To all ---- a message of peace for Todd Peters!!

Rest In Peace my Friend!! Friends, As most already know our friend has been struggling for two years or more with cancer. His last day was yesterday with family and his struggle is now over. His excitement over the past few years was mainly adding coins to his dime set. The friends he made in the club and coin community was his social network and his commitment and challenge in competing in the dime set was his most enjoyment. Some of us got to know him very well and had a few great laughs in

Vermont state quarter

New Variety??? Friends, While searching 50 rolls I ran across 2 Vermont state quarters with a large extra branch at the top of the left tree. You can see it clearly as a topped off branch to the rear of the tree just under the top right small branch. Here is a pic!! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. VISITED A COIN SHOW ON SATURDAY

DISAPPOINTED ABOUT SHOW, THRILLED WITH MAIL. Hello everyone. It has been awhile, but must vent something. While at the show on Saturday, a dealer or so I think, had a table with some nice Morgans and Peace dollars. Sitting in a chair in front of him was what I thought to be a customer looking at his display which I thought was okay since all the other tables had the same. Chairs were everywere for clients to sit and look. I was looking at some slabs over the shoulder of the gentleman a

I Bought the Slab Instead of the Coin!

I have done this a few times before! Hi everyone, Once again I have purchased a coin based on the slab. This one was a 1998 Robert Kennedy Commemorative $1 graded MS-70. Because of the great price for the coin, I went with a coin in somewhat abused holder. It has many obvious scratches on the front and back and a small chip in the obverse near the label. I do have a few more coins to send back to NGC for re-holdering along with this one and with the costs it still comes out as a good deal.

I Attended a Local Coin Show While Vacationing in Hawaii

Purchased a few Hawaiian Beauties Yesterday, I took my father and son (they both reside on the island of Oahu) to a local coin show in Hawaii. The event was listed at the Hawaii State Numismatic Association web page. A limited number of dealers were present. Don Medcalf (co-author of the book, Hawaiian Money, Standard Catalog, ISBN: 0962326305) had a table and I purchased a few Hawaiian medals from him. He invited me to visit his coin shop to look at his inventory. I will...later on during

Baltimore Part 2

Two Unexpected Acquisitions On Thursday morning, after taking my wife to work, I went back home to do a few things before the show opened to the public at noon. I did want to look at some more auction lots, and arrived at the convention center around 11:30. I had forgotten that lot pickup was from 9 to 11, so I was late for that. Getting the 1840-O half dime would have to wait. None of the lots I examined (some gold dollars of particular dates of personal interest) appealed to me. By the tim

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The Ten Centavos of 1903 - 1906

Today's Journal entry is the eighth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The seventh of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Ten Centavos of 1903 - 1906. The Ten Centavos was designed by Filipino artist Melicio Figueroa and engraved by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber. The obverse design features a young Filipino woman standing to the right in a flowing dress while striking an anvil with a hammer held in

Local Coin Show Today!

Ebay is great, but there's nothing like talking coins during a show. Stories are everywhere and it's fun sometimes to listen to the "tall" tales being told. I think it's just a facet of the hobby to make our coin exploits bigger, better and bolder than the other guy. Talking coins with coin guys and gals is a fun and very relaxing activity. I enjoy perusing the hunderds of thousands of listings on the internet, but it's just not quite the same as talking coins, looking at them and agnozing ove

Feeding the coin addiction when money is tight

Trying to come up with some coin fun during extended downtime so back to the basics I had shoulder surgery last Thursday and find myself recouping at home while my wife is at work. I can do a little work at home but typing with one hand is very tedious. Just typing this is taking forever. So I find myself in a rare opportunity, home alone to spread out my raw coins. I have to keep myself off of EBay as much as possible lest I spend money I can't afford to spend. At this point I can only estim

Baltimore Part 1: Post Shake-Up Success

I got the one I wanted. As I wrote last time, my auction priorities changed at lot viewing on Monday. I entered a strong maximum bid online, and was taken close to it by another online bidder. The live floor session that included this coin, a half dime, was held Wednesday evening. After taking my wife home from work and making dinner (for my sons), I drove back in to attend the session. I wanted to be there to bid on other coins if my high bid was beaten (and maybe even if it wasn't...). Whe

Ever check a coin value and have a heart attack

Found an 1880 O Morgan when I was helping with an estate. Wow there are still a lot of gem's out there. This was a deep mirror proof that I could use to shave with. If NGC tells me it's circulated I'm looking for a new grading company. Then I looked at the value for this coin and just about passed out. So keep looking there's treasure out there. If its a MS63 like I think it is i'm taking the family on a realy nice vacation To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comment

A new coin

Been on my radar for a while I was able to pick up a coin that has been on my radar for quite some time. Namely, Ireland released a silver 15 Euro coin in 2010 that pictures a mare and her foal. It was issued in a quantity of 15,000 pieces, and the image of the horse is a flashback to the Irish half crown from 1928 through the 1960s. It is quite a stunning coin in hand (I posted pictures below). I was reflecting today on how much difference a year makes in the collecting world. Last year

Wow Take A Look At The New NGC Registry Award Icons!

I really like the new icons NGC has designed for award winning registry sets. When I logged in to my Collector's Society account this evening I was pleasantly surprised to find that the nondescript "2011 Best Presented Set" icon on my USA-Philippines Type Set http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=51257 had been replaced with a much more attractive orange colored icon. If you look through the registry you will see that the award icons for all of

Goal Met!

For Now anyway..... In the past two weeks I have achieved my personal goal of building a top five set of Lincoln (1959-date) Cents. This achievement was made possible, in the short term, by three individuals. I purchased a 1977 P MS67RD from fellow CS member Thane. I acquired my 1978 P MS67RD from Hunter's Gold. My 1986 P MS68RD and my 2012 D MS67RD both came via purchase from Mark DiLauro at datentype. Thank you all! I began my set 7 years ago with the purchase of a 2005 P SMS MS69RD a

Lot Viewing Shake-up

Priorities change... After buying and planting a new Canadian Red Chokecherry tree today, I drove in to downtown Baltimore for the Stack's-Bowers auction lot viewing this afternoon. As I had written last time, one coin in particular was already my top priority, based on the on-line information. Several other coins were on my list of alternates. What a difference seeing coins in-hand can make! That top priority coin is a pretty good coin. But close scrutiny revealed some mildly annoying featu

New "Focus"

Actually a new camera (iPad variety) I have about run out of affordable upgrades in the Walking Liberty half series. The addition of '+' grades opened up a few possibilities, and I will add another 66+ as soon as it arrives, but there aren't many more upgrades in my budget. I have one slot open in my NGC FBL Franklin set (the 1962-P in Ms-64). I have only seen one of these for sale in the past year and i was outbid on that one at the last second. So, it's time to start something new. I'll

State Quarters

A roll searching week! Friends, I received a monster box of 50 mix date rolls pre 2004 from Stuartt last week. My investment will be $50 over value and the count of submission coins is averaging 2 per roll. I will be down to 10 rolls left this morning with a cool Alabama die break that supports Helen Keller's name like a plant growing off the arm of her chair. Another special coin is the Kentucky with a solid blue reverse, top grade and full luster (looks like a star designation may find this

Today's Journal entry is the seventh installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The sixth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the "Commonwealth Reverse" Five Centavos of 1937 - 1945. 1878 cc GSA Morgan dollar still in GSA hard pack with PVC RESIDUE?

GSA hardpack with PVC residue on coin I recently purchased a 78 cc GSA ungraded at a show still in the hard pack. It had small green spots around 5 o clock position on reverse. At first sight you would think PVC residue, but being a GSA one would think this coin is uncirculated, it's never been in contact with a PVC flip. Long story short I submitted it to Ngc and sure enough I get the email saying it'd PVC residue and ncs can either remove it and try to conserve it or they can send it back st

One-Per-Date Morgan Dollar Set

Recently acquired set of 28 MSDs Took a big chance and won a 1878 - 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Year Set at auction. Obviously pretty much a common set of dates/mint marks, but I am banking on the 1893, 1894, and 1895 run being at least AU. They will be deinitely be added to my registry set once they are graded. Coins look great under magnification. Can't wait to send some in for grading. Kind of concerned about some of them being cleaned. Anybody tell me how to spot a cleaned coin? 1878-S;
