United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The "Commonwealth Reverse" One Centavo of 1937 - 194

Today's journal entry is the fourth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The third of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the "Commonwealth Reverse" One Centavo of 1937 - 1944. The One Centavo of 1937 - 1944 continues the same obverse design that was used on the 1903 - 1936 One Centavo. The obverse was designed by Filipino artist Melicio Figueroa and engraved by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber. The design

I Just Had to Laugh

at a comment made by a Heritage rep... I just 'won' a couple lots in the Heritage auction held over the past few days. (More journals to come, if I get the time...) Having gotten once pricey half dime, I had decided not to go for another on my list. That latter one did not sell, and is available as a 'post-auction buy'. Last night, I decided to make an offer on it (and did so). I'll have to wait a few days before they decide to accept or reject the offer. Since I've been a regular Heritage

PF70 STAR

check it out HI everyone. I'm sure most of you seen this coin on ebay from datentype. I just purchased it for $127.50. I've only been dealing in coins about 4 years now, and I've never seen one of these. All I know is I wanted it. Just wondering if anyone has ever seen another 70 star out there. NGC says they do not grade 70 stars. Could this be the only one out there? Do you guys think I over paid?   I would love anyone's input. Thanks Brian To see old comments for this Journal

National Money Show

Dallas, TX Today was the last day of the ANA National Money Show in my backyard of Dallas, TX. Today was the only day I was able to go, but I had a fantastic time. The day started with me taking the light rail to the convention center. A nice ride and with traffic from the closing weekend of the state fair, it was nice to not have to drive. When I arrived, I went and paid my admission which included a show guide and a copy of the Numismatist. All the ANA volunteers were top notch great p

Sixty-eight Years Ago Today: "A day" October 20,1944 U.S. Forces Return to the Philippines

Today is the sixty-eighth anniversary of the start of the largest campaign of the Pacific War, the Liberation of the Philippines. On October 20, 1944 an allied invasion force of over 200,000 ground troops under the command of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur landed on the island of Leyte in the central Philippines. At sea in support of the land forces were over 200,000 sailors and airmen of the most formable naval force ever assembled. Throughout the Philippines over 120,000 Philippine

To date finished Comp Set......

Presidents Tonight marks a night I will remember for a long time. I have completed my Comp set of Presidential Dollars (to date) PR70UC all graded by NGC. I received the last 4 coins tonight after work. I might add it was perfect timing, tomorrow morning we leave on a 7 day cruise. Anyway my rank is 1 for the set, but I have to say it was the coin that caught my eye initially, than the competitiveness set in. Either way I thought I would share this with all of you. It just goes to show that if

White Tuxes for my Foreigns

Crossing over five PCGS world coins over to NGC confirms one of my long held suspicions, but does not effectively answer the question, does NGC under grade its world coins or does PCGS over grade theirs? The world may never know, however this I do know with certainty, NGC is more conservative in grading world coins than PCGS is. Most of you will recall that earlier in the year NGC changed their policy of allowing PCGS coins into their world registry to an exclusively NGC registry. I remember b

SILVER EAGLES ABNORMALITY?

DO MOST OF THE EAGLES HAVE THIS? Was going through 3 rolls of silver eagles last night and today, and spotted something unusual to me. On all 60 coins on the reverse below the word FINE the letters f i n and sometimes e have a continuing downward ghostlike image out to the rim. It is almost like an extension of the letters, and appears to be raised. I was using a 20X glass, cuz I wanted to at least give myself a fair shot at MS70s cuz I wa going to pick some out for grading. Guess what? N

USPS - Registered Mail...

Is it really what it's cracked up to be? I find it curious that when I have to go to the post office to pick up my return packages from NGC they have a hard time finding it in 1 out of 3 cases. My local PO is fairly large, but the "secure" area for registered mail is within sight of the counter. Today I waited 25 minutes for them to find my NGC box... I started getting angry when they started to scour the entire back room for the package and they became a little miffed when I pointed out tha

Ineligible Type coin --- NGC will not authenicate

Well, I thought I had a one-of-a-kind coin that only NGC was qualified to authenicate. . . Here is a new one for me: Received verification that the possible 1857 G50C piece I sent into NGC to get graded and authenicated is coming back as-- Inelible Type. For the ones out there, and I am one of them, that do not know when NGC states a coin is an ineligible type, all payments are refunded and the coin is sent back. I called NGC and talked to a wonderful young lady, I do not remember her na

The secret behind toning?

MONEY MAKER??? This one guy has been coming into my store for years now and he knows I collect coins. We've had many conversations about coins and we both love them. Well the Christmas before last he gave me an untouched 2002 MS silver eagle for a present. When he gave it to me it came out of a mint roll. So I grabbed a large napkin and securely wrapped the coin. Got home and set it on the computer desk. Since then, My desk has been over flowing with with stuff. From mail to silver coins, grad

Another one bites the dust!

The newest addition to my Lincoln 1959 - Present set is ... a 1971 P MS67RD with a top pop of 29 in the grade. Lately I find myself acquiring Lincoln cents on payment terms. So far it has worked out fine. This is about the fifth or sixth one I have paid for that way and it has now found a new home in my set. This one is not one of the earth shattering points coins, it is just a must for a complete set of top pops. This one registers 143 points and has helped put my set in the number 6 p

Where is the speared Bison???

A busy Saturday ahead. Friends, I ran across a mint bag of $50 Bisons. It will be a long easy search this weekend to find a spear. At $10 extra for the bag it seemed to be a deal and will fill a hole in my Top 100 if I do find one. Chances are around 1 in 5,000,000, right?? Ah what the heck---worth a look for sure.
