Five Star Beauty

I purchased a really attractive 1904S Twenty Centavos, graded NGC MS64, from David Lawrence Rare Coins yesterday. The 1904S Twenty Centavos had a mintage of 2,060,000. The NGC population for the 1904S Twenty Centavos in MS64 is six coins with only one specimen graded higher. NGC's high grade for this coin is MS65. The PCGS population is 20/13. Attractive high end examples of this issue are moderately difficult to find, and this is certainly one of the finest NGC certified examples. Da

Recent Additions

To a few of my registry sets Howdy Friends, Acquired a few coins this past month for my Kennedy and Special Mint Sets of which the last arrived today. It's an upgrade for my Complete Kennedy Set and replaces a PF67 Ultra Cameo with a PF69 Cameo example. I also acquired a 1973 D MS66 Kennedy and the three SMS cents for my 1965-1967 Special Mint Set registry all graded MS67RD by NGC. I've wanted to fill the Roosevelt Dime slots in the set with FT examples and just acquired a fine 1966 SMS MS

Upgrade to My Registry Sets: 1906 50C, NGC PF66

The newest addition to my USA/Philippine Registry Sets is an absolutely gorgeous 1906 PF66 Fifty Centavos that I purchased from Aspen Coins in last Sunday's eBay auctions. I am always on the lookout for nice upgrades to add to my Registry Sets and this specimen is one of the nicest proof Fifty Centavos that I have seen for a long time. It is blast white with deep mirror surfaces. This spectacular specimen makes a wonderful upgrade for the 1903 - 1906 Fifty Centavos slot in my prize winning (

My First CAC Submission

Hoping for the green bean Hi Everyone. Today, I sent my first submission to CAC to see if the few modern Lincoln Memorial business strike Lincolns that I have in my collection would make the cut. I sent in the following coins and they are all Lincoln Memorials: NGC MS67RD 1970S Large Date, PCGS MS66RD+ 1972 Double Die Obverse, NGC MS68RD 1983 Double Die Reverse, NGC MS68RD 1984 Double Ear and NGC MS69RD 1995 Double Die Obverse. I know there are a lot of different opinions about CAC certific

GOLD EAGLE APPEARS EVERY YEAR!

ANNONYMOUSLY DISCRETE. Each and every year, a Gold Eagle coin shows up in the Salvation Army kettle collections. This has been going on for well over a decade. Whomever it is, is very cleaver in hiding it when putting it in the kettle as bell ringers never see it at all. This person does not do it at the same location nor same day or date of the holiday season. Hence he/she/they remain annonymous. What a great way to pay it forward. Obviously this person is somewhat well to do, for he/

Christmas is getting closer by the day

My wife has asked me what I want... Friends, I did finally get around to renewing my membership this week. I sent in a group of circulated state quarters for grading and hope NGC will have a Christmas gift or two in there for me when it returns. My wife asked me Monday what I would like as she knows nothing on numismatics for gifts. I will need to visit a few coin stores and see if I can find a few 1970 to 1980 uncirculated mint sets. I have quite a group but missing a few in that area to c

My Newest Top Pop Acquisition: 1905 One Centavo, NGC PF66 RB

USA-Philippines proof coins are very special treasures. When these much sought after coins are offered in the marketplace, it is generally at one of the major auctions held in conjunction with a national coin show. Imagine my surprise when I found a Top Pop (NGC Population 1/0, Combined NGC/PCGS Population 6/0) 1905 PF66RB One Centavo on eBay. The coin was offered by Aspen Coins in an eBay auction that ended 12/3/2012. The 1905 USA-Philippines Proof Set had a mintage of only 471 making it the

To retro or not

It would make it unique and look pretty sweet .... Holiday Greetings everyone; Today while sitting here at the computer and looking at some coins the thought hit me to pull one of my sets of ungraded 25th Anniversary Eagles out of the safe and have them graded in the black retro holder. I really believe they would look great and also think it would be a unique look for a complete set of 25th Anniversary Eagles in black. The more I contemplate this notion the more I like it. What about New Orleans?

Carson City gets itself and denomination set shouldn't New Orleans? And maybe even San Francisco and Denver. I lived in New Orleans for 4 years in the early 80s. I grew to have an affection for the city below sea level. The New Orleans Mint Museum is one of the most un-pretentious and enjoyable museums that I have been to. New Orleans was the first "branch" Mint to coin non-gold coins. It began with a beautiful "no stars" dime. The 1838 New Orleans proof half dollar was likely minted in Phila

Numismatic Detective: Unraveling a Numismatic Myth

Sometimes even the most respected numismatic scholars get their facts wrong. When this happens misinformation can be perpetuated for decades as succeeding generations of numismatists quote the original supposedly reliable source. In this Journal posting I will examine and attempt to unravel one of the most enduring numismatic myths the mistaken belief that the 1920 "Wilson Dollar" (the official medal struck to commemorate the opening of the Manila Mint) was designed by Clifford Hewitt. Another year gone already...

It's hard to believe that an entire year has passed since the last registry awards. I wish you all lots of luck during the upcoming judging for this year's top accomplishments. One day perhaps I'll be in position to grab an award for a top set, I'm slowly working on my Roosevelt dime collections. The top slots in this set have quite a bit more expendable income than I have for coins. So, I have to be creative and work hard at getting top coins for my sets. Here's a big thank you to all that ha

Numismatic Detective -- Official Hawaii Statehood Medal Revisited

Do you own the lowest serial number NIIHAU correction medal? Recently, I acquired another Official Hawaiian Statehood medal in sterling silver (submitted for NGC grading and encapsulation earlier in November 2012). This specimen is serial number 1309. In a previous journal entry I presented original research that concludes that serial number 1266 is currently the known "discovery" medal that corrected the the NII HAU spelling error (space inserted between the letter I and H) to NIIHAU (sing

Why Garys Coin of the Month?

The Full Library of Garys Coin of the Month Journals represents much of what I enjoy about numismatics and coin collecting. Together with collecting coins, I also enjoy history, writing, and photography. All of these aspects combine into what has become Garys Coin of the Month. More than merely collecting coins into sets, I want to know the who, what, where, when, and whys of the particular coins that I collect. Concisely, I have a desire to know who designed or commissioned the minting of my

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The Commonwealth Reverse Ten Centavos of 1937 - 1945

Today's Journal entry is the tenth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The ninth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Commonwealth Reverse Ten Centavos of 1937 - 1945. The "Commonwealth Reverse" Ten Centavos of 1937 - 1945 is the same size (16.5 mm) and weight (2.0 grams [30.86 grains] of .750 fineness silver [ASW 0.0482 oz]) as the "Reduced Size & Weight" Ten Centavos of 1907 - 1935 and uses the same ob

Recent Mint Purchase

Sometimes you just can't stop yourself Well Folks, I have not been very active in my collecting endeavours lately but I did note the Mint was offering their 2012 Silver Proof Set. Tips for Sprucing Up Your Custom Registry Sets

Did you know that you can use HTML Code to add graphics and photographs to your Custom Registry Set? I really love the Custom Registry Sets. They provide a wonderful opportunity for creativity and telling your own numismatic story. Obviously my fellow Collector's Society members agree with me as there are currently over 7,000 Custom Registry Sets. There are some amazing Custom Sets in the Registry and I really enjoy exploring them in my spare time. The NGC judges will certainly have a diffic

More About the Mars Cent

VDB or not? This info comes from the NASA web page (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/multimedia/pia16131.html) where the photo in my previous post was found. "The image was acquired with MAHLI at a distance of 5 centimeters (2 inches). MAHLI can acquire images of even higher resolution and can be positioned as close as 2.5 centimeters (about 1 inch); however, as this is the first checkout of the robotic arm, it was decided not to attempt to place the MAHLI at its closest focus distance

Mr. Lincoln Goes to Mars

It's a picture of part of the calibration target for the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera at the end of the robotic arm of NASA's Curiosity outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed. The target includes a 1909 Lincoln cent!
