The many reasons I love the Collectors Society

Several years ago I started a set in the PCGS registry to see what all the hype was about... Turns out it was not worth the effort. Recently, I sold one of my PCGS dimes, after converting my own raw dime into the same NGC coin. Honestly, I forgot I even built the set until the buyer contacted me to release it from my PCGS set. Wow! It had been so long since I created the login and set that my account was locked out from inactivity and/or my poor feable brain could not remember the email/p

1946-date Roosevelt Dimes

so very hard to find in good grades Hello Again my collecter frields, As you can tell I have been working hard to complete all my Roosevelt Dimes competive sets. I am finding it harder and harder to find good high grade coins. I am now in the works of having my silver proof set collection graded and am having some luck there but the older coins and few and far between. I guess I'm going to have to breat my rule against buying at auctions. can anyone tell be which ones are the best at discr

Richard's Journal

Now how do I put this all together My first memories of collecting go way back to my childhood. I was given some coins from my great grandmother, I remember a quarter that was an old walking liberty, a buffalo nickel, and a large coin with circles on the back. I spent the quarter and the nickel on candy, but I didn't know what the big copper one was at that time, I thought it was fake or a Canadian coin. So I came up with this idea that I could make a buried treasure. I took that coin, and I t

How addicting is this hobby

I really miss adding to my collections Greetings, all my friends; Have been away from the Journal board here too long or so it seems. As most know I have been a busy little beaver setting up my store on E-Bay and selling, selling, selling. Well, I now have to admit, I miss adding, adding, adding. I haven't added a coin to any of my collections in what seems like 6 months and I MISS IT !!!! How addicting is this hobby of ours! I do have a number of coins ready to be graded but haven'

Garys December Set of the Month

Greetings all, Decembers Coin of the Month centers on my Netherlands 10 Gulden, Wilhelmina I, 1897-1933, Circulation Issue registry set. That set entitled, Garys Golden Wilhelmina Guldens is currently the top set in NGCs registry. Instead of focusing on the individual coins, I intend to contrast this sets progress with where it was three years ago. To peruse Queen Wilhelminas biography, important information pertinent to all the coins, and an account of each upgrade, I direct you to Garys Gold

Numismatic Research Impact - Remember Pearl Harbor

Seller uses my research ... I was searching the numismatic listing at an auction website (eBay) and found a "Remember Pearl Harbor" medal (I call it a medal due to its listing in the 2nd edition of Hawaiian Money). I noticed several key words used by the seller from my previous NGC journal entries relating to this medal. The terms include "Pocket Coin", "The Medal Arts Co" (word "The" is not normally used as its missing on the medal", "69 days" (estimated days between attack and advertis

Numismatic Detective -- US Mint Oath of Allegiance Medal

American Civil War and the US Mint Washingtoniana collectors have a wide variety of interesting coin, medals and tokens to collect. I was reviewing medals listed at an auction site and found an interesting medal from the start of the American Civil War. The September 2, 1861 "Oath of Allegiance" medal was used to commemorate the "allegiance to the US Constitution" requirement by US Mint officials and workers after the loss of 3 of the 5 US Mint facilities to the Confederate States of Americ

State Quarters

The last of a chance. Friends, Lately I have been searching the first four years of state quarters for a good submission to put in next month. 1999 to 2003 should boost my mint sets without spending a ton of cash on coins already graded. As the quarters are the largest group in the latter years past 1998 that is my beginning and I will complete the sets as time passes. I purchased 50 rolls from stuartt and now just got 27 rolls from coindude. I do believe that with the combined group I shou

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The Reduced Size and Weight Ten Centavos of 1907 - 1935

Today's Journal entry is the ninth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The eighth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Reduced Size and Weight Ten Centavos of 1907 - 1935. When the U.S. Congress established the Standards for U.S. Philippine coins in March 1903 the price of silver was at an all time low. By 1905 rising silver prices brought the bullion value of Philippine silver coins to the level where they

THE REPLACEMENTS ARE COMING!

What Took You So Long? I completed my set of Barber Quarters on January 18, 2007, and wrote a journal entry about it. In June, 2008, I sold my 1915-S MS-63 NGC quarter. It was a lustrous, well-struck, white coin with light gold tint. So why sell it, you ask? The coin had a small spot on the obverse that just bothered me. Whenever I viewed the coin, my eye always focused on the spot. So, I sold it and began looking for a replacement. 15-S is not a rare date, so I thought, this should be a

Was This a Good Risk?

Taking a change on designation review... As you can see, the Mercury Dime pictured below is certified in an NGC holder. It is *not* certified as FB. When I saw it, it looked like a full bands coin to me, so I bought it in the hope of getting it (re)certified with the FB designation. Do you think it was worth the risk to pay significantly over the typical non-FB price, but well under the typical FB price to get it? I'll let you know how it turns out. I Wish NGC Would Tell Why Your Coin Graded The Way It Did.

5 Ounce ATB's 2010 Two 70's Three 69's I have 8 ATB's 5 ounce coins that I purchased from the Mint. I decided to take the chance to get them graded. For the first 5 from 2010 series I got back two 70's and 3 69's. I look at the coin and thought they were all 70's...what the hell the US Mint takes very special handling in the coins so I figured they should rate high. Well they did not and I would like to know why. I wish NGC would tell why your coin graded the way it did so I know what to loo

Almost a 68...

Highest Graded Non-CC Morgan in the GSA Hard Pack This beautiful Morgan received the highest grade of all the non-CC Morgan silver dollars in the GSA Hard Packs at MS67+ (plus). It is my understanding that the plus grade signifies that the coin is at the high end of its assigned grade, and close to the technical requirements for the next higher grade, in this case MS68. So close...but not quite. I added this coin to my set today, and am inching ever closer to the coveted number one spot.

Registry View Counts: Another Way of Keeping Score

As you can probably guess from my journal postings, the area of numismatics that I am most passionate over is the coins, medals, and notes issued by the United States for the Philippine Islands while they were under U.S. sovereignty (1898 -- 1945). I have a special emotional connection with this area of numismatics that is rooted in my father's participation in the liberation of the Philippines during the Second World War. One of the main reasons for my participation in the Collector's Societ

A Complete Set of US/Philippine Bronze Coinage

Fifty coins, and it only took 8 years. It doesn't seem that long ago that I started aggressively collecting the US/Philippine series. I hadn't initially intended to focus on the Bronze coins, but one good opportunity led to another, and about six months ago, I found myself with a very nearly complete set. I was only lacking one Half Centavo, and two One Centavos. I wasn't seeing the missing coins in the marketplace, so I decided to "grow my own." I combed through my collection of raw coin

It first appeared to be a wartime penny???

What did they do??? Hi All, I have been going through a bag of 5,000 wheats. I came across an interesting penny which at first glance I thought it was a war time peeny (1943). Well I glanced at the date and saw 1957..?? Then I looked at the rim of the coin and that part looked as it should. I will post a pick and hopefully someone will have a funny answer for me, like they painted it or maybe it was struck with zinc?? I do not know.... Sometimes it a good idea to check before you buy

18 pc comm. sets sold at silver town I have been eyeing a 18 pc set of comm. 50 cent coins, All NGC graded ms 69. long story short I was about to place the order last night at a cost of $899.95 plus shipping. I made a list of all the coins in the set and went to NGC's price guide and looked up the prices for each coin. It came to $719.80 and as I said they wanted $899.95 for the set. I quickly changed my mind on this purchace and am setting on the money for a better deal. I guess the moral

World War l Era Gem

My newest acquisition a 1917-S USA-Philippines Twenty Centavos arrived in the mail this afternoon and it is a real beauty. Finding Gem quality examples of World War l era USA-Philippines Twenty Centavos can be quite a challenge. All of the Twenty Centavos struck at the San Francisco Mint during these "teen years" have low mintages compared to modern coins and the number of certified Gem quality survivors is quite small for most dates. Well struck Gems are even more elusive as most of the Tw

Balt Show Recap

A recap of last weeks Balt Show and my final purchase of 2012 Last week's trip to the Balt Show was the 1st time I went to the November event. In checking my records I have attended the March Balt show as far back as 1997 ( I live in Northern NJ) and it is my favorite show as my wife and I enjoy the Inner Harbor area and the great seafood restarants the city has to offer. This trip I went solo and combined Friday at the show with flyfishing the Gunpowder River in Upper Balt County on Saturday.
