I was snared by my own desire to populate a registry set by buying the plastic rather than the coin.
I work in an industry where companies compete for what is called market share and since I work in the cell phone industry, the pool of potential new customers without cell phones is small and dwindling. Therefore, if you look at the cell phone market as a pie, the only way for my company to grow is if it can take a bite out of another's piece of the pie. For the most part, AT&T and Verizon
Completed My Nickle Type Set
I completed a Nickle type set that I started September 2011. I found myself impatient at times and very patient at others. It likely shows in the collection. I didn't set a budget and purchased based on money available at the time of purchase.
I enjoyed the hunt anyway and will enjoy replacing some of the coins with better coin and maybe higher grades. My advice to those who want to start there first type set collection would be to take your time no matter what
Fun with my smartphone ... Even scans a barcode image on a laptop screen
The "NGC Coin Details" smartphone app is a wonderful certification verification tool (used on my Samsung GALAXY S III). The barcode scanner is terrific (saves time from manually typing in the lengthy NGC certification number).
I checked out many of my NGC encapsulated coins within my collection today and was very impressed. Most did not display an image of the actual coin, but did verify its certification.

Today's Journal entry is an index to the first twelve installments of my weekly series on United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The index includes links to each of my weekly journals in this series. The topics covered to date include an introduction to the series and the first eleven slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set. If you missed one of the journals in this series just click on the appropriate link in this index. I hope that you have enjoyed the journals in this
...or how my coin went from "body bag" to MS65RD.
I haven't submitted a huge number of coins for grading, but I've submitted enough to have suffered a variety of disappointments. I've had them returned with a details grade because of "excessive hairlines," "improper cleaning," and "altered color." One even came back in a body bag as having been "plated," but "lacquered" was a new one to me.

Planning purchases and possible visit to first day release ceremonies...
I visited the US Mint website a few days ago and reviewed their 2013 product release schedule.
I am speculating that there is a high probability that I will be attending the release ceremony at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historical Shrine in August/September 2013 (as I did for the 2012 Star Spangled Banner commemorative coins).
I find coin release ceremonies interesting ... I found a website for the Hawai'i Vo

Today's Journal entry is the twelfth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The eleventh of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Reduced Size and Weight Twenty Centavos of 1907 - 1929.
When the U.S. Congress established the Standards for U.S. Philippine coins in March 1903 the price of silver was at an all time low. By 1905 rising silver prices brought the bullion value of Philippine silver coins to the level wh

Getting Closer
On Thursday I purchased three more coins for my 1934 - 1958 Lincoln Wheat set. I think that will put me around 86% complete.
Other that the 1955 DDO which is out of my current price range, some of these coins are getting hard to find in MS65. That may pose a dilema. Although MS65 isn't the highest grade I can afford, it is the highest grade I could afford while keeping the set all one grade. I may have to look into MS66 for the last few coins that I just can't find. We'
Quarter Submission was TOUGH!!
Friends, I sent in a submission that was accepted on Monday and is already shipped and on it's way home. That sure was a fast turn around on NGC's part. My grades were O-K but really a grade shorter than I was hoping for. I did get 1 MS68PL and a group of 15 MS67s and 30 66s to start the new State Quarter set. I think there were around 5 PL coins and yes I will study them hard to see where the barrier is in the grade differences. I expect to do another submission
Fastest submission
Agree with what Rick stated. I sent in the Eagles I wrote about last week for retro holders on Dec. 5th and today they are coming back. Maybe Barry Allen is working at NGC for the holidays!!!
Received (3) 69's and (2) 70's could have been better but could have been worse. Am very satisfied with what it is. As soon as I get them in hand will post photo's as requested.

Today's Journal entry is the eleventh installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The tenth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Twenty Centavos of 1903 - 1906.
The Twenty Centavos was designed by Filipino artist Melicio Figueroa and engraved by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber. The obverse design features a young Filipino woman standing to the right in a flowing dress while striking an anvil with a hammer he
Roosevelt sets loose 1000s of points
Friends, I noticed a large chunk of points missing this morning. I am not aware if the other SMS coins were adjusted but saw the dimes are where they look to belong now. The points for the SMS Roosevelts were a bit on the high end for such a large populated coin. My set went up to rank #3 for a little while while others plunged below mine.
HAPPY COIN COLLECTING

Delineating Hawaiian numismatics between World and US listings
NGC classifies coins, tokens and medals in the Medcalf & Russell reference (Hawaiian Money Standard Catalog) as "World Coins".
However, in checking the online NGC World Coin Census there are no United States selection or Hawaii selection. I would have expected the Hawaii coins, tokens and medals to be listed here as they are classified as "World Coins"
In addition, if you check the online NGC US Coin Census, NGC only lists
My Pearl Harbor Casualties circa 12/12/12
While on my Hawaiian vacation, I was dismayed in learning that three of my 1941 Remember Pearl Harbor medals from my NCS/NGC submittal were flagged as "Ineligible Type" (class of coin, medal or token that NGC does not certify).
Wait ... what do you mean they are "Ineligible Type"?
After I arrived back to the east coast, I sent an email to NGC to explain to me which specific items in the Medcalf & Russell reference book (Hawaiian Money Standard
THE DUMMY HAS LEARNED
Just got back from the bank to check my stuff. Shock is an understatement. I had used rubberbands to hold my stuff and lo an behold, I have to report horrible news. My silver ingots, some of which I had put in there less than a few months ago, TARNISHED!!! This is even tho they are "sealed" in the whatever they are sealed in when you get them from the BIG DEALERS. Some slabs, both gold and silver, also. I am sick.
Guess you live and learn. I have collected off a
WHAT KIND IS BEST?
Thanks to everyone that responded on my question involving slabs. Now I don't know which way to go. I did have them all at the house but feared summertime storms, I.E. tornadoes, floods, which both are very common where I live. Also we have had an increasing amount of home invasions, so theft is a concern, and there really is no place in my home for real safe storage. I still have more to move. I have a small safe, and put some important documents in there with silica p

well I made a small milestone in my collecting today.....
I had sent in my 2010 & 2011 MS presidental dollar coins a week or so back and they were finished and shipped today. I inputted the 20 coins into my registry then into the different sets they fit into and was happy to see that I jumped from number 927 to 867. not a hugh event but one I thought would take until next year. I have 18 40s roosevelts awaiting there turn to be graded it sure would be nice to g
Even though I have been collecting coins for well over half a century I did not own my first certified coin until 2007. That was the year that I joined the Collector's Society, created my first signature set, and started competing in the Registry. If someone told me back then that my "Total Coin Registry Points" would someday reach 100,000 Points I would have told them that they were out of their mind.
Until recently I never paid much attention to the "Total Coin Registry Points" on my Collec
for any graded coin
Greetings once more everyone;
Yes, it has been quite a while since I last added an already graded coin to any of my collections and today I finally got to do just that. A fellow store owner on E-Bay and I did a trade from our stores and I added the 1891 Morgan to my collection in exchange for (2) 25th Anniversary American Silver Eagles. Everything was within a few dollars of the other in FMV so was very happy with the deal.
I also have a number of coins I need to subm
CONTAMINATION?
Question to all the long time members about storing slabs. I have many slabs in safe deposit boxes, and this particular place does not climate control there safe deposit area. None of the others in town do either. This is the question, I usually have 4 to 5 slabs held together with a rubberband. Will the rubberband damage the slab or the coin through disinegration or release of gases either on the coin or the holder?
I look forward to feedback, oh! almost forgot, this is o
Kind of sounds like a baby announcement and I guess in a way it is...
Cracked the MS 69 plateau for the first time. I go through lots of OBW rolls and mint sets looking for modern rarities to send in to NGC. A semi-cheap way to stay engaged with the hobby on a daily basis and have lots of fun grading coins, as I really enjoy the challenge of finding, self grading and then submitting coins for verification of my grading skills or lack thereof...
I generally don't buy the SMS sets, but recentl
