a nice one on eBay tonight. Secured another NGC Top Pop Lincoln Memorial tonight with only 10 in the grade. This coin moves me half way to #6. It's a gem looking coin and carries 1521 points. I should have it no later than first of the week and I'll add details and pictures then. Thanks for reading. Numismatic Time Machine

With the ANA World's Fair of Money opening in Philadelphia today it's fun to imagine what it would be like hop on a numismatic time machine and visit the 1908 ANA Philadelphia Convention. Of course no visit to an ANA convention in the city of brotherly love would be complete without a visit to the Philadelphia Mint and an opportunity to bring home some souvenirs from the mint gift shop. If you could visit the mint's gift shop during the 1908 convention and had twenty dollars to spend what would

A Full Step I have set aside.

I wasn't too sure on this one Friends, I have a 1949 nickle that was pretty sharp in fact the steps even have a nice view to them. There are so many coins that I want to send in that I simply bypassed it. After reading Jim's journal I went and cropped the old pic. This is a 1949-D and probably a MS67 to boot. I wanted to see what she looks like here. Later---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

It's Official Now

#1 NGC Collection of Eisenhower Dollars As of today I have the #1 Set of NGC Eisenhower Dollars, the bad news is I only have 10 of the 23 coins in their highest grade. I will continue my journey thru the remaining 13 coins. Someday I will have them all, and make a trip to Kansas to give them to his museum. Still hopeing I can get NGC to reholder the ones in the old slabs (at no cost) and get them to make a presentation case for their display. I think it will be enough free advertising for them

1951 (P)hiladelphia MS-66 with Fullsteps!

This piece is simply one of the Best when it comes to Jefferson Nickels with fullsteps. The NGC service has graded no 1951 Jefferson Nickels higher than this coin. It is one of 16 coins that have achieved the MS66FS grade out of over 28 million minted! Quite a coin! Shifting Gears On Morgan Carson City Collection

Going back to the basics-GSA Holders: The way these gems should be collected and revered. I have been collecting Carson City Morgan dollars for a few years now. I have changed directions on my collection more times than my lovely wife wants to hear. I don't blame her...I have a bit of OCD running through my grey matter. I have always loved trying to get real nice GSA holder dollars for my collection because of the history and provenance of the mint, the Comstock Load, and the coins themsel

1978 NGC MS67RD Lincoln Memorial-Population of 10

Latest addition Hi Everyone. Looking through the Ebay listings the other night when I saw this NGC MS67RD 1978 Lincoln Memorial for sale. NGC grades only 10 at this level with none higher. This is the first example I have seen come up for auction. I made my best offer and the seller made a counter and we sealed the deal. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
