Numismatic Trivia Thanks NGC

Crime of 1873, The Comstock Connection, A Tale of Mines, Trade and Morgan Dollars I just want to take a moment and thank NGC for their great numismatic trivia questions that they post almost every week. I have been fortunate enough to win or be the runner up a few times in the past. This past week I was selected as the winner and won this very cool book "Crime of 1873, The Comstock Connection by Robert R Van Ryzin. This is by far the coolest thing that I have won. I also want to thank NGC

Thanks for the responses

about which auction houses and why After reading the responses and communicating with a few here at the CS and talking to the reps from various houses, it does seem that the peak time to sell coins for profitability is during the winter months when money is more free from summer activities. That was the general consensus anyway. One auction house even went so far as to tell me during the winter months you will realize at the least a 15 - 20% greater profit margin as activities are now inside

First Batch!

Good news and bad news... I sent n my first batch of coins to NGC for grading. My Kennedy got a MS64 grade. I really didn't think it would be worthy, but I'll take it. Even at a lower grade it's still beautiful. My dad's 55-S Lincoln also got a 64 RB grade. After sitting around for 30 years I guess I took pretty good care of it. The 99 Wide AM was a surprise. I expected a high AU grade. I love the toning on this one, although my son called it ugly. The other Wide AM coins were disappoi

I found a coin club finally

When out in the middle of no where it's hard to find people to learn from I live in a town like mayberry. Last drive by was probably in the 1700's. The nearest coin dealer that I would trust is about an hour away and coin clubs and shows are almost nonexistent. So I was just about to give up when I discovered this I get all the benefits of a coin club without the pain of dues or meetings. So far people have been friendly and I have been offered all kinds of help. Thank you all so very much.

Buying and Selling with the On-line Auctions-

Is there a Better Way than Ebay? Another member posted a similar question on our Chat Board, and thought I'd follow up with my own. I've dealt exclusively with Ebay for the last 15 years, not giving much thought to other auction houses. Unless it's a really hot item, My listings tend to hang there for quite a while because I can't afford to lose any money, listing it for the fair market value. They generally sell after all the "low ball" priced items are gone. The auctions are generally a

Tom7422's 1876 Centennial Set

Custom registry sets can be inspirational. One of my favorite features on the NGC registry is the ability to create and share custom sets. One of my personal favorite custom sets is: "Tom's "1876 Centennial Set" LINK: http://www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=5869 I love the concept of putting a set together celebrating our Nation's 100th Birthday. Which do you prefer

Another contemplation To everyone who has used auction houses, which do you prefer and why ? Am thinking of using one but it is like shopping for a car, everyone says they have the best deal. I'd like to hear from the grassroots on this one...... thanks, Mike To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Try try again

Just when you think you are getting the hang of this Not sure how but a coin that my Grandma got straight from the bank in 1928 was graded as being cleaned. Now I understand that it was in circulated condition, but no body cleaned coins then and I know my grand ma didn't clean it and I know I didn't clean it. What is a guy to do. And I still cant get the hand of telling difference between a ms 63/64/65 and it's starting to really irritate me. And lets not even talk about the AU58 coins. So far

I really like kookaburras because I am a bird person.

Koala's will do.... and when they are MS70 silver kilos, they will especially do. The Perth mint only made 500 of them. I bought one today and I can't tell you how excited I am for it to arrive. I haven't bought anything in a very long time and having something to look forward to is helping with my depression. I've been in a terrible funk for awhile now and the time does correspond to the blank period in purchasing coins. Someone needs to tell doctors about this. All we need is coins. We

WHEN IS IT TIME TO SELL?

How Do You Know? For a number of months, I have been contemplating disposing of a large segment of my collection. Over the last 2 or 3 years, my interest in my Morgan Dollar set has waned significantly. The set has been complete for, oh I do not remember how long- 5 years?; 8 years? I ceased seriously looking for upgrade pieces some time ago. Seldom do I look at the set (1 or 2 times per year), and I stopped examining the coins for VAMS years ago. As I thought more about selling, I viewed

Carson City Morgans

Grading Carson City GSA Hoard Morgans Over the last few months I have been trying to add to my registry set for One-per-Date MSDs. I focused on the CC GSA Hoards. I ended up getting the 1878, 1880, 1882, 1884, 1885 GSAs and a 1900 O/CC, PCGS-certified (see image attached). Today I sent the GSAs in for grading and variety designation. The 1884 is supposed to be a VAM 7 and the 1878 may be a VAM 2. The 1885 looks real good and I think will go at least 64. That would be nice. The others I hope

What I miss on the "Total Coin Registry Points" page

The Total Coin Registry Points list used to show..... in the right most column of the grid, the date of last change in the users collection. It was interesting to see if the collectors around me, point-wise, were actively adding coins to their sets or not actively collecting and holding the coins or liquidating the collections. Maybe someone at NGC will read this and add it back in to the grid. The image is of my 2012 Alderney 5BP 100th Titanic Anniversary coin from the Royal Mint. Only 3

I'm thinking yeah not worth too much and then he says 1.75 a roll. !! that would keep me busy and off of e-bay so I got em. I will be looking for varieties for a while. 2012 San Fran Mint ASE 3-Coin Set Complete

got all three coins of the special 3-coin san francisco mint issued American silver eagles for 2012 Okay..the title is a teaser. There really are 3 ASE's issued by the San Fran mint this year and I have matching labels and First Strike designations for all 3--but they are not a "mint issued" 3 coin set--just a "Jackson assembled" 3 coin set. Overall, I think they sure do look like a set that was meant to be as one group, even if the 2 proofs were issued together and the MS coin minted at S w

1882 California Gold Oddity

California Gold has its share of oddities; see more in the "Custom Sets" section under "Thematic and Topical" coins. Just acquired this 1882 California Gold token. It is the "Heron" obverse and "date in wreath" reverse. These types are fairly scarce and are almost always holed. This small token now joins my "Cal Gold" collection along-side the "Cherub" token that I described recently in a journal. Thanks for looking. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. UPGRADE!

Even without the 5 free certifications I think it is worth it. I just sent in my 5 free certifications that I got with my NGC upgrade. They are as follows; 1955 S Lincoln My father gave it to me when I was a teen. It's the first UNC coin in my collection. It is heavily toned. It should grade MS65RB. That's my guess. 1964 Kennedy Half. The reverse is end-of-roll toned. Looks one of a kind to me. Should grade MS62-63 probably, but the toning makes it one of my favorites. 1999 Wide AM

Photo's of my coins

Being a cheapskate is costing me more in time than it would have in money. I have started a long and at times confusing job of posting photo's of all the coins in my registry. I have taken what I think are good photo's of all but 25 of my coins. The pain in the behind is cropping and renaming all the pictures with their cert. number. Then trying to find them in my registry to add the coin and any other info I have on the coin. On the good side I'm saving over $3000 and thats without count
