1980 D washington quater MS 67

A very rare coin with Not enough registry points? I recently purchased a 1980 D Washington quarter ngc ms 67 for my registry sets. before I bid on the coin I checked out the census and the price guide . Ngc has only graded 9 in this grade and non higher but there is only a total of 113 graded by ngc(seems very low). I expected there to be a high value on this coin. But there is no price in the price guide. so I checked the other guys price guide and it was $700 and the census is 16 in ms 67.

I Give this Coin a Star

Actually 5 Stars I just ordered the $5 Unc. Gold General Douglas MacArthur Commemorative from the US Mint website. The $5 and $10 gold Unc. commemoratives are the only "modern" coins I collect in my registry set and the only coins I directly order from the mint. I will probably again submit for certification, but I always wonder if I should do this as I very much like the original mint packing. I currently add to the set when the mint issues designs I like or are of historical interest. Thi

One coin, six different mints!

How is that possible? I recently acquired this 1977FM 50 Piso coin on eBay for a very reasonable price. With a mintage of 6,704 pieces, proof specimens are not rare, but with only two certified by NGC this one seemed too good to pass up. I find this commemorative coin particularly interesting in that it is directly or indirectly associated with no less than six different mints. 1. The obverse inscription "INAUGURATION OF THE SECURITY PRINTING PLANT AND MINT COMPLEX" refers to the 1977 ope

. Been a while since I've posted. Just wanted to get some opinions on this coin. I saw it on ebay tonight and fell in love with it. I got the winning bid for $626 shipped. Doesn't seen like a bad deal for what is. But, I know nothing about world coins. These pics do not show off the iridescent colors that the coin showcases. The brown with the heavy cameo is a thing of beauty. Just wondering if I did good or got ripped off. Brian To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. N

A great surprise came in the mail on Tuesday

Boy am I bewildered and Proud.... I went to the Post Office on Tuesday to pick up some coins returning from NGC and to my great surprise I had another large white cardboard package from NGC. Thinking it was just packaging I had requested to be returned to me, I let it set on my desk until last night. But when I opened it, it was an Award for Outstanding Achievement for my 1973 proof set. Now I am very proud to win an unexpected award my first year collecting, And believe me you will not find a

Adding a few pics

Always adding coins keeps the camera guy busy Friends, As I add to my page eventually I need to catch up a little on pics so I don't get too far behind. Last week I added a few and today a 1965 NGC MS67FT. Not the best photography but at least a try. ENJOY---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. My first exposure to the Newcomb book......now I'm hooked!

Great fun. As some of you may know I'm currently a student at North Carolina State University (NCSU), one of the many great benefits of being at student at state is the resources available to me. One of the most useful resources on campus that I have found is the library, surprisingly enough we have a fairly good selection of books relating to numismatics! Despite the good selection of books there are no books relating specifically to large cents, however the university has a program that allo

Steady As She Goes

still searching and bidding- with an occasional buy It's hard to believe that it is mid-March and this is my first coin journal for 2013. I was tempted several times to jump in on trending posts but avoided the temptation in the spirit of true journaling instead of using this service as comment section, opinion area or chat board. Plus, I would have been in the vast minority with some of my opinions. I recall one gentleman-correctly using this area for its intended purpose-- which is to keep

Trying another attempt at a pcgs crossover

I am going to pray for a good crossover O.K. here I am again. I mean what choice do I have. I have so many PCGS coins. No, Im not crossing my PCGS pl-68's. They are too costly and valuable to have them graded down any level. I did get brave enough to go for a couple of pl-67's though. A canada dime, quarter, 50 cents, and a dollar. I didn't place a min. grade this time. IT'S in gods hands now. I did submit some other grades for crossover, but those were the top grades submitted. I will let eve

Who moved my Cheese ( Coin ) ?

Dealer to dealer sales and coin movement can be hard to track but with a little luck... A collector may be able to find a coin on the "rebound". This just happened to me at the Baltimore Show. Right after large shows (in this case Long Beach) , I make it a point to search dealer inventories for new offerings. I have noticed that the dealers can take anywhere from 3- 7 days to post new coins on their respective sites. About a week after Long Beach , before 8 AM on a Saturday I viewed the m

5 New 2012 Registry Awards

Marching through Europe It rained last night and the sun shone on my porch. The mailman left an envelope on my doorstep (glad it was under a big roof). My wife Helen, found it as we were saying goodbye to a guest this morning. In it [from CCG] was five (5) count em, FIVE Registry Awards. It is not good to be prideful, but it is fun to have some lofty goals achieved throughout ones life. I have been collecting coins now for over two decades and last year I got two awards and three new ones

The Siren Call of a #1 Registry Set and the Inevitable Letdown!

I have built a Registry set over a period of nearly 10 years and had a #1 set for three years. Then came the inevitable let down for all who aspire to be #1. Before I moved to Washington State, about (2003), I was buying mostly better date, lower MS and AU gold coins with low pops. This lead me to having three coins dated 1979 (two quarter eagles and an eagle) of which the eagle was later sold. From these two quarter eagles, my 1879 Registry Set began to take shape about 2004. Next submission and a new membership

ANA membership/ summer seminar and late 1930s proof coins. I finally broke down and joined the ANA today, and I hope to attend the summer seminar in Colorado this summer! If all things go well both finically and health wise I should get the opportunity, does anyone have any interesting stories about the seminar or any tidbits of information? I planned to submit the coins below at a much earlier date, however a few issues aroused and I was unable to send them in but since then I have had the ti

Just a little retirement activity

Durn coin shows, usually come home with more than I brought. Yup, durn sellers are hotter than me for sure, came home with a pacel of new coins and added them to my registry. Don't have time to list them, but many duplicates. Take a look if u like modern graded coins. I sold off some WWII trinkets, and came away with some newer things. 14 gold pieces, MS70's and some other things added in. I sold a bunch of ungraded Morgans, I think about 110 of them for a little over silver price, and a f

Pre-Spring Cleaning

Roosevelt dimes on their way out!! Friends, I have made a decision to follow Todd Henson and sell off my dimes. Most of them were picked for their clearness and strike. I just have a different kick on these then I did when I started collecting them 2 years ago. So the dimes have been added to this page with my Mocoms and will be sold to venture into other choices of coin collecting. Work is picking up and the summer should prove to be another adventurous one in my numis additions. Rick

I Have the Most Expensive Sunday Morning Phone Calls

.... but it was great speaking with you Glenn! Ok, so I just penned (does anybody actually "Pen" anything anymore?) a journal letting everybody know my journey was finally over on my quest to complete my Morgan GSA Holder set. I elaborated on how I finished the set quite by chance and had no real intentions of adding the final three coins I needed in one year (five years would have been a stretch) but opportunity called in the person of fellow collector Glenn Smick who was parting with his s

This Journal entry serves as my one year update

It's been roughly a year since I started collecting and the tally is 114 graded/slabbed coins worth 35,097 points. I am most pleased with the progress I've made on my 1971 Mint Set -- lacking 2 coins for 100% and needing to upgrade the 1971D Lincoln Cent from 66RD to 67RD. My 1971D MS67FT Roosevelt Dime came to me through a purchase from our very own TD Henson. It was this coin and Todd's encouragement for that I joined the Collector's Society. The Hawaiiana Numismatist

Book writing is fun... I've been busy (up coming engineering presentations and numismatic book writing project) to write any journal entries at this website. I took on a side project to write a book called The Hawaiiana Numismatist. For those who don't know, the current Hawaiian numismatic reference book (I don't want to mention the name), have been perpetuating a string of errors and inaccuracies. What motivated me in this action is that NGC replied to an inquiry I made about a medal str

1947-S JEFFERSON MS-GEM FULLSTEPS

B. Nagengast: True Gem full-strikes in this year are getting more difficult to find than the 1946-S-1948-S and 1949-S. The San Francisco Mint in 1947 produced almost 25 million nickels where the appearance of most coins showed a dull greyish look to them. Sifting thru nickel-rolls can become frustrating at times, however with determined effort your excitement intensifies having finally found one for your collection. This Jefferson nickel came from my raw-nickel collection, and decided to

Another Classic Commemorative

The Story of an Oregon Pioneer Hello Friends, The 1926 Oregon Commemorative is another of the classic silver commemorative half dollars that I have coveted for inclusion in 'My Heritage Set". I was excited to discover an Oregon Pioneer in our family tree who traveled the Oregon California Trail between 1862 and 1864. The Oregon Trail Memorial Association, Inc. of New York petitioned Congress to authorize the minting of the Oregon Commemorative to help fund the placement of monuments at lo

Question about a slab I just bought

A rattler Good morning, everyone. I wanted to see if anyone could help me out with this. I bought a coin a couple of weeks ago. The coin looks great, but it's sitting at a bit of an angle in the holder. I've tried tapping it a bit to see if I could get it reseated, but it hasn't worked. Does anyone know if NGC will reslab it for free, or whether there would be a charge? Thank you for your help. Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be
