For Novembers Coin of the Month column, I am using four coins to illustrate my heartfelt thanks to all the veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
Those coins, all certified by NGC, are a 2005-P MS-70 United States Marine Corps silver dollar, a 2010-W PFUC-69 Disabled Veterans silver dollar, a 2011-P PFUC-69 Medal of Honor silver dollar, and a 2011-W PFUC-69 Medal of Honor five-dollar gold piece. Each of the dollar coins conforms to the dimensions, weight, and composition of a standard US
This one has been eluding me for a couple of years now...
Year: 1984 D
Grade: MS 67 FT
NGC Pop: 7/1
Purchased: Ebay - Datentype
Cost:$103.50
A tough coin to be had in FT. I've probably looked at 150 examples from mint sets and have only seen one or two coins that might make full torch. Both coins were low grade junkers that I wouldn't waste the time submitting.
I've only seen this coin sell at auction a couple of times and I have to tell on myself that I was too stupid to bid on t
Power held out long enough to get in an auction bid.
Our power at my house goes out for hours with a thunderstorm and has been out for a week or more 3 or 4 times in the past 3 or 4 years. We've had the 5 to 6 feet of snow 2 winters ago. A tornado hit Chesapeake beach 2 summers ago, hurricane Irene was pooh-poohed by many as a fizzle but we had no power for a week and many fallen trees here in Chesapeake country. We were down for 3 days during the "derecho" and have had numerous one or two day

Who else has found a DDR at the 'olina' as well as oil marks I've got about 200 rolls of these and I've only found 3 so far but that would suggest a lot of varieties are out there. Takes a lot of time and my eyes are starting to cross but this is fun.

Today I reached my 100th #1 Registry Set.
Well, granted the vast majority are Sets with less than 10 coins, but spread out over several different countries. I don't expect it to stay at that number for long as a lot of sets get filled up this time of year right before the close of the annual competition. My favorites are the Australian Lunar 1 Oz MS Complete, and the 1 and 2 oz Australian Kookaburra Complete. The latter 2 Sets are made up of coins the majority of which have a total population
Today's Journal entry is the fifth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The fourth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Five Centavos of 1903 - 1928.
The coins in this slot include business strikes in twelve dates, five dates with proof issues, and three recognized die varieties including the famous 1918-S MULE.
The Five Centavos was designed by Filipino artist Melicio Figueroa and engraved by U.S. Mint Ch
... or The Bulgarian Registry Sets have arrived!
1028/2012Yes, its been awhile since I posted a journal, but been very busy with two jobs and getting my currency collection underway. Have managed to pick up a few coins here and there, but nothing really major.I saw that things were picking up again with the registry sets being added, and I poked my head in and asked about the Bulgarian sets... and presto! NGC delivered. I was able to put the three graded coins I have into the sets, and eagerly
my Silver bars are gone (for now)
As most of you know Im not much of a journal writer. Maybe I should buy dragon and this would help. Im a terrable speller and my grammer stinks because of it....
Well as I mentioned above I had to sell 14 of my Silvertowne Silver bars. I was horading them for an end of the world type thing I know sounds silly...
I went to my local (and only ) coin dealer in my area he offered $30.25 per ounce. on the day I sold them Silver was at $32.25 netting me $423
50 plus years of collecting coins. Today I begin cataloging my collection.
I believe I will start with my certified coins.

A battle that has raged for many years.
I've always wondered about this and read many an article about the compelling benefits of swishing your coins. Well, in an accident, I may have finally resolved this issue, at least in my mind.
I've never really been an advocate of cleaning coins. A few years back I bought a jar at a coin show, just out of curiousity. I had some late 60's mint set coins that looked horrible due to cloudy and just plain ugly surfaces. So, I took it home dipped them, rin
One thing I like about Mohrig's Indian Head pieces, they don't all look identical
Here is a BG-879 (1876) by Mohrig, which has quite a different look than the BG-878 I posted a bit earlier. Both coins are nice examples of his skill as a private (illegal) coin and token maker in California.

Mr. Mohrig made some pretty cool coins in California
Just thought I would post an image of one of my favorite California Gold small denomination coins. This one (1875 BG-878) was made by Christoph Mohrig of San Francisco. Mr. Mohrig made numerous "coins" and "tokens" during the 1870's and 1880's. Finally put out of business by the US Secret Service circa 1883, he died in San Francisco in 1904. He was one of the primary and most important makers of California Gold tokens and charms.

What are the chances of starting a NEW State Quarter Set???
Friends, I am in the middle of a crackdown on grading Mint State Quarters with VARIETIES!! As we only have a couple listed with most that were found not listed yet I need to find out how many it takes for variety grades to become authentic. Once we get that situated Stuart and I will find out how many varieties it takes to actually start a Full State Quarter Set--Proof,MS,SMS,including Varieties. I am already thinking that this will e
Passing it forward
The other day ne of the . Manger and I were talking and she brought up that her Son has just completed his State Quarter Board, and that he is very excited about coins and she told her son if you have question that I was the go to guy. well Iam far from that but I can help. It made me think about when I started out and how over the last couple yrs I had question that I needed to ask and I have my go to guy at the S.C. so I went though some of my older stuff to get a packet
Trading the best coins for the best car 1!!
For all of those who know me, I am a serious collector and a huge player in the registry. I buy the best of the best and it was time, my 5 monster mercury were sold at heritage. I have been given a once in a lifetime chance to buy the car I always wanted and it finally became available. It is the original 1967 Playboy pink convertible mustang. I know it may sound silly, but only 10 playboy pink convertibles were produced. It it not just a plain jane c
The USA-Philippines Five Centavos series is a challenge to complete in mint state. While the rare 1918-S Mule overshadows the other dates in terms of difficulty there are several other key and semi key dates that are difficult to locate.
All of the 1916-S through 1919-S Five Centavos have very small populations of certified mint state coins and attractive well struck examples are tough to find. Of those years the 1917-S is the easiest date to find in MS62 and above with a Combined NGC/PCGS
These are what I received this week. I beleive I got the Deal of a Life Time.
These are what I received this week. I believe I got the Deal of a Life Time. I love these coins. I noticed them when I was reading 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins. I was seeing what coins I could afford without putting me in the dog house with the wife.
I would like to know is there any more SP coins out there? Besides the 5oz ones.
If so I think I will start a custom set of only SP 70s.

I Talked My Way Out Of A Discount!
This morning, I called a dealer about two coins that I saw on his website. This is a dealer from whom I purchase regularly, but not at a volume that would rank me as one of his favorite customers.
I do not trust internet pictures, so I ask for detailed in-hand descriptions, and compare the words to what I see on my monitor. My standard format is to review strike, luster, marks, color, and finally, overall eye appeal.
As we reviewed the first coin, he com
Is it real? Only my coin dealer knows for sure.
I have been acosted twice now by a dealer I don't know to buy coins he says are NGC registered as 'PROOF LIKE' ' & using words like 'Premium Quality'.
Does this mean anyting to anyone?
The coin this time is an 1879 10 Cent MS67 NGC PL <Proof like].
Any input regarding this coin and others he classifies as "Proof-Like" would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks

I realized this weekend that I had been slacking on my Custom Set.
Friends, I had started a custom set earlier in the year and even made a goal for the end of the year for it. I had some extra time this weekend so I moved the appropriate coins in and separated them. I was spending so much time on the dimes and Mocoms I forgot all about the NGC 70s Club venture. It seems I have only 14 coins to go by Christmas and my goals will have been met.
HAPPY COIN COLLECTING
