Numismatics and History

Historians and archeologists have long regarded coins as important historical artifacts for understanding the culture and history of ancient peoples. That is why all world class museums include ancient coins in their collections. Modern coins and notes also reflect the historical and cultural context of their times. In order to fully appreciate the coins and notes in our collections it is important to understand the historical context in which they were created. While most numismatic refere

Self Inflicted Wound

I guess that is why they call them "Competitive" sets So, here I was bidding on the Heritage auction the other day. I never won anything, but then again the two coins that I was remotely interested in bidding on went WAAAY more than I wanted to pay for them. I didnt really need them, but I felt Kind of funny about one coin in particular. A 1954 Canadian PL-67 dollar. I have a pcgs PL-68 with a heavy Cameo, but I felt like I should bid on this, just for the hell of it. Well, when it came time,

Congratulations and Thank You

Humbled to be honored Hi Everyone. First off let me take a moment to thank all of the award winners this year. As I see the various post for congrats I take the time to view the mentioned sets and wow do we as a society have some amazing and varied collections. Some of the coins in these collections are just absolutely astonishing. Everyone of you should be proud of your accomplishments. I am myself humbled to have been recognized for 3 of my Lincoln 1959-date business strike sets. I sta

2011 Silver Eagles I have some silver eagles in pcgs in both ms69 and 70. Also they are represented by each of the mints. They all have milk spots to varying degree. None of my NGC coins have this and they also are from different mints. Plus, I guess this is why I have been collecting NGC. The quality of the PCGS is terrible. One ms70 has scratches around it like pennies have when the first one comes out of a roll from the rolling machine. Also some have nicks and scratches. So why the

Platinum is Now Higher Priced Than Gold

It has been upside down for a historic time period! Platinum historically costs more than gold. But for the last 2 years or so, this has not been the case. Gold during that period cost as much as a couple hundred dollars more than platinum. Today, platinum's price has exceeded the price of gold. Will it hold or fall back? Patience

A virtue I don't have, but could probably use. I was bored a few nights ago, so I decided to look around everyone's favorite auction site, Ebay. Usually when I buy coins I look for the lowest Buy It Now price. I don't like to wait for auctions to end. Well, this night, I decided to search by Ending Soonest and as I was searching, I noticed the Civil War Commemorative Half, a coin I had never seen before in the Buy It Now offerings. I made a couple of bids and won it. It was kind of exhil

I think this will be TELTRADES last year as an auction

They are a last resort when you buy coins from them ! I have been dealing with teletrade for over 15 years and every single coin I bought from them, I will lose money when I sell any of them. Teletrade has made a decision that, they just crippled themselves and its their own fault. Lets face facts, teletrade is a last resort auction house. They really didn't know how to run their auction. If you seen a coin you really wanted and you call them, they couldn't tell you what a coins reserve w

Cherry Picking

There are some out there. One more item from the Heritage auction at FUN: In the on-line only session Saturday, there was an 1861 half dime that caught my attention. It is in a PCGS OGH, graded MS66, with green CAC sticker. Even in MS66, such a coin is not terribly expensive, (about $1225 retail, typically less at auction) and Heritage relegated it to the Saturday online session. I recently bought an 1861 in MS64 for different purposes, and still "need" a higher grade example to replace it

Making The Rounds

This coin has been changing its clothes. First up - Congratulations to all the award winners! I actually have a couple nice new best in category icons this year. One of them is a bit of a hoot. There is a set for all the Logan-McCloskey varieties of early half dimes (through the Capped Bust series). When I saw that that set category existed, I decided to create a set for my CBs. Unfortunately, the coins must be certified with the LM variety on the label. At the time, none of mine were so cer

Some Advice Please

To conserve or not? Check out this merc... http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=131303&lotNo=29045 I'm looking to add to my 1942 mint set, but I'm not happy with the toning... to me it detracts from the coins appearance. Do you think it is worth getting, and having conserved and reholdered? Would conserving the coin run the risk of changing the grade? Appreciate any advice. what set is easier and or better to build

The saint gaudens or the gold liberty I have alot of commons i want get rid of and replace it with a NGC $20 Saint Gaudens and or Liberty. And was wondering which would be a better fun build slowly of course but not difficult. In my opinion the fractional the $2.5 $3 $5 gold seem to me not worth the effort Cause i think they are a bit over priced but i havent really countedtihem out yet I just want to build a gold set not modern cause i am very unhappy with the modern coins

Lost Heritage bid at the live auction

Missed it by that much This was only my second time bidding in a Heritage online auction. The live auction was held this weekend at the FUN show in Florida. I was bidding on a key date for my Washington quarter set, a 1936 D NGC AU53. I had the winning bid at 220 when the online auction closed. Rarely am I willing to pay what I would consider full retail price for a coin. I realize there are nicely toned, condition rarity or CAC coins that go for more than retail, but I am normally not a bidde

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The "Commonwealth Reverse" Fifty Centavos of 1944 -

Today's Journal entry is the sixteenth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The fifteenth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the "Commonwealth Reverse" Fifty Centavos of 1944 - 1945. The "Commonwealth Reverse" Fifty Centavos of 1944 - 1945 is the same size (27 mm) and weight (10.0 grams [154.32 grains] of .750 fineness silver [ASW .2411 oz]) as the "Reduced Size & Weight" Fifty Centavos of 1907 - 1921 and u

SEARCHING and SEARCHING

My eyes feel like large sticky bubbles!!! Friends, I don't know how the graders keep from having blurry vision. As I searched through another 4400 statehood quarters sometimes I hit a few rolls that are very lustrous. Of course these are what I am looking for and at first the hits and scratches are very easy to see. The quarters go into the spending pile quickly and the keepers are very few. By the end of 2 or 3 rolls of flipping full luster coins in a light the continuous reflection gets m

Turning Disappointment into Satisfaction

The following is my response to the thread, Last Straw, by SPHanson. I too was a little disappointed when my Wilhelmina set made of up of the best coins available to me didnt win an award for best world. After all I poured my heart into this set to make it the best I could complete with photos, upgrade history, and great coin descriptions. When I looked at the winning sets to see what I could possibly do to take my set to the next level, I found four of the five sets without full descriptions

I should wake up sooner.

Thanks for the awards, NGC! My thanks to NGC for the Best Presented Set Award. I really appreciate the recognition. Congratulations to all of the other award recipients as well. I have found NGC to be very responsive to all of my questions and requests. Most have been handled within hours and my request for the creation of the "Culion Island Leper Colony Coinage" set was handled in just a couple of days. I don't agree with every change that NGC has made, but there have been good reason
