Congratulations to all

and to everyone, have a great new year Reflecting back on our past year .... I've seen numerous friends make major contributions to their collections. Even if I might not have commented at the time, it didn't go unnoticed. Well done to each and everyone of you. I was fortunate to "learn" about coins from other countries through various journals you have posted. I was very lucky to share some personal thoughts from various members who were having a rough go of it at the time.

Holiday Readings & Musings

I have been catching up on coin related reading over the holiday break Hi Friends, I have been catching up on coin related reading over the holiday break, more so than usual as the weather is too cold to productively fly fish for trout here in New Jerssey and I feel my time better spent gearing up for 2013 and my coin collecting goals. In building the Somerville Set I relied heavily on aquiring as many related books and journals to help me in my purchases that have resulted in completed Indi

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The Fifty Centavos of 1903 - 1906

Today's Journal entry is the fourteenth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The thirteenth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Fifty Centavos of 1903 - 1906. The Fifty Centavos was designed by Filipino artist Melicio Figueroa and engraved by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber. The obverse design features a young Filipino woman standing to the right in a flowing dress while striking an anvil with a ha

Knowledge Empowers the Collector -- Part 1

What a find! I review auction listings periodically and scan for items of interest to add to my collection. Two weeks ago, I found a very interesting listing. The seller did not know exactly what they were selling (as stated in the listing) and was not able to locate any information about his item. My "cherry picker" curiosity kicked in. I reviewed the wording in the auction listing and its pictures multiple times. The information provided was sparse and the low quality pictures were not tha

Hello, I am new.

G is in the house... Hello, my name is Greg and I am new to this site. I am in processing of enetring all my sets and most of my coins. I have collected a lot over the years, mostly "fillers" not much of great desire. I do have a lot of sets filled and about to start on some more. If you have any fillers that I am missing, please feel free to contact me, however I can not afford the higher grade stuff. If you are looking for fillers, I may have one, as I have several loose old coins.

New Year, new submission

First one to start the new year Season's greetings everyone, Well, last evening I decided to get an early start on the new year and I filled out the forms to submit 2 more rounds of coins for grading. An Early Bird submission and a Modern submission. Between the 2 submissions are more Franklin proofs (I can't seem to get enough, ) and some really sweet Lincoln proofs for my Abe's Red Hots collection. Included in my Early Bird submission is a really nice and well defined MS Lincoln 1909 VD

2012 goals met

Hard to believe but, I stuck with it. I started my coin collection, from scratch, in November 2011. I did not know what I would actually collect but, after reading many of the comments on this site, doing what I like and what I could offered were the main guidance from the various people who read this Newbie comments. I finally decided to focus, as a primary collection, my attention on NGC PF70 Sacawawea and President dollar coins. Along with other coins that I purchased--because they drew

1941-Dated "Remember Pearl Harbor" Medals

My new custom set listing ... http://preview.outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed.com/cqwkfsu A few medals belonging in this custom set are on their way back home to me from NGC grading/encapsulation, hence the extensive write-up in the set's description. The purpose of this set is to be a numismatic reference for the "Remember Pearl Harbor" medals (since the medal is basically unknown, information is not readily available, and the medal lays claim in being the first US numismatic item to depi

Knowledge Empowers the Collector (previous journal entry removal)

I had to remove my original journal entry ... For those of you who read my original entry (posted this past weekend) got a glimpse of a recent purchase I made. It was about a naive auction lot seller and informed auction lot buyer. I removed the journal entry as the auction purchasing process is still running its course. I will re-post the original journal entry, provide an updated journal entry and point out additional interesting material I found relating to the purchased item. This pur

My Christmas List took a twist

From Regular old mint sets to shiny red Lincolns Friends, I did mention in a previous journal that my wife was going to get me some mint sets for Christmas since I spend so much time searching through coins for submissions. Well I went on the chat boards a little over a week ago and Michael was selling his sweet NGC MS67rd wheats at 50% off. I was not the first one to see the sale but I was sure to get a large group and also did a little trading at the same time. So for a bit of cash and a

SORRY

I apologize. To the person I upset who wrote me 4 times in my email about my last journal. I apologize. Our families have had a hard time the past few weeks, and I should not have mentioned it at all. What I did not need is your colorful words of expression. Things were hurting enough, but I guess you felt that I was wrong. I deleted all of your touching emails. So that was it. I am sorry. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 2012 into 2013

Thank goodness the Mayans didn't get us. So as 2012 draws to a close, I wanted to take a look back. My goal for 2012 was not very rigid. I knew that I was not going to collect as heavily, because I wanted to build my photography gear, which I did. I bought some coins here and there as money permitted and I kept my Kennedy and Sacagawea collections current. I ended the year a little heavier, working on my Lincoln 1934 - 1958 Wheat collection. I am down below 10 coins needed. (Not counti

The twelfth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Commonwealth Reverse Twenty Centavos of 1937 - 1945. Just arrived

Most definitely, the bigger the coin the better per my previous post about sending in a set of 25th Anniversary Eagles to be graded and slabbed in retro holders. They just arrived back today. I total agree with the thought that smaller coins would not look very well in the black retro holders but the bigger coins aren't too shabby ! As promised here is a photo of the set. Since they were not sealed from the mint, only the (2) received the 25th Anniversary label, which is really no big deal

The 1948 D Graded MS 64 FT about what I expected The 1950 D graded the same. however the 1948 P and the 1948 S came back improperly cleaned. I have spent well over $8000.00 with this company this year alone. when I contacted them today there only recourse was for me to send them back the slabbed coins and they would replace them with two raw coin

Weekday Teletrade Bargain

I normally don't monitor weekday Teletrade auctions as USA-Philippine coins are generally not offered during the week. Monday's Teletrade auction was the exception in that it offered a number of Gem and Near Gem One Centavos. All of the coins were either 1931-M or 1934-M. I already own a beautiful 1934-M in MS66 RB so the 1934-M specimens did not interest me. The 1931-M is a date that I needed and there were several specimens in this auction. The nicest example was a 1931-M MS65 RB. Alt
