A follow up to a previous post

Coin in hand A follow-up regarding the 1936D AU53 quarter I won at a Heritage auction. I wrote that I will never know if I got this coin at 30-40% off the previous auction prices because the market felt it was that bad, because it was Super Bowl Sunday and fewer people were bidding, or that since there was no live bidding afterwards no dealer could scoop it up cheap to resell. I came up with another option- the photos did not completely show the true coin as it looks in hand. I have now re

Wait for it again........

1904 Half Centavo MS66 RB (Combined NGC/PCGS Population 4/0). When congress approved a coinage system for the U.S. administered Philippine Islands the smallest denomination authorized was the bronze Half Centavo. First struck in 1903 the Half Centavo was poorly accepted by the public and it soon became apparent that this was an unneeded and unnecessary denomination. Production of Half Centavo business strikes was halted in March 1904 and most 1904 Half Centavos were never released into circu

Bombshell

Key Coins I was cruising around Ebay today looking for coins for my Commemorative Half set and I noticed that I have not seen the 1982 Washington coin in MS69... ever. Unfortunately, I can not see the population reports without a paid NGC membership, but by looking at all the sets, I found the writing on the wall. I looked at the #1 set and that person only has a MS69. I take that to mean MS70 either does not exist or is very, very scarce. The #34 set "only" has a MS68. That means tha

Submission Comes Home

... and here's the promised pic! As promised, here is the Bulgaria MS66 2 Leva I submitted. I've been afk for the past few days, attending a show and working on my site, so am just catching up on Dr.D controversy. I have my qualms with NGC, as many know, but I have always praised the customer service... top notch in my book. I would love to see more communication in why a coin gets the grade it does, and I'm shocked that the best grading service in the world would refuse to grade items becau

Numismatic Detective - The Hula Dancer and the Changing Volcano

I was observing the hula dancer then ...WAM BAM As I was checking my hoard of Hawaii Statehood SC50C (aka 2MS-4 and 2MS-5, as defined in the NGC sanctioned and approved referenced book, Hawaiian Money Standard Catalog) I made a discovery. I was performing a NGC 68 to NGC 68 comparison to improve my grading ability (I was also comparing my NGC 66 and 67). WAM BAM, it hit me. I saw a shifting volcano. As the pictures indicates. Focus on the hula dancer's head. Then look at the volc

Perhaps a Larger Issue

Lack of "posts" does not necessarily equate to a lack of "submission experience" Well, the whole Dr. "D" thing has been interesting (but I hope it goes away soon). Social media offers numerous new avenues to communicate and even problem-solve. Nonetheless, daily postings of a rant might be well over the top. Obviously there exists a bit of ego on the part of the good doctor - how many folks feel obligated to list their postsecondary degrees on a coin collecting forum? The issue which both

Gold and Silver

In freefall? I've been keeping an eye on the movements of gold and silver as of late. In my short 33 years, this is my first "real recession" as a working adult. My wife and I have been lucky enough to have stable jobs, so it hasn't affected us as much as other people in the country. One of the things that I've formed an opinion about is that gold seems to be a "worry investment". As the stock market plummeted, more and more people got into gold and silver. Now that the DOW is back over

Should I grade all of these?

Should I or should I not? Only my grader knows for sure. I think I have discovered my real reason for messing with coins and paper money. It is the chase, the hunt, the quest for the holy grail as it were. Yes, I buy Ag and Au due to the investment fact I feel metals will rise in price enough to cover buying stocks and waiting for good news. Economically, I feel over the longer haul of 2 - 4 years, my bullion coins will surpass the best of the stocks and indices. BUT... It is the fun

Who Can Help Me With This Coin

1889 Guatemala 1/4 real date over strike Hi Everyone. As most of you know I collect mostly Lincoln Memorials for my registry sets. I belong to the Tampa Bay Coin Club which has been around for a very long time and we have an auction every month at our meetings to help raise funds for the club. I bought this 1889 Guatemala 1/4 real not because it fit into any of my registry sets but to support the club and also because it is silver and old. I paid $6.00. The coin itself is not very expensiv

New Addition to the Family

Big Sister is Coming Home! First, thank you for the emails, looks and prods from my last post on something special coming my way. I am a bit of an anomoly when it comes to collectors. I am not a rich man. Quite the opposite. I started my Morgan Carson City GSA Holder set later in life than I should have because now instead of just cracking open the checkbook I have to move things here and there and it isn't always easy as many of my fellow collectors will agree, but sometimes when things

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The 1936 Roosevelt-Quezon Peso

Today's Journal entry is the twenty-first installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The twentieth and final slot in a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the 1936 Roosevelt-Quezon Peso. When the United States defeated Spain in the Spanish-American war of 1898, the Philippines became a United States possession. Unlike other colonial powers the U.S. always had intentions of giving the Philippine Islands full independence once the inhabitants were given

Coin and Set Descriptions.

It's not that obvious what belongs in each one. My goal is to provide good pictures along with interesting and appropriate descriptions for all of my Collectors Society registered coins and sets. I've got the good picture part pretty well under control, but the description aspect requires significantly more effort than I anticipated. 100% of my coins have descriptions, but many of them are what I call "throw down" descriptions. Some contain just the facts (catalog number, mintage, date acquir

The never ending job

When will it be completed ? Hello fellow collectors, I just finished uploading all the photos I have of my coins. However I have 117 coins summitted to NGC at the moment so in a week or two I'll set up my light box and start all over. I love collecting modern coins and am doing my best to complete a Roosevelt Dime collection including the Error coins this I am finding almost impossable but over time I'll complete the set. But back to the photos this is the part of collecting I seem to

1893-CC $20 NGC AU58

Final Carson City Double Eagle With each new purchase for the Grandview Collection in 2013, I plan to describe the coin and relevant background information with a journal post. Additional images of the coin and holder will also be provided in the journal. I may even post about interesting coins that have been in the collection for many years. The last year that the Carson City mint produced coins for circulation was 1893, and thus coins from this year are very popular. The mintage of do

Crossovers

My Collectors Society coupon for last year's renewal has been sitting unused in a desk drawer for almost a year now. With the coupon expiration date fast approaching I figured that it was high time that I stopped procrastinating and sent in my five free submissions. After much deliberation I decided to use the coupon to cross-over five of my PCGS certified USA-Philippines coins. The coins that I am submitting for cross-over are: 1) 1906 Five Centavos, PR 65 (1676 Registry Points) 2) 190

Morgan Dollars

I love Morgan Dollars and have had 3 complete certified sets which were sold by Heritage Galleries in years passed. I am in the process of building another certified set, at present I only have 24 coins, all except 2 are MS 65 or MS 66. The other two are some of the hard years 1884-S AU 55 and 1896-O AU 55. I intend to continue work on this set until completed. This month I went over my budget. I am still looking for MS 65 or higher coins and of course, at the best price. To see old comments

... and I'm pleased as punch! After some consideration, I decided to use my free 5 gradings certificate to add to my graded Bulgarian collection. I have a few proofs that I have had graded already, but no circulation coins as of yet... until now. The 1992 regular circulation coins are notoriously difficult to get in high grades, since there are no mint sets to draw from, and no examples to purchase. This means that if I want them, I have to send them in myself. I spent some time searching

It is one of 3 that remain in my 1934 - 1958 Lincoln Wheat Set. I haven't seen one of these come up for sale in months. However, it is currently sitting at $75 with 3 days to go and NGC's price guide values it at $20..... The pros are that it has nice eye appeal with the red toning and it may be awhile befo

Sets of PFUC AGEs 2001, 2002 and 2003

Betcha cannot eat just one! This is like eating potato chips. I was shopping for coins and put in a watch or want list somewhere. I wanted a set of PF70 AGEs and in less than a week three responses came in. So today, I (while my wife was out shopping) bought three sets of AGEs Like in the title, one each, the 2001, 2002, 2003 AGE sets. $50, $25, $10 $5.
