Prescott's Picturesque Penny

MS67* RB Normally I wouldn't even consider a RB coin for my Lincoln Memorial set. However, I saw this coin offered by Great Toning out of Massachusetts and had to have it! He let me buy it on terms and I made the final payment today. The coin should be here some time next week. Great Toning () let me use his pictures from the eBay listing to create this montage for viewing. Currently, the coin garners a measly 78 points in the registry but I'll be submitting for points review and hope i

Colorful California Gold Piece

I like toned coins and I like California Gold coins, so... Color in gold coins, especially California gold coinage, is difficult to find (especially on a budget). One way to do so is to seek out "cleaned" California Gold, which sometimes tends to display a very beautiful rainbow patina. Now, I know "cleaned" is a bad word; not a four-letter word, but just as bad. But, every once in a while, you can find a toned coin that makes you forget about the cleaning, and simply enjoy the colors. Of

2011 25th ASE Anniversary vs. 2012 75th San Francisco Anniversary

Which set is more value? Question which one of the two 2011 25th ASE Anniversary Set and 2012 75th San Francisco Anniversary Set was a better buy or value? As I see it the 25th had a low mintage and the reverse proof was only the second one ever minted at Philadelphia the only special coin was the uncalculated coin minted at San Francisco. But I see the 75th a better value because, although it has a high mintage than the 25th, that it has two coins minted at the San Francisco Mint with the

A Tribute to My Father on His 93 Birthday

My father was born ninety-three years ago today on October 1, 1919. The "JAA USA/Philippines Collection" is dedicated to his memory. My father belonged to the "Greatest Generation". During World War ll he served in the U.S. Army in the Southwest Pacific where he participated in the New Guinea, Luzon, and Southern Philippine campaigns. When my father returned from the war he brought back with him examples of coins and notes from Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines as well as some amazi

Coins, "The little bits of metal in my life" Coins.... what do they mean to me? Some might say that they are something that gives one something to do. That they connect you with a particular childhood memory. Maybe they give them somewhere to belong? Maybe they give them a purpose? Maybe... For me however, they are a link to a greater meaning of being a connection with history, a feeling that I am not awash alone in a sea of humanity, that I am linked, however tenuously with my kin from anothe

Numismatic Detective -- 1891 US Patent Centennial Medal

I should incorporate the words "Numismatic Detective" in a parody song in the style of the original song by Elvis Costello "Watching the Detectives" Earlier last week I submitted paperwork to my lawyer for a US Patent filing. Within days, I was contacted with news that a US Provisional Patent application was officially filed under my name with my invention at the US Patent & Trademark Office in Washington DC. This was my second ever US patent filing. Curious in tying my work (I'm an engi

Hard on the nerves Well here I sit and watch my next prize registry coin on the block. 2010-W PF 70 Ultra Cam. In my hast I think,in hindsight, my $100 max bid might have been a little high but for a registry coin, which is now my lastest love in Silver Eagles, is worth every penny. Cool huh. The Rarest of the Rare

All Gem quality USA-Philippine proof coins are rare and PF67 Superb Gems are Ultra Rare treasures. The 1904 One Centavo in PF67RB is one of those very special coins. This Top Pop treasure has a combined NGC/PCGS population of two with no specimens graded higher. USA-Philippine Proof Sets were only manufactured for five years (1903 through 1906 and again in 1908) and all were extremely small mintages compared to today's modern proof sets. The mintages for USA-Philippine Proof Sets by year are;

New member

Hi I'm Steven Newport and am just getting back into it again Not sure where I'm going from here. I sold my last collection when My wife took sick. Now it's time to start over again. I find the pull of coin collecting is very hard to ignore. I don't expect to do this in a hurry. My last collection took many years to gather, not that it was of any huge dollar value. But enough that I was very proud of it. So here I go again. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments

New Finished Set

Westward Journey This wasn't a hard or time consuming set, but these coins came out as I was starting to get interested in collecting and I thought they were a nice set. So, that, combined with the fact that they are inexpensive and a short set, I decided to pick them up. I'm kind of digging these short, easy to complete sets. I may work on the Susan B Anthony set next. Not as easy as this one, but still fairly short. Only 23 days until the start of the ANA National Money Show in Dallas

Rethinking my "USA-Philippines, Complete" Registry Sets

When NGC created its new "NGC Coins" filter I decided to take a fresh look at my "USA-Philippines, Complete" Registry Sets to see if I could reshuffle them to create a number one "NGC Coins" set. When I started out my "JAA USA/Philippines Complete Collection" registry set: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=68602&Ranking=all ranked number 5 when viewed with the "All Coins" filter and number 2 when viewed with the "NGC Coins" filter. My coins were graded

It was not tyo bad, but my lincoln did not come out well. I received notics of my coins that i had sent in for grading, it started off with my 2006 reverse proof, it came in with a PF-70, and my 1909S received a VF-30, this was very disapointing, i was hoping for a XF-45, O-Will. My 2012S reverse proof received a PF-69 and my 2012S came in with a PR-70U, not to bad. The 2012W received a MS-69ER, not bad over all. you all have a great day. This coin is registered to another owner....

with a different twist. Howdy Friends,   Has this happened to you recently? It's been awhile for me at least until today while at work I received an email from NGC that another person had registered a coin I won at auction about 3 weeks ago and that NGC would remove the coin from my registry and transfer it to the new owner and mark it as sold in my collection manager. Then there some links available given a choice to either reject or accept the transfer request. An explanation as to the re

2007-2008 Presidential Dollars

OUCH.... Hey Friends, To upgrade my comp set I just purchased the 2007-2008 (S-mint) presidential dollars. I cannot believe how much of a jump in price from PR69 to PR70. The 07's were $163 and 08's were $96 dollars. I hope I made a wise decision on this one. I get a little nervous when I do not even have the silver content to fall back on. I have the 2012 in PR70 just need 09-2011 to make a perfect set to date. I will have some PR69's for sale soon... Anyway are the presidential dollars g

Added more Kennedy's

4 to be exact Howdy Friends, Added 4 Mint State Kennedy's to my set this weekend and just finished uploading the photos. I received them while celebrating my 23rd wedding anniversary at a lovely river home on the Rogue River here in Southern Oregon. I didn't mention to my wife that I was expecting coins in the mail and I was a little worried about leaving them in the mailbox for three days but my sweetie brought them along for me. I spent some relaxing time and registered them with my smart
