Live Long and Prosper...

Resistance is futile. Captains' Log, Star-date -- 11.10.12: I have once again assumed command of the Coin Dealership, DR. Hair. Mothballed after the graduation of my first daughter from college, I put my numismatic dealings on hiatus for the past 10 years and devoted my duties to my chosen field of practice. With my second daughter just months away from her collegiate commission and the Ferengi, now firmly in control of this sector under the leadership of the socialist, General Barack, I

USA-Philippines 1936 Commemorative Issues

Thank you NGC for creating a competitive registry set category for the "USA-Philippines 1936 Commemorative Issues". When the United States defeated Spain in the Spanish-American war of 1898, the Philippines became a United States possession. Unlike other colonial powers the U.S. always had intentions of giving the Philippine Islands full independence once the inhabitants were given educational opportunities and the basis for good government was established. By 1935 "Nation Building" had p

State Quarters Are actually cool coins

At the gem level these area really some cool coins with a lot of thought. After wading through over 10k coins though it makes me want to throw someone. This is my first round of grading of Gem state quarters that Rich and I have been working on. Part of my business is providing market appraisals and liquidation for estates and this guy had bought over 4 monster boxes of state quarters ('99-03). I've narrowed the field to what I think are my best 15 coins of of 6 rolls and I'm a little nervous

Presidential Elections as Collecting Mile Markers

The more things stay the same, the more things change. Presidential elections always felt huge to me. Four years. That's a long time. A lot can happen in four years. This last election felt like 2008 was yesterday. So this journal is as much about pinching myself as about collecting. INTERNATIONAL: Mubarak and Qadaffi fell. Bin Laben's dead. Japan, for a year or so, got 0% of its energy from nuclear. The Euro is dead, the players are just buying time on how to kill it. 25% unemploy

Chinese Panda Coin Collector

http://www.facebook.com/ChinesePandaCoinCollectors I have always had moderate interest in paper, but never could really get started with coins. I've found a real fondness toward Panda's. Started at about 3 years ago and with crazy passion and interesting panda's each year. Seems to be a fun and interesting way to keep the hobby fresh, take my interest away from paper for now and again, so that nothing every gets stale.i made a page where all collectors can meet , share , sell or trade coins

Culion Island Leper Colony Coinage

Thank you NGC for creating a competitive registry set category for the Culion Island Leper Colony Coinage. The Culion Island Leper Colony Coinage is a fascinating but often overlooked aspect of USA-Philippine numismatics. In 1906 the Bureau of Health for the U.S. Territory of the Philippines established a colony for leper patients on the small island of Culion in the China Sea. For health reasons, the decision was made that the leper colony should have a separate coinage of its own which wo

Election 2012

A very long day.... What a long day it was yesterday. Im an election worker here in wayne co. WV. Our day started about 0525 setting everything up and trying to make our cramped room as comforble as possible. The polls opened at 0630 sharp as thats the time our computer based polling machines started working. At 0610 I went outside for what might have been my last smoke for hours and there were over 20 people waiting in line calmly for there turn to vote. As I said I work a small precenct of a

Big Week Coming Up

And big weeks gone by... First up: The Giants gave me the five wins I wanted - without any more losses. I've been a Giants fan for as long as I can remember, basically copying my older brother as I did with other things. I had to wait until 2010 for their first World Series championship in my lifetime. I'm glad I didn't have to wait that long again for the second! Coins: Last time I wrote, an offer on a half dime was out to the jury. Heritage informed me that the owner would not accept my o

A New Custom Set

A Custom Set for Garys Coins of the Month Greetings everyone, just a short post this time to announce my new custom set entitled, A Compilation of Garys Coin of the Month Journals. About three weeks ago, JAA/USA Philippines suggested that I compile all my Coin of the Month articles into a Collectors Society custom set. He reasoned how awesome it would be to view each of my Coin of the Month photographs using the Collectors Society slide show feature. Up until that time, I had not considered st

Goodbye Hurricane Sandy - Hello Baltimore in 12 days

Goodbye Hurricane Sandy - Hello Baltimore in 12 days Friends, this storm was the worst by far I can remember for New Jersey. The damage quite amazing up here in Sussex county ( the northern most county ) with power now still only restored to about half the population. Downed trees crashing through houses is a common sight. Thank goodness I had no major damage & a gas fireplace insert that kept the middle portion of my home warm. Next year I will be adding more outage backup, a LP gas stov

FBL or not

A 1950D ms65 Franklin Grade ms65 by pcgs. Looking for your opinion.I purchased this coin thinking I might resubmit to see if it would designate fbls. the bottom bell lines look full to me. The upper set of bell lines are 98% full except for the bottom two lines just to the left of the crack.also the upper lines has a bag markat the right edge of the bell. I would think that this wouldn't matter much as the bottom lines are the main lines for designating FBls(please correct me if I am wrong).A

MEMORABLE COIN SHOW MOMENT

A Walter Breen Encounter I was reading the PCGS coin forum, and ran across a thread entitled, OUTSIDE THE ROPES Coin Show Moment. That started me thinking (always a dangerous thing). I recalled attending a show sometime in the late 1970/ early 1980 time period. And I do not recall the exact location; either Cincinnati, Philadelphia, or New York. My memory is really vague on both time and location. I got in a hotel elevator to go to the show site, and as the door was closing, a very large

Complete Turnaround

How Numismatics became another faded interest. Hi All, Been a while since I posed anything so I thought I would weigh-in with a few thoughts and unburden in the process. I have deleted about half my registry sets because I intend to eventually sell the coins and i didn't want to even slightly tempt myself to change my mind. I put aside 20 very nice coins for my Daughter Hana and I have decided to keep my Mercury Dimes, my Walking Liberty Halves, and My Peace Dollars. Will also be keepi

United States Coinage for the Philippine Islands: The Reduced Size & Weight Five Centavos of 1930 - 1935

Today's Journal entry is the sixth installment in my weekly series on the United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. The fifth of the twenty slots that compose a NGC USA-Philippines Type Set is the Reduced Size & Weight Five Centavos of 1930 - 1935. The coins in this slot include business strikes in five dates, and four recognized die varieties. All of the 1930 - 1935 Five Centavos were struck at the Manila mint and have an "M" Mint Mark on the reverse to the left of the date. In

Faulty PCGS Holder??? #2

Makes you wonder..... About 2 years ago I purchased a lot of PCGS MS64 graded morgan silver dollars. I just put them into the safe and didnt think much about them until recently when I though I would sell some because the price is up. I looked at one and that the PCGS case sqeaked when you twisted it from side to side. As I twisted it the back poped off and exposed the coin inside. I immediately thought it was a fake but the date on the morgan was a 1883-0 and I thought why would someone fake

Frustration of Cruddy Photo Skills

maybe it's time to expand my collecting parameters My coin collecting mostly consists of buying as beautiful and eye-appealing coins as I can. I usually do this in the confines of some over-arching goal like assembling a whole set, short set, year set, thematic set etc. I say usually because some of my coin purchases are not for any set but just because I love the design. Examples of this would be coins like my Dolly Madison commem with her wonderful bust on the obv and the willow tree and gar

COIN PRIORITIES

Mother Nature Has A Way Of Clarifying One's Life Priorities! As Hurricane Sandy approached the Northeast, my focus was on gathering emergency supplies; insuring the safety of my wife and myself; securing our home; and praying a lot! Coins never entered my thoughts. In the aftermath of SANDY, I focused on checking property damage (we were both safe); contacting my insurance agent; and checking on friends; and offering up prayers of thanks for us, and concern for those less fortunate. I had
