Slot point increase

Must be a mistake Howdy Friends, Just noticed I have almost a three thousand point increase to my registry ranking and after looking into it I found the 1992 S slot in my Kennedy Registry increased by 2631 points. I sent off a inquiry to NGC asking them to look into the issue. Also got an increase in points for the 1970 S slot as well but a more reasonable increase of 85 points for a star designated example. saw a similar issue last week with the Eisenhower mint state registry must be a s

The 1964 Denver Jefferson nickel

During the 75 year run in the Jefferson Series so far- Less than (10) coins were certified in the Top (2) Grading Services in this grade with fullsteps and higher! I find it very hard to fathom how the US Mint could pump-out 1,787,297,160 of these denver nickels for circulation leaving extremely low mintstate examples to show for it. I feel very fortunate able to obtain one of these. It is quite obvious the officials in charge of our countrys coinage was not showing concern or interest in sav

Off from work

Having some remodeling done. Well, I took today off from work to have our bathtubs refinished. The smell is horrendous! It will be worth it though, because we are pushing to list our house on the market Friday. Cross your fingers for us. In the mean time, I am in the living room looking at coins. I like the ending soonest filter on Ebay. I am getting a few great deals. However, I did miss out on one, because I was watching a Michael Jackson video on youtube while I was waiting for an

Update

... on the site Hi all, Just wanted to give an update on how the site is going: Traffic picked up this week, which was nice to see. There are now 3 dealers signed up with items posted. I have been adding items almost every night, and managed to acquire some new pieces this weekend. Some are already posted, and some have yet to arrive here... these are some very interesting items, and I look forward to getting them up! I attended the Cowtown Coin Show in Ft Worth this weekend. I spent half of the day catching up on photos. Friends, Well Mike did some catching up on his pics last week and I saw I needed 100 or more pics. I had some good sunshine today and figured it was a perfect day to catch up my page. Now every coin has a pic for the showing. Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Variety is the spice of life.

High mintage figures often imply common coins, but also provide the opportunity for some highly collectable varieties! Lyman L. Allen literally wrote the book on U.S. Philippine Coinage. Entitled "U.S./Philippine Coins," it is now in it's 7th edition. It is a guide book to the entire series and major die varieties as well as a price guide. Mr. Allen self published his book every other year to keep the prices and population reports relatively fresh. My earliest copy is an autographed 4th Ed

$1 Trillion Platinum Coin Facts, Myths, Realities

What are the odds of the U.S. Mint creating a $1 trillion coin? Perhaps the idea is mere fancy. "The White House refused to comment Wednesday on the possibility of a $1 trillion platinum coin manufactured by the U.S. Mint. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters, "I would refer you to the Treasury for the specifics on [a coin]." At the end of the press briefing, Carney said, "I have no coins in my pocket." The press secretary was asked at least five times about a $1 trillion coin

Genius or an Idiot - Only time will tell...

Bought a new coin for my Bust half dime set. Buying a new coin for my set doesn't seem like much of an event, at least until I tell you it is raw. Like most every one here, I've been burnt on cleaned/doctored coins in the past. So, am I a genius or a complete insufficiently_thoughtful_person to try this again? The coin - 1832 Capped Bust Half Dime As described by the seller an MS 64+++. I looked at the pics and really liked it. I contacted the seller and asked a few questions including a

The Purge II

Totally sad O.K.. So sometimes I read about someone who submits an order, only to be dishartened when their crossover submission is returned, not to their sadisfaction. Personally, I say too bad, maybe they expected too much, or their coins were not what they thought. Today is my day to cry. None of my PCGS coins crossed over. I mean, these were top notch coins. how can this be. PCGS can't be that bad at grading, can they? Here is what I sent in. A 1954 and 1956 Canadian PL-68 silver dolla

I HAVE VISIONS OF CASABLANCA

Another interesting coin this time from Morocco My adventure in foreign coins is proving to be just that. It is most definitely much more than I anticipated and all of it in a good way. Not being one to shy away from a challenge sorting, identifying and subsequently attempting to value all of my friend's coins from around the world is a learning experience for which I am most thankful. The potential history that each one of these coins holds is truly fascinating. The images some of them conjur

Meaning of the Numismatic Detective Title

I don't want to regurgitate so I must create! I use the heading "Numismatic Detective" with the condition that what I document is new information that I created, derived or is missing in numismatic reference books or periodicals. I try not to "regurgitate" all my information that was previously documented by other numismatic sources. Why? I was once given an example by a professor. Three college students were given a blank piece of paper and told to take notes during the guest lecture. The f

2012 in Review

Last January I posted a Journal delineating eleven Numismatic Goals and Objectives that I hoped to achieve in 2012. Today's Journal will review those Goals and Objectives and evaluate how successful I was in meeting them. In order to understand how I determined my 2012 Numismatic Goals and objectives it is important for the reader to know two important points about my personal philosophy of collecting. Point number one is that I collect US/Philippine coins and notes as part of a broader stud

Anyone Seen This California Gold Token Before?

Just got this 1880 Cal*Gold Reverse token and am seeking any information... Howdy: This 1880 "Cal*Gold" Reverse token is unlike any other in my collection (Custom Sets - Vintage California gold tokens). Does anyone know anything about this quarter-dollar sized gold token? It is close to a few of the token designs in my set, but different. Any information would be most appreciated. Thanks. January Submission Accepted

State Quarters MS uncirculated stage 2 of 3 Friends, I finally made enough extra cash to send in the second stage of my state quarters. This submission will cover mainly 2005 to 2008 with a few earlier pieces. The first submission (stage 1) covered 1999 to 2004 with 67 coins that filled 29 holes. This submission surprisingly has the same --- 67 coins but will fill 40 holes in the set. I will be sending in the SMS pieces in May or June as I have other sets that need attention and will send i

Another long photo shoot

why did I allow this easy task to get so far behind? Good afternoon my fellow collectors, After looking at the large pile of slabs that needed to be imaged, I broke out the camera and my lightbox and started taking photo's. I always take 3 photo's of each so when I run them through photoshop, I know I'll get at least one good photo. I was about 165 slabs behind so this took awhile to just get the photos. I'll wait until after dinner to photoshop them that way I'm fresh and my mind is a lit

NGC Registry Awards

Thank you NGC for selecting my 1908 USA/Philippines Proof Set for a "2012 Best Classic Set Award". For the past several years much of my collecting efforts have focused on my Custom USA/Philippines Registry Sets. When NGC established a competitive category for 1908 USA/Philippines Proof Sets (in November 2012) I deleted my "Custom Set" in that category and set up a "Competitive" 1908 Proof Set. While I am honored that NGC selected my 1908 Proof Set for a "2012 Best Classic Set Award" I feel
