My first NGC submission

A good experience For my first 14 months on the NGC Collectors Society webpage I had only the free membership. After those first few months, I decided that having a paid membership was worth the information available in the census reports. When it came time to renew that basic membership, I went one step further and decided I would get the premium membership so that I could submit my first 5 coins for grading to NGC. That certificate was set to expire on 1/13/2013, so I had to get my act to

This Coin Is Just To Cool Too Go Without A Picture

I just had to take a picture Every once in a while a coin comes your why that you find incredibly fascinating for its design or perhaps in this case for its history. I have been trying to move a bunch of foreign coins for a friend but this coin so deserves a picture. I will most likely never collect Mexican Spanish Colonial Coins but that in no way deminishes my awe for this coin, 1780 2 Reales. (Sorry folks, I already have an offer pending on this one.)

Eyewear and Coin Collecting

A little less strain, and alot more detail. Having grown up in the optical world and taken it on as my profession I have learned alot of things. Being a coin collector, I have also learned how to make it easier. Looking for small details for extended periods of time and be brutual on the eyes. Having a really good pair of properly fit eyeglasses will make huge differences in your experience. If you have a strong prescription or no prescription at all, you have alot to gain by investing i

Completed my 21 Century Proof Type Set After several years I have finally completed my 21 Century Proof Type Set. It is now tied for first place with about 15 others sets, but I am very pleased with this set. I was hoping to have it completed for the 2012 awards, but did not quite make it in time. I was able to complete a first place Union Shield Lincoln Cent Proof Set and it was in time for the 2012 awards. Thanks to everyone for all of your support and help with completing this set. To

Patience is a good thing ...

Day 72 and counting... I'm not complaining or wish any ill will on anyone on the NCS and NGC staff... On November 8, 2012 NCS received 4 medals on invoice 5413920. Medals were conserved and shipped to NGC. On December 5, 2012, NGC declared the medals as ineligible type. An email was sent to NGC asking for the reason why the ineligible status was assigned. December 10, 2012, NGC replied indicated it was an error for declaring the items as ineligible. I was told that the medals were s

Ebay Alternative

A new site for numismatic buyers and sellers. Hey guys... For a long time now, I have been fed up with eBay, and for that matter, all the other auction sites... and if I'm not mistaken, so have you. There are just too many problems with these sites; unethical sellers, shilling, doctoring, and fakes, not to mention listing fees and the ever rising seller's premium. When we try to alert them to these issues, our pleas fall on deaf ears. This entire system works against good, honest buyers, se

Sorry

for loss of Ike points. Not sure if it was because of me, but I made a request to check some point values. The 1977 & 1978 MS66 were way out of line compared to the value and points for MS67 coins. Sorry to put a damper on everyone's point gains. Have a great day! MAILMAN To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The 1903 -- 1906 Peso

Today's Journal entry is the seventeenth installment in my weekly series on United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The sixteenth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the large silver Peso of 1903 -- 1906. Without a doubt the 1903 - 1906 Peso is the "King" of the USA/Philippines Type Set. This large (38 mm) crown size coin (the same diameter as a U.S. Morgan Silver Dollar) is the largest coin struck by the United States for use in the Philippines while

The World At Your Finger Tips -- Part 2: The Saga Continues

Just when I thought things couldn't get more insane! Quick revisit: Cosmetic case full of old foreign coins and bills, owner doesn't have a clue as to what he has, I lend a helping hand to ID and value the coins. I believe that is where I left you in my last entry. So here we go again... I guess I graded and valued about 85% of the coins and bills this guy gave me to evaluate. Fortunately, most of the grades were in the G to XF range on the coins which my grading skills can handle fairly w

1941-S JEFFERSON - LARGE S - VARIETY IN MS-67

This Jefferson Variety Nickel is the only Large S at this grade level in the NGC Jeff-Registry. Here is a Jefferson Variety that is becoming very popular due to its limited supply in higher grades.   A Well known Author Bernard Nagengast mentioned in the Jeff-Nickel Analyst that 10 dies were made to create the 1941-S Jefferson nickel. From all those dies only 1 was a mistakenly struck mintmark that brought about this incredible variety. When in search for these, always remember to loupe-i

Just a quick question

2012 Graded coins Hello to all my fellow collectors, I have what I think is a very simply question. Does anyone know when the 2012 coins will be priced? I have about 50 coins dated 2012 that say No Price, and since I'm new to collecting I was just wondering. Any polite responces would be of great help. Happy collecting and please remember any day you wake up and see the green side of the grass is a great day.....Mike To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments

Colorful 1935 Connecticut Tercentenary Half Dollar

Crisp Fall Colors on the Leaves and Edge This is a nice example of a NGC MS 67 * l935 Connecticut Tercentenary Half Dollar with nice Fall Colors on the Leaves and Edge. Dirty Hawaiian Beauty is Really Dirty in More Ways Than One

Packed up my next 5 item submittal. Bumps up my total to 16 items in the queue at NCS/NGC. I was filling out my NCS submittal form and reviewing both the Medcalf & Russell and Hibler & Kappen reference books to correctly describe/identify each coin entered on the form. Upon reading the HK-723 description I became curious. The words "...except obvious die variety." was an invitation to compare my HK-722 against my HK-723. I looked at each medal individually with my loupe. I then d

The World At Your Finger Tips When You Least Expect It!

Sometimes, it's just plain better to be lucky rather than good. As luck would have it, I found myself at the right place at the right time over the holidays. My wife and I were browsing our usual antique furniture haunt and I started talking to the owner. We know the owner fairly well as his store is one of our favorites for antique furniture and we have done a good bit of business there over the years. Anyway, the guy asks me if I know anything about old coins. I figure he might have found a

What have I done?

Went to a coin show, yikes! L@@k --> 1866 S $20 I went to the F.U.N. Show in Orlando as a dealer, and sold off a bunch of my coins, and added a few. One of the coins I am looking at is an 1866 S $20 Gold No Motto Type 1 Liberty 20 D. It's in AU 58 NGC population 7 and only two better. The last one went thru an auction as AU55 Jan/2007 at quite a high price. I would love to have the coin. Does anyone have any input as to its value? American Silver Eagles SOLD OUT!

Treasury Announcement The Treasury has sent a memo to all of the primary distributers that they are sold out of silver eagles. The memo says that they will reassess the situation on January 28th and may ration the eagles for a while. This will probably put the early release grades in all forms at a premium. The Treasury is reporting that over six million silver eagles have been distributed in the first two weeks. tig To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New commen

Private Issue California Small Denomination Gold

Finally finished uploading the higher resolution images... Howdy: Well, it took some time but I finally uploaded the last high resolution image for this set of "private issue" California (small denomination) gold coins. It's more fun when you can actually see these tiny coins. Of course, with my scanner, the images lack the "pop" (brillance and/or color) that folks get with their cameras, but the scanner makes up for that by picking up each and every minor scratch, blotch, rub, etc.
