Childhood-like anticipation

It's Funny how we can retain our childhood-like emoitions at time O.K. here we are, into another year. No, I didn't win any special plaques for writing, or any coveted special collection awards. BUT, I knew that I would win some awards. Every year as the Janurary date nears, I wait like a child, to see if I still retain the set awards, which I have been getting for years. I have them all saved, and keep saying to myself, that I am going to frame them some day. Still havn't though. This year, M

Last Straw

!!! First I'd like to say gratz to those who got awards... But none of those sets which got 'Best Presented' was presented anywhere near the quality, or had the effort that I put into my Presidents set. It shows me that NGC doesn't really give a damn, nor makes decisions based on the parameters they set forth. Tell me this set is better than mine? http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/awards/WinningSetDetail.aspx?AwardSetID=29979 Or that any of the awarded sets beats

Dirty Hawaiian Beauty Bounced into My Grasp

NGC census reflects a total population of 2 for the entire coin series... I've been looking hard and long to acquire this coin... I purchased a raw Undated Hawaii HK-722A so called dollar. She looks a bit scruffy, but hopefully NCS can work their eye appeal miracle for me. Hibler & Kappenan assigned a R-6 Fuld rarity scale to this coin. Between 21 - 75 specimens are possibly known to be extant. My Undated Hawaii So Called Dollar Type set is now complete. I'm planning to ship this c

Fourth Custom Set (Vintage California Gold Tokens) Re-Imaged

There are lots of California gold tokens (vintage) available to collect - all are small in size... I really like California gold tokens and have collected them for a number of years. It wasn't until I got a scanner that I was really able to see these tiny pieces of history clearly. This is the forth set of gold tokens which I have re-imaged in higher resolution. It's fun to see the wide variety of these vintage tokens. Enjoy. CGTG To see old comments for this Journal entry, click her

California Hard Rock Miner Tokens - Images Improved

1883 and 1884 California "Hard Rock Miner" gold tokens are great to collect but are fairly small. So, as with the "Arms of California" gold tokens noted in an earlier journal entry, I have added higher resolution scans to make them easier to see (and appreciate). Check them out; search under "cal gold." Thanks. CGTG To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

There's nothing as lovely as a beautiful woman in a little black dress.

Her name is Elsie Stevens, and she looks pretty good considering her age! A picture is at the end of this post. I'll get to Elsie shortly, but first, some personal history. It was 1995 and I had nine years of Silver Eagles in my collection. We had 2 children under the age of 10 and money was tight, but I always managed to budget for the acquisition of one mint state and one proof Silver Eagle every year. 1995 was no different. I got my mint state coin and my 1995P proof, but the mint had

French Cochin China not listed in NGC Competitive Sets

NGC list French Indo China in their competitive sets but not French Cochin China? French Cochin China only has eleven (11) circulation coins that was issued from 1875 to 1885, a vital part of the later French Indo China and yet currently NGC doesn't list it in their competitive sets. May I suggest that NGC do so. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Getting Closer

Almost there My 1934 - 1958 Lincoln Wheat set is getting closer. I just received and added the 1935 S and have the 1949 D en route. The 1935 S is in an old holder. This is my first old NGC holdered coin. The case is smaller and thicker than the rest of my coins and the serial number is one shorter as well. In this 25th year of NGC, it's a pretty cool piece. So, minus the 1955 DDO, which will stay enpty for some time, I am down to 7 coins needed to complete this set. I've been working o

Numismatic Detective -- My Dual Identity Coin

Two NGC designations (medal and coin)! As I was putting away my recent arrivals from NGC, I re-examined my "UNDATED 2M-329 HAWAII ALOHA CARNIVAL HAWAII ISLAND SEAL" in VF 25 (pictured below). Then it occurred to me to check the NGC census.... Then a new issue presented itself. The UNDATED 2M-329 HAWAII ALOHA CARNIVAL HAWAII ISLAND SEAL and UNDATED HI HK-721 HONOLULU CARNIVAL DOLLAR SC$1 (as listed in the NGC Census) are the exact same coin from different collector perspectives. Don't drink and bid!

just saw a 1880 S MS65 go for over $900 It was on an online auction. I found this auction site when I started collecting and now frequently watch, bid, and win some coins offered during various auctions. Today, this auction had several higher graded Morgans so I tossed out some bids on some NGC-graded MSDs (1880 S and 1881 S). Then, as I watched, the 1880S MS65 with a green CAC sticker went for over nine bills. I was thinking...wtf? I guess the beer and excitement of the auction took ove

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The Reduced Size and Weight Fifty Centavos of 1907 - 1921

Today's Journal entry is the fifteenth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The fourteenth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Reduced Size and Weight Fifty Centavos of 1907 - 1921. When the U.S. Congress established the Standards for U.S. Philippine coins in March 1903 the price of silver was at an all time low. By 1905 rising silver prices brought the bullion value of Philippine silver coins to the level

I'm back - sort of anyway

2012 was a very bad year in so many ways. It all started last January. While parked at the supermarket, my car was hit and totaled. Just the first of many problems both medical and financial (the two are not mutually exclusive as I found out). Anyhow, I'm feeling better and even beginning to look at my coins again. Now comes the task of regaining both a handle on what I was trying to build for a collection and rebuilding my skills at grading raw coins. Both of these tasks will take some

HELP, ADVISE, DIRECTIONS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERTISE.

MINTAGES, MINTAGES, ARE DIFFERENT.. Hi, and a New Year to you all. I am in need of some assistance everyone. I was looking up the mintage total for a certain coin the other day in the 2013 U.S. Coin Digest. The by chance saw a web page called Moderncommemoratives.com. The mintages in both sources are different for this coin, unc and proof. Looked at more from both, and the same thing. They both have different totals for mintages. So who do I go by? Is there a more authorative source?

California Gold Tokens - Time For Larger Images

California Gold Tokens are small, really small, tough to see in detail....or am I just getting older? Howdy Once Again: In my desire to actually see my California Gold Tokens in some kind of detail, I have started re-imaging them in higher resolution. I have completed the two sets of "Arms of California" aka "Eureka" tokens shown in the Custom Sets listing. Enter "cal gold" in the CUSTOM SETS search box to find these two sets. The scans, of course, lack the luster and color o

My 1st Numismatiic Purchase of the New Year

My 1st Numismatic Purchase of the New Year My 1st Numismatic puchase of the new year is not a coin, rather Al Blythe's Collector's Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dimes, Published 1992 by DLRC Press, softcover. This complements my purchase last year of Logan & McCloskeys classic work on Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837. Price was $95 from Amazon in near mint condition, a mint book will cost much more. I have really gotten into Half Dimes in the last year, along with the even smaller 3 cent silver

Back in the saddle again:

Finally, got some new coins after a long time away from market. I just added three new 1992 MS70 GAE $5's and a 1994 GAE $10 MS70...I will offer these at the F.U.N. Show in Orlando this coming week. I see the weakness in the price of gold and silver and believe fully in the resurgence of the physical prices. As our economy gets on it's merry way, I am hoping that gold prices don't go up too much as I am on the hunt for others to enhance my collection. The ones listed here are from a sale re
