Coin World Problems

Food for thought..... Since boxes for slabbed coins hold 20 coins, wouldn't it be nice if coin sets were in multiples of 20's?   Are there any other "deep" thoughts out there?   Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

A 1940 Nickel with rays?

Only my coin dealer knows for sure. I get the magazine Reminisce. In an old issue from 2004, (August/September) page 46, there is a querry and picture of a 1940 Nickel which has rays emenating from the Montecello dome. three of them, one straight up, and two more, one either side of center emenating in about a 45 degree angle away from center. I am including the best picture I can generate from this old magazine and unfortunately, the color is sepia which does not help much. Can anyone iden

2011 W Silver Eagles - Proof

It doesn't register. I recently purchased a 2011 W Proof 70 Ultra Cameo. I was able to place the coin in my competitive Silver Eagles Proof Category, however, even though the labeling shows it as a 25th anniversary coin, I can't get it to go into the competitive coin slot for the 25th Anniversary catergory. I have but of collectin for a while. Is there something I am missing. The coin does validate for NGC Authenticity. HELP! and thanks. To see old comments for this Journal entry, clic

My Camera Stand Is Cleaned Off

...by moving all the stuff somewhere else. Yes, I just moved the stuff I had on the camera stand somewhere else for now. I really have been wanting to take some pictures, so I guess I took the easy way out. Guess it doesn't really matter, until I get my basement fixed, there's going to be a mess up no matter what. Anyway, I've taken a few pictures today, had a day off because Tuesday was my holiday to work. It was a nice sunny day here in SE Iowa, at first I thought I'd get out and about, bu

Numismatic Detective -- Re-discovered Hawaii SC50C Error

Thick vs Thin => re-discovered error I received 11 encapsulated medals/coins back from NGC. Of particular interest is the 1959 Hawaii Statehood SC50C Thick (aka Heraldic Art Medal). This so called 50 cent Thick variety has a mintage of 1,200 (while the Thin variety has a mintage of 4,600). The Thin was illegally made the same thickness as a standard silver half dollar. I examined my newly arrived MS 68 Thick with my MS 68 Thin. I found that my Thick variety had a 180 degree rotated revers

Top Pop 1920 (M) USA-Philippines Fifty Centavos

One of the challenges in collecting USA-Philippine coins is that Gem Quality examples are rare to nonexistent for many dates. The 1920 (M) Fifty Centavos is a good example of this phenomenon. Although the 1920 (M) Fifty Centavos had a mintage of 420,000 there are no known certified examples in true Gem quality. The highest certified grade is MS64 and the entire NGC/PCGS Population in this grade is only thirteen coins. The newest addition to my "USA-Philippines Top Pops" collection http://co

Happy New Year and Great News to all at NGC

I called NGC about the Obscured Sets in our Registry I called NGC early this morning on something thats been frustrating me for quite sometime. I have always felt Ngc would like to see all their members share and view each others coins, wherein return everyone being equal an getting all the benefits this great company has to offer. NGC,just emailed me back a few minutes ago mentioning that they couldnt promise a obscured set would never be selected, but did says starting this year (2013

The consolidation will continue in 2013

The consolidation will continue in 2013 Hi Friends, One of the great things about coins is that there are infinite ways to put together a collection and no right or wrong way. Getting your collection the way you want it is like chasing the holy grail and can never really be achieved as there is always another coin or upgrade to be had. Over my almost 50 yrs of collecting, I note that I have continually tried to upgrade and consolidate my holdings. In 2008 I began a significant period of sel

Oh What A Year

My first year collecting coins First please let me wish each and every one of you a Happy and Healthy New Year. 2012 was my first year collecting and having my coins graded, And for a true beginner I think Ive done quite well. I sent in over 785 coins to be graded and was pleased with most of my submissions. yes I had a number of them come back in the dreaded purple slab But most of them came back as expected. As you can see by looking at my sets I collect modern coins as my wallet and kno

Getting Caught Up With Photos

A little free time. I found myself with some free time last night, so I pulled out the coins I had recently purchased, along with my camera, light box and lights and set about taking photos of them to add to this site. Not too far into it, I bumped one of the lights off my coffee table, onto the floor. When I picked it up, nothing was broken, but the light wouldn't come back on. I'll start my search for a new bulb after work today to see if I can finish up. Such is life, though. I h

The PURGE!!

I survived The great PCGS purge, by NGC, of 2012 It's been awhile since I have written. BUT, "I"M BACK"! I was very sad last year when NGC decided to remove all my pcgs coins from my sets. In some ways, insulting. I know it's their right, but I had worked so hard on my sets, especially my number 1 sets. Some coins, PCGS graded, cost me thousands of dollars. I had always looked at the NGC registry as the one proper registry, because a true number 1 set could be created using both top rat

Last "Upgrade" of 2012

...or is it? I entered my last upgrade for 2012 in my Walking liberty sets, replacing a NGC VF-20 1921-S with a VF-25. The Registry points are the same, so it didn't change the set score. This VF-20 was the lowest grade I had in the set so it improves the set enough to be worth it to me. I don't expect to do much with that set in 2013. There aren't many (if any) affordable upgrade opportunities left. The "+" grades may be a possibility, along with a high-end AU or low-end MS in some of t

Happy New Year -- It Has Been Far Too Long!

Alas 2013! You are a welcome sight for my weary eyes. My last Journal entry was in July when I finally completed my Eisenhower Dollar Proof set. For the year, I'd have to say that was the high point of my collecting. I continue to scour the auction sights, bottom fishing as always for those really exceptional deals for my collection. In doing so, I've managed to add a number of PF70UC Lincoln Memorial Cents to my set. My graded sets are still primarily modern coins but they have expanded somew

End of 2012, Quite A Year

Getting one last journal entry in 2012!! Well, it has been a hectic 2 and a half months since my last journal entry. I'm still waiting for my basement to be fixed, I talked to the guy last week and he said he would be over to give me an estimate in mid January, he's been so busy!!! So, since September 18, the date of my last journal, here is what has happened. I've had nose surgery, have caught 2 viruses that made me miss 8 days of work (plus 3 for the surgery). I've been getting stuff out of

Catching Up

It's hard to catch up when a set is allowed to slip. Hello - I am catching up my Silver Eagle collection. It was really just in its infancy stage when I had to move away for over a year and allow the small collection to slip. I am sure it is self evident to not allow this to happen. However, life sometimes takes you into new directions. I am home now and I have purchased 3 new 2011 coins. I'm back into my favorite past time. That is collecting. I hope everyone has a fruitful new year an

Garys Coin of the Month (Volume 2 Number 5) for January 2013 features an NGC PFUC-68 French 100 franc coin (KM#1096) commemorating the 100th anniversary of cinema and the actress, Audrey Hepburn. Knowing that my daughter is a fan of Audrey Hepburn, I gave her a boxed set of three Audrey Hepburn movies in 2005 for Christmas. The titles of those movies were Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffanys, and Sabrina. Of those three movies, Audrey Hepburn went on to win an Academy Award for best actress fo

DIPPING A TOE INTO NEW WATERS...

Can Be Intimidating! Every collector begins collecting a new series, at least once. As I approach uncharted waters, I feel the concern of making mistakes due to unfamiliarity, as well as the usual cautions related to adding new coins to my collection. These questions race through my head: -Is this a series for me? -Do I really like these coins? -Does their history/ reason for minting excite me? -Are the coins readily available, and affordable to me? -And on and on. I am now exper

Goodbye 2012!

I accomplished my goal! Have fun with this hobby and find new and interesting pursuits to keep me immersed and still finding pleasure and relaxtion with coin collecting. Mission accomplished. Overall I count 2012 to be a very successful one for my collection. * Started a Bust half dime collection - love them but have a hard time affording them in the grades I want... * Graded 89 coins in 2012 with some decent results - 1 - 69, 12 - 68's, 36 - 67's, 28 66's, 8 - 65's and few unc details.

None Finer!

At least for now... My primary collecting interest is the US-Philippine series, but I also actively collect any coin minted by the US Mint (or by private mints in the USA) for circulation in other counties. I created a custom set for these coins several years ago. (http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=433) While reviewing population reports, I was surprised to find that quite a few are at the top of the chart, and in some cases are THE finest known, so I cre
